Cut off saw for steel and graphite shafts

Looking to get a cut off saw for both graphite and steel shafts to replace my bench grinder which doesn't seem to do as well on steel shafts.

 

Currently between these two

People on here say the Harbor Freight model is fine but I am hesitant to go with that one. On the other hand I usually only do a handful like 10-20 shafts a year so I don't know if it's necessary to go with the larger tool. My main worry is the power 15 amp vs 5.5 amp when cutting steel shafts.

I have the 6 inch cut off saw from harbor freight and it has no issues cutting steel shafts.

I've got that same model as well. I recently picked it up and used it to cut down the shaft on my Scotty Mid Sur putter. I used it to cut the shaft, and then gave it a quick filing to de-burr the edges. Worked like a charm. I used a 20% off coupon and knocked the price down a bit.

I too have the harbor freight saw. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, it works perfectly for a hobbyist club builder. Like hookem mentioned, they have a 20% coupon right now as well.

I use a simple manual shaft cutter for steel:

And for graphite I use:

Both cut their respect shaft in <15s. Unless you own a shop or do dozens of builds per week I think it's a waste of money to not use these simple tools.

Took a shopping trip on my lunch break and it ended costing me $36 after the coupon.

Set up a vacuum system . It'll save your lungs if you cut a lot of graphite shafts.

I use an old shopvac to collect dust.

Great minds think alike. I have a shop vac hose rigged up behind the wheel to try and suck up as much dust as possible.

I guess I rough it with vice, hack saw (fine tooth) , and file.

Those two tools cost $19 combined. The Harbor Freight saw costs $36 on sale. It’s not exactly a huge savings.

I had the harbour freight chop saw but it broke, it was pretty old when I got it though. I’m back to the hack saw now :)

Harbor Freight works great, have ton a lot of steel and graphite with it, no issues at all
