Hybrids disappearing? What to use between 3 iron and 3 wood

I would think that a high percentage of tour pros don’t use hybrids. They have the ability to make long irons and driving irons work the way they need. I’m assuming that hybrids fly too high for a fair amount of pros.

I’ve got 2 hybrids in my bag, though. A lot of the regular people I play with have hybrids as well. They fly high for me, and I haven’t learned how to command the low shot on a consistent basis yet. I’ve used a driving iron in the past that was similar distance and a little lower flight. I go with the hybrids because I don’t feel like I can screw up the shot.

Seems like a lot of people get turned off by the appearance of some hybrids, too.

There's nothing in the rule book that says you can't play drunk.

A lot of pros play a 5w,including JT and Rory, even though they go higher than hybrids. I think many pros are just concerned about the ball going left.

It’s really UDI or DIR these days. Now we have the GAPR options. I think it’s just a matter of filling the gap with the trajectory your looking for. For my swing these are my findings with various trials on head type and shaft material and specs.

UDI lower

DIR middle

Hybrid higher

No right answer for everyone, just have to test various set ups and pick the one that gets the trajectory, AOD, and consistency that your looking for. Good luck OP

I’m thinking of changing up my wood/hybrid set up. I currently have 16.5* 4 wood, 19* Hybrid (Adams XTD Super Hybrid) , and a 23* hybrid for my 4 iron. This has worked well for me for a while now, but I’m noticing that I’m missing a gap when I play a hole where driver is too much, but my 16.5* wood leaves me too far back.

I just ordered a Bio Cell hybrid that can adjust from 19-22*, and my 4 wood is adjustable from 16-19*. I originally ordered the Bio Cell hybrid to play at 19.5* for windier days, since my current 19* hybrid launches really high. I was thinking of playing the Hybird at 21.5* and the 4 wood at 17.5* or 18.5*. That will cover most of the gaps that my current setup has, and it’ll leave me a spot for a lower lofted 3 wood that I can use from the tee box on tighter holes or some where driver is too much. I’m probably going to find some sort of Cobra 3 wood since I currently have an extra shaft with a fairway adapter that will fit in it.

Personally I dont find myself "needing" a club for that gap. I can hammer my 2 Fli Hi 250 off the tee when the driver is acting up.

If I am more than 240 out on a par 5 I have no business doing anything other than taking my medicine and laying up. The reward simply doesn't come close to the risk.....

I sky hybrids and only hit about 30% of fairway wood shots well. I have just learned to manage around that "weakness" in my game. I need to practice putting a lot more than I need to work on a shot I would use less than 2 times per round.

I play a 3h and have no plans to switch anytime soon. I feel like some people want to ditch the hybrid because they look like they’re a better player if they have long irons in their bag, similar to wanting to play a muscle back or blade. There’s no shame in my hybrid game.

I always carried a hybrid in place of my 4 iron along with a 3w and 5w. As I've gotten more comfortable with long irons and my swing in general has improved I recently re-worked the bag a little. Now I run driver, 3w (set closer to 4w loft), 3 hybrid set to 19 degrees, 4iron. I've used the 4 iron and the 3hy off the tee a good bit recently since making the change and I'm pleased with the resutls, my hybrid wont be going anywhere anytime soon.

I only hook a hybrid when I set up to it like a fairway wood with the ball forward of center in my stance. To find the right setup, I imagine I'm hitting an 8-iron with a longer shaft.

In any case, a hybrid is not a precision club for me. I'm using hybrids to replace my 3- and 4-irons, and I expect the ball to go in a consistent direction for a predictable distance. I'm not trying to knock down pins with a 190-yard club.

I've gone Driver, 16.5* 4 Wood, 21* 7 wood, 20* hybrid. The wood has more loft, but is longer and has more mass so I get about 15-20 more yards than the 3 hybrid.

This is what I normally carry, with a 22* 4H instead of 20*. In fall when the rough is thinner and the winds are higher, I sometimes swap out the 7W for a 3H.

LOL

Actually it is pretty easy to find a tour player who doesn't play a hybrid. I just named 2. DJ doesn't have one. Snedeker just won and doesn't have one either. Brooks, Reed, Bubba, Day, Rose.... not sure what tournaments you are watching . LPGA?

Personally I have had a hybrid in play for 10 years.

Tour is probably not the best example. When you can shape the ball any way you want and hit various clubs various distances at will not to mention hitting 4 irons like 230+....

I wish i could find a hybrid that goes left! My miss is a slice right...going left would be such a nice fix.

there is no doubt that in my mind that most hybrid models go left. I own (but don't bag) a prototype deep faced adams (9031DF) 20* with an x100 and although it doesn't have a hook bias it is far easier to hit off line than my 2 iron and my normal miss is is a pull/hook. Instead of being left rough with an iron my hybrid would be left trees with the same swing. I love long irons personally and have tried hybrids simply to have a club that was better in the rough. i've owned 3 and hated all 3. what is the point for someone who can hit the ball solid and high whenever they want? the only time I miss the hybrid is if i'm swinging well and have a downhill lie to a tucked pin 235+ away which doesn't happen often enough to warrant a spot in the bag. fwiw I also don't like high lofted woods. I like clubs that I have to try to get up in the air rather than try to knock down.

I didn’t have much trust in my ping g30 hybrid until I finally decided to quit tinkering with graphite shafts. Installed a Modus 105 and it’s been great. Much more confidence. The rest of my irons are Modus 125, so the transition to hybrid is much easier.

Used to play a Bridgestone DI and it was good low ball off the tee but never trusted it much on fairway. If I took a trip to the UK then I would consider adding a DI to the bag. But hybrid plus steel is better where I play.

I’d consider a 5 wood as an alternative to my hybrid but it’s getting harder to find heavy graphite shafts that aren’t X or TX flex.

I play 3 wood, then U65 2 iron and a Cobra F6 hybrid I have turned up to 21 degrees. Covers all my gaps, and I am learning just to lay up on par 5s as I have more chance of wedging close and holing a putt than I do dropping 4 from a greenside lake....
