Moving on to new set of G Irons

Recommended Posts

Well after a failed experiment with a set of Titleist 718 AP 1 irons, I have moved on. I have been plang a set of Ping G5's for nearly 10 years, moved onto a set ot Titleist AP1's after a demo day and short of dzeon rounds later realized they just werent the right club for me. I sold them on Ebay and made back most of my money. One of things that seems to fit me to Ping is the wider sole and more forgiving nature for a digger like me. Id hit both the G30's and G Irons at a demo day on the launch monitor a year ago and recalled they felt pretty good. So, my decision came down to G30 or G, but finding a set of G30's is very difficult and the G Irons nopw becoming more scarce. Id read, reviewed and seen that the only real difference between the G30 and G was a little more forgiveness in the G and slightly more but almost negligible distance. Well, I scoured around and couldnt find any G30's at any store etc but Dick's still has the G Irons 4-PW for $599. I bit on the G Irons and hope that these are a great replacement for my G5's. Im just looking for a bit more distance and forgiveness due to the improved technology.

Any experience here?

I haven't hit the G's but from what I seen they are similar and seems like the G30's were a bit smaller profiled sole wise, etc so some preferred. That said, I could have saved you a bunch depending on what shaft you use as I have a set of G30's just sitting here that were purchased new and used for one round til I switch iron sets!

In theory the G is longer because the face is thinner and more springy. In reality it's hard to tell the difference other than the G's are more tinny sounding on mishits. I'd try to work out something with lil'mike and return those G's to your local Dicks if you can.

Had a set of Gs, didn't like them. Felt 'harsh'. G400s are far better looking, feeling for me. Go get fit for a set of G400s and enjoy this great game. ;)

Funny, everyone has different likes an dislikes. I dont like the appearance of the G400's. The pro at my course loves the G irons doesnt like the G400. He said he hasnt sold many due to the appearance of the club. But thats always a matter of taste. Glad you love you G400's. Its funny, I have gone to fittnsg and regardless of what set of irons I am always plain old standard length, loft and lie with R Flex. I play S Flex in my woods but S Flex simply doesnt fit me in irons and getting a bit older (50+) the added flex in the R fits me better.

If you are uber-sensitive to pricing, get a slightly used set of G400's if you can. Incredible irons that everyone should play. They are THAT good!

I thought for my game the G30 was a "downgrade" from the G20 irons they replaced.

After just a year or so I went from G30 to G and it was, for me, a huge improvement. I found the soles on the G30 played less forgiving than either the G20 or G (although they don't particularly look skinny) and the G30 definitely did not launch the ball as easily or as high as G20 or especially G.

The hotter face (for high, flat, low-spin short irons) also seems to deliver for me.

So I'm saying you made the right call. The price difference between G30 and G in similar condition can't be more than 150 nowadays, if that. For me the G's are more of what a Ping G-series iron is all about than the G25's and G30's were. But that's just me. I value the handling of slightly fat contact and ease of elevating mid-irons above all else and that's where G excels.

To the OP's question:

You will find the G's to be both more forgiving and longer, at least compared to your G5's. There will possibly be one major difference, and that is that the G irons will be much less prone/likely to hit the ball right to left than the G5s. Beginning with the G10s, Ping moved a significant amount of weight out to the toe of G series irons, and it's stayed there ever since. For some golfers, the G5's were really hook-prone, and for some golfers the G5 did a nice job of mitigating a push or a slice because the face closed so quickly.

I'd be curious to know what it was about the AP1's that you didn't like; it's possible that if you were leaving the ball out to the right with the AP1's, you'll experience the same thing with the G's.

Issue I had with the AP1 was inconsistent ball flight. Alot of low shots and pushes. Just couldnt hit it well consistently.
