Are the classifieds a measure of golf equipment success?!?!

As a regular viewer of the classified section here....I often see trends of certain drivers, irons or golf balls either up for sale or probably more importantly NOT for sale. Does it mean a club is beloved if it doesn't get listed a whole lot??

It seems normal when the new stuff comes out there will be some churn as I like most of us here want to try the newest toy! Here are a few recent observations;

1. Ping G max drivers and G400 and 700 irons rarely come up for sale

2. AP2 irons have been listed a lot...great irons but maybe too ambitious for high handicappers

3. TM drivers are always a hot item

4. Pro V1 and Pro VX will sell in a minute if priced right!

5. Will you split the shaft and head is king for driver sales:)

6. Man guys here play really stiff shafts!

7. Scotty Cameron sure makes a wide selection of putters

8. Do creative titles really create more interest than just listing what you have for sale?

Just some fun dialogue for a Friday!

Maybe,

I definitely think there are trends in the classifieds section but I don't believe this has anything to do with a certain manufacturers "success". Mostly because I feel like this forum is for the X% of obsessed golfers (guilty) and usually selling experiments that didn't work out for them. Not that I'm complaining, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

It's more reflective of trends in online/social-media hype and flash mobs than of the golf-club market as a whole.

There's a few thousand guys spread all over the country who don't get excited by what the better players at their club or the other guys in their Satuday Nassau happen to buy and use. Instead their wish fulfillment life revolves around this an a couple other internet forums which form an influential "peer group". I'm one of those.

So the stuff that shows up or not, sells quickly or not, on a forum Classifieds is a pretty good finger on the pulse of that group's whims and desires. Which is similar to but not the same as the larger market.

Good topic, re AP2... i think that may be because close to 50% of golfers have said, lets give them a go!!

They have had ten years and i think nave changed peoples perception of what is helpful vs say a SuperDuper Wide Sole Ping !!!!

Ps i was an ISI and I3 guy.. neither were G wide!!!

Re Scottys, i did research for 6 months before buying mine in March and bought the right one!!!

If Titleist releases a set of irons, maybe 5,000 people buy them.

No idea what the actual number is, just a guess.

If 5 gets posted on BST, that’s .1% of sets

Just swag numbers here but the percent is probably very low being flipped.

i dunno...if a large volume of a certain club/irons were purchased new, wouldn’t it make sense there would be a higher number of those sold used?

I just think more guys have found the power of direct selling vs trading into a store. Don’t put too much stock into what you see on the classifieds.

1. More likely: people looking for magic bullet for golf game. Doesn’t work, so they sell

2. Still likely: people like trying new stuff. This is me.

3. Advertising fools a lot of people

This is correct. And, in my experience, is also true for enthusiasts of watches, skis, trucks, etc.

There's also a lot of fakes on classifieds.

For example, I would never buy a Scotty on those sites.

If you think there are a lot of fakes on this site, then you really should only buy new, retail and nothing else. There are always going to be bad seeds, but most people here on BST, especially those who have bought and sold alot and are in the forums alot, are pretty honest. As someone else said, usually fakes are sniffed out pretty quickly here.

This site and others like it, give people the ability to try the new stuff without the risk of losing a lot of money if it doesn't work out. Buy what's hot, try it out, if it's not for you, flip for a slight (if any) loss. Everybody wins.
