Apex Edge Pro shaved?

Anyone love the off set and feel of these in 3-5i but would love to have them in a 15% size reduction? I'm thinking of tinkering with shaving some size of them just to lookdown on a smaller head? Any advice? Obviously I need to add weight somehow but will cross that bridge after.

Normally I'm the last one to discourage tinkering but... I'd guess that if you were to remove that much size/weight the feel you love would be left on the shop floor. Sounds like a lot of work too. And maybe, just maybe, they'd be ugly as sin.

 

Do post some pictures if you decide to try it though. Unconventional mods are always interesting!

Here's the thing - Apex Edge Pros are the one Hogan iron that I've NOT loved the feel. So, to that extent, I should not care to deter a set being butchered.

 

But 15% is way too much liposuction. AEPs aren't THAT big. I've got a head in front of me and it measures no more than 3mm longer and height is virtually the same as a Mizuno TP19 blade. If you just squared off the toe you'd probably reach the same dimensions.

 

FWIW, I think the AEP looks bigger than it actually is, due to the thicker topline. I think you could shape and thin that and make the head look neater.

Just trade them for smaller clubs, much less work that way.

NUTTY thing to do unless you have experience and equipment. Take them to a golf shop at least and tell them what you are thinking of. I shaved some ceramic faced macs when I was a kid, a kooky experiment with Dad's machinery. If you decide to DIY, try an old club first, or you many regret it.

It's more work than forge a new head.

Whilst this isn't a job I'd take on, or even recommend, every forged iron head gets ground to its final shape and weight. And if you're good enough, or spendy enough, to have irons truly custom made - then these are the choices you'd get to make about blade length and top line. It'll make a bit of a mess of the chrome plating - but then maybe these are going to be stripped raw.

I do a little custom shaping on my wedge soles and toes, but you are trying to redesign the entire size and shape of the iron head and then figure out how to add back weight and refinish it so it doesn’t look like hell.

 

I’d say there is an incredibly high chance that it will end poorly, but if you like to tinker,....what the heck.

 

I’d personally try to find a single loose iron for a few bucks on eBay that matches the set to experiment on first as your guinea pig before you commit to the entire set.

 

If you ruin one loose 7 iron, no big deal.

Jag... I’m thinking size off the head along topline down to the toe, that won’t affect turf impact and might need weight added in the cavity

Porker - how are you planning to do the shaving? Hand files? Bench grinder? Hack saw?

Hehe... no, found a real old school bloke doing retro fitting from his back shed, he did a wedge for me and thinks out the box when it comes to serious tinkering... not sure I’m going ahead .. not until I go for a fitment week from now. If nothing really helps for my cross grip, I’ll revisit this idea.
