so i have the p790 and they are great. Perform similar to the i500 and feel is similar imo maybe a tad softer with p790, but i just love the looks of the i500. i have a really bad habit of swiching clubs too often. wrx please help knock some sense into me and let me know what you guys think

I have the p790s but haven't seen the i500 in person. How do they compare size and looks wise? Topline? My only complaint about the p790 is the topline is a tad thick for me.

... I thought I might go thru the same thing when I first saw the i500 pictures. Thankfully in person I just didn't like the look. Didn't hit them but imagine the feel of a hollow head vs a foam filled head or at least no polymer insert would be another reason for me not to switch. But agree with others, if they look better to your eye why not pick them up if you can afford them? Prices for used P790's are not very good right now but the i500's are so new I imagine you could get back most of your investment if you decide they are not better than your P790's.

I hit the i500 in a shop the other day--really wanted to like them, but I gotta say the feel was not good to me (hollow and harsh). Now, I'm currently playing a Miura CB57 so maybe a feel comparison is not fair.

Do it WRX style and go Ping and then go for the black P790's :-)

Life is short!!!

I too loved the look of the Ping but preferred the feel and sound of the P790.

Both are pretty good at what they do best...long and high!

Depends, do you want to sacrifice feel for looks? Personally I'm more interested in how my irons feel when struck as opposed to how they look in the bag. Aside from offset, top line doesn't really matter much as long as it's medium to thin. I'd hit the i500 before you sell the P790's, to me the i500's felt like trash in whatever shaft combo I hit (PXLZ felt the best). If I were going Ping I'd get the i210's over the i500's.

If you do get the i500's, DO NOT GET THE POWERSPEC. Buddy of mine got them and he couldn't hold a green to save his life, 4 days on a golf trip and it was the most miserable rounds he's ever played. Yes, it was cool to see a 7iron travel 200yds, but at a major expense.

thanks everyone. i agree with pretty much everyone on here. the I500 has simliar topline to the p790 which are a bit thicker than i like. (had mp4 then miura cb57 which both had really thin toplines). Feel wise i only hit the 7 and to me it felt really good. i would say the p790 has a springier feel. I think im going to stick with the p790. I really do like the look of the i500 but you guys knocked some sense into me.

thank you

While not a good reason to switch, the top lines aren’t that similar. i500 is substantially slimmer. There are some comparison photos in one of the i500 threads on here that are pretty honest.

Both are nice looking but the P790's are more forgiving and feel better. There is another post of i500 feedback that has me thinking that more people are not as happy with there i500's. Most say they like the i210's better but it's your money. Test them both out.

See, this is the thing. Love the feel of my Miuras (CB57) and hit them pretty well, but wondering if the 790s or i500--because of height and distance--could gain me a couple strokes per round.

... Here is the thing. We all have different reasons for choosing the irons we play. I will give you my perspective as to why I am playing the P790's. I took out my Honma 737's yesterday and played them in 15 mph winds. Absolutely love the look at address and the feel is exquisite both going thru the turf and the soft feel of the ball coming off the face. But I have been spoiled by the performance of my P790's. The 790's feel good, a dense and solid feel but nothing like a solid one piece quality forging. That said:

1. I had 162yds dead into that 15+ mph wind and that is an 8 with my 790's so I would drop to a 7 or in this case a controlled 6 iron. The reduced spin of the 790's make them outstanding wind irons and a 6 would be plenty to achieve a low knockdown and have no problem reaching the green. But the 737's spin much more and even though I hit it dead center and flighted it just like I wanted and expected it to land just short or on the green, the ball came up a good 10yds short of the green and almost went in the water, that I thought was not even in play.

2. 3 days ago I had 191 to carry a nasty bunker with very deep grass surrounding it and the pin in back. Normally I would just play left of the bunker but needing a birdie to break 70, I decided to go right at the pin because I know my P790 4 iron was good to cover that yardage as it is my 195-205 club. Cleared the bunker and stopped 10 feet short of the pin. I had a similar shot yesterday and did not trust the Honma's with that shot, so I played 5-10 yds left of the bunker. Now that is the correct shot, but it is nice to know I can go right at the flag with the P790's if I absolutely have to.

... As always ymmv, and I am just giving you my experience with feel vs performance.

yes, less offset, less bounce, straighter, longer. you need to switch, pings will always hold their value better than taylormade
