Walking vs Riding

Recommended Posts

All of the walkers here, do you use a push cart or carry?

I use a push cart.

Allows for extra water and gear.

I walk when i'm alone, but ride when i'm with friends.

Unfortunately for me, I don't have many friends so I walk 98% of my rounds.

I'll carry my bag for nine holes maybe a handful of times a year, during the cool weather. It's a nice way to breeze around with 10-11 clubs and unencumbered by the trolley and a full-size load of "Stuff" (extra balls, snacks, water, bottle of sand for divots, extra towels, umbrella).

But for the other 130 or so rounds a year it's an electric trolley for me.

A full round with a bag on my shoulders really kills me. I'm not particularly physically fit but I do play 3, sometimes 4 times a week walking at a reasonably brisk pace. My various nagging orthopedic issues are never going to hold up under that amount of golf if I schlep a bag.

In the summers around here it's so hot and humid that I could't deal without having an umbrella mounted on the trolley. I'd have to basically take August off. And the trolley also lets me be a good citizen and keep a couple bottles of sand to fill mine and a few other people's divots as I play. That's just not happening if I'm toting the whole weight on my back!

I always walk with a push cart. When the weather gets cooler I will try to carry a few rounds. For now, I can carry too much (2 40oz thermos of ice cold water) to walk. I find riding discombobulating and not enjoyable so I tend to avoid courses that force you to ride. The only time I will ride is if I'm an at an outing and we're playing a scramble.

Much prefer to walk with a push cart. That being said, every time I get to hole 18 on my home track I curse as it's a STEEP climb to the green which is on top of the hill. Guess they figured they'd sell more beer to people wanting a drink after climbing that mountain. That hill sucks when it's hot out. Makes a fantastically scary toboggan hill in the winter though!

When walking I find that I tend to play better as I have time to think about my next shot on the walk to the ball. In a cart it's more go go go and I find I don't have that luxury. I'll still get around in just over 2 hours for 18 holes if I'm on my own and I'm not waiting on others, so me walking definitely doesn't cause any pace of play issues.

I do both. If im crunched for time or overly hot. I will ride. I walk twilight a lot so i can play as long as zi can see and not let the pto shop dictste my time. I play solo alot and if I ride. I play up on folks all the time which interruots my game. If I walk, i hardly ever see anybody.

If i ride and playing solo, i can play multiple balls and practice along the wsy if I desire.

I live in Dallas and other than a few municipal courses, most nicer public tracks require all customers use a cart. Many are so spread out that walking isn't a realistic option if they hope to maintain any kind of pace of play. (Not to mention the health risks when the temps are in the triple digits.)

The last time I walked a golf course is when I lived up north. I didn't notice any difference with my game either way. With the advent of the push-cart....and the electric push cart, the exercise part of golf is pretty much gone anyway. I workout to get exercise....not walk a golf course.

I love to walk when I play a flat, compact course like Pinehurst or something like that (unless it's heat stroke weather of course). But at my course north of Atlanta the last time I played with someone wearing a pedometer the walk was 9 miles to play 18 holes up and down hills through the neighborhood. I was planning to wear my Apple Watch yesterday to see what it took to play cart path only, but I forgot the watch.
