Taylormade P790 Irons

I don’t think the demo clubs have did justice. I won’t be playing until Sunday or hitting anything outside until then but hitting shots into the net the first word that comes to mind based on feel and sound is POWERFUL.

... Looking forward to your opinion after hitting your P790's for several rounds. I did find the PW launched a little higher and spun just a little less than previous Player Irons wedges I have had in my bag and it took a slight adjustment period to get used to the minimal increase in distance. Gapping just took some patience and getting used to before dialing them in and knowing what to expect, so just be aware that it may or may not happen for you. Especially since you have the AW.

Other then the new Bridgestone combo (visually, but if they feel like J15, instant bag worthy)...I don't think there's a better combo set then 790s and 750s (730 MB if you're a good ballstriker).

The jury is still out for my 790 G wedge or keep using my faithful Mizuno JPX900 forged G wedge. Appearance the 900 wins, and haven’t had enough real world chances to direct compare other than the range and there they are comparable.

Going through the PGA tour Superstore, TM is replacing my M2s for the faces caving in. Essentially they’ll give me a new set of M3s to either keep or use for store credit to whatever I want. I haven’t tried the M3s, but I loved the feel of the P790s when I tried them out previously. The reason I didn’t get them previously was because I wasn’t sure I was ready to play them. Now I’m at a roughly 10 handy.

These seem like a good club to bridge the gap between gi and players Irons. Or I could be off on that.

Anyone playing the P790's in graphite? I'm loving my 790's with DG 105 but have been getting sore elbows recently.

I picked up a set of Callaway CF16 with Recoil Prototype 110's from CPO that should be here next week to try out but am already wondering about swapping the Recoils into the 790's if I like them.

Played the 790's again today and shot 36 and missed 2 additional birdie putts. The 790's are as accurate an iron as I have played and the extra distance has been nice.

Have shot 38, 41, 43, 42 and 36 with the 790's since I have had them and those are great rounds for me.

... I played my first set with Recoil 95's and my second set has Recoil 95 Prototypes in them. I absolutely love the combination. On 16 today I had 191 to carry a nasty bunker with very deep grass surrounding it today and the pin in back. Normally I would just play left of the bunker but needing a birdie to break 70, I decided to go right at the pin because I know my P790 4 iron was good to cover that yardage as it is my 195-205 club. Cleared the bunker and stopped 10 feet short of the pin. I honestly would not have tried that shot with any other 4 iron I have played, I would have just played 5-10 yds left of the bunker.

So you are just going to leave us hanging? Did you make the putt? Or is the putter on the BST?

... LOL, long story short I did not make the putt. I had been playing a little too much break all day and had already lipped out 3 birdie putts with 3 more not even touching the hole. I am sure you can guess, but I played less break and it turned left out of the hole the last foot or so. Story of my round.

That's what I want to hear. I did play Cushin inserts in my Ping irons in the past which helped somewhat but thought I would give Recoils a try after reading a lot of positive reviews

As someone that has Recoil 95 Prototypes in my G25 irons and the reason for going there was tennis elbow, I switched to the Prosoft inserts inside my Modus 105 iron on my P790s. I still hit off mats and I still love the feel of iron shaft and it is even softer feel with greatly reduced vibrations. I've used them for 2 seasons now, originally in my Anser irons and now I inserted them inside the P790s when I regripped with the Grip Master perforated leather grips. At 50c each insert, best value around and they do not rust like the True Temper sensicores. They weigh next to nothing and has no/minimal impact to swingweight. Check them out before an expensive reshaft..

... I had a pretty severe case of tennis elbow and none of the inserts worked for me. I tried them all including Prosoft and some home made versions. It wasn't until I switched to NV Tour graphite iron shafts that I got relief. Many others have found inserts didn't work for their elbow problems. I have never gone back to steel. Obviously your milage did vary but I think you might be in the minority.

Sounds like they would be worth a try for me in my 790's. Where is the best place to buy them?

I can just remove the grips and insert them and then reinstall the grips?

I don’t think the demo clubs have did justice. I won’t be playing until Sunday or hitting anything outside until then but hitting shots into the net the first word that comes to mind based on feel and sound is POWERFUL.

... Looking forward to your opinion after hitting our P790's for several rounds. I did find the PW launched a little higher and spun just a little less than previous Players wedges I have had in my bag and it took a slight adjustment period to get used to the minimal increase in distance. Gapping just took some patience and getting used to before dialing them in and knowing what to expect, so just be aware that it may or may not happen for you. Especially since you have the AW.

I’m eager to get them dialed in. Playing Sunday for sure and possibly Monday.

Some of us been waiting all day to hear the results!

Lol. Let me make excuses first. I hadn’t played in 2 weeks. The greens were not that great, slow and bumpy(hate diamond zoysia especially in bad shape). I cruised to an easy 80. Zero birdies. Closest birdie putt was about a 10 footer from a nice flighted AW from 98 yards. Missed it. Had about 7 or 8 other birdie attempts in the 15-20 foot range. Missed them. Only one really bad hole where I dunked one in the water on a par 3. Made double. Short game other than putting was pretty good. Missed a couple shortish putts for par and a couple others from a little deeper. Drove the ball decent with just one really swirly one but saved a bogey. I didn’t play great but as for the irons I really liked them. The solid ones felt great and the not so solid ones was still pretty good. Made a couple really bad swings and got what I deserved. The flight was overall flatter than my forged tecs that had the C-taper lites which I liked. Hoping to get out and play again tomorrow.

I was oh so close to ordering a full set when released, but was just not digging the upcharge for LZ's, so went MP18 combo and could not be happier.

I have however taken a small step to the dark side, just ordered a black 790 3i with black DG105.

I have been hitting the long/mid irons solid lately, but losing the hybrid left, so will give this a go with all the good word on the long irons.

Your going to smash that dark monster with that shaft! My P790 4 iron likes toe center misses a lot more than heel center misses thats for sure for total distance and optimal traj/carry. Good luck and looking forward to hear your feedback

I'm about to do the same thing! I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my MP-18 blade 4-6 iron to match the rest of my set along with a 50° sm7. I was thinking a black p790 3 iron would be a nice touch to the top of the bag? I have a black tour ad di 95x just waiting for a new head!

Some stud on Tour who has won a few majors recently bags 4-P Mizuno, and an off brand blacked out 3i.

It's the cool thing right?

I actually tried a Fli-hi 3i, but just did not get along as well as I do with the 4-5, might have been the 90g graphite shaft. I think this will suit me better, and should have a smaller sole than the fli-hi.

I am stoked to get it, but have NEVER ordered TM through a rep, hope they turn and burn the order.

Its a Nike VFP 3i/2i, and is much better clubhead than the 790.

I just sold a nike VFP 2i head to replace it with the black p790. The nike was a rocket launcher but not forgiving at all and felt like garbage to me. Even on flushed hits, it just didn't feel solid. Time will tell if that was a mistake! Haha!
