Smoothest swing you've seen live?

Recommended Posts

I do normally see the Scandinavian European Tour event when it comes to the Stockholm area. This year it does not do that unfortunately, but I have told the guys in the Gothenburg area to go see Raphael Jacquelin if they actually go to the course, he will be on the tournament this year. Jacquelins swing looks smooth on TV, but seeing it live is by far the most enjoyable swing I have seen live. Totally effortless but when you're there you see the power that casual movement produces. A pornographic type of experience to see that guy swing a golf club.

Your experiences of really smooth swings on course?

Charl Scwartzel... It will stop you in your tracks when you see it down the line on the range.

Have to agree. Saw him on the range at the Colonial a few years back and have never seen such consistent results. He hit 30+ drives in a row that looked identical.

There are going to be a lot of wonderful answers to this question. Good answers, featuring some of golf's most beautiful, admirable swings. You see it in the responses already posted.

But with all due respect, I think that anyone on this board now, who is barely old enough to have seen Sam Snead play at a time when he was not yet well into his sixties; that is the one, pure, shining example. If you aren't old enough to have seen that, then sincere congratulations on your youth and more power to you. For anyone old enough (born, say, before 1960; maybe a bit earlier since Sam turned 60 in 1972) I have the feeling that "Sam Snead" is the almost-universal answer to this question, even for folks who were (rightful) admirers of Hogan, Nelson, Gardner Dickinson, Al Geiberger, Tom Weiskopf, and even the great Bobby Jones. Snead is the smoothest, most perfectly rhythmic swing I have ever seen and there's almost no second place.

The thing that always gets me when I attended at Pro events is just how efficient their swings are.

They are no parts moving which don't need to be. So whilst they might be swinging at 120mph, it just doesn't look like that even on the guys with a really quick tempo.

Freddie for me personally. Swinging 117-120 looking like 100

Simplicity and monotony .... Moe Norman by a long shot

Aesthetics - Johnny Miller. Watched him a lot at the Canadian Open and got a lesson from him in the late 90's

Freddie...came out to my home course at the time (Bellport CC) for "Fred Couples Day"...apparently he was friends with the new pro...this was 1989 or 1990 I believe. Followed him for the front 10 (not sure if he played more), but the power and ease were mindblowing.

Plus he landed on the first fairway in a chopper...which was pretty cool!

Either my shadow, or Tom Purtzer's (his swing, not his shadow). I've only been to one event, though.

Tom Purtzer .....

He might be the smoothest swing I have ever seen on TV.

Snead in his prime, but I never saw him.

MacOGrady.

Smoothest doesn't always mean the best, but they are certainly the most pleasing to the eye. Kind of like a great dancer, or gymnast. Smooth, athletic, with great timing and rhythm. It helps if the person is tall, athletic, good looking and graceful by nature. Lee Trevino for example doesn't look pretty, nor did Hogan, or Jack, they were just good.

I second this. I saw Sam Snead in the late 1960's when I was a child and even now I remember how smooth it was. I saw him again hitting balls at an exhibition when he was was into his 80's and it was still very impressive.
