MEMBER REVIEWS: TPT Golf Shafts!! See What They Are Saying!!!

Recommended Posts

Had another go with it this morning. Overall I'd say it is a wash with the Raijin. I think the Raijin feels better and is longer, but the TPT is more accurate. The launch is a little too low from the TPT, so my next goal is to mess with the loft settings to see if I can dial it in a little better. It spins a little too low for me too, not by a lot though. Changing the loft will mess with the puring....so I'm interested in how that plays out.

Curious to see your comments on the puring with this shaft since the design is supposed to be more consistent with no spine.

I've played 15 rounds with my TPT and my driving has been incredibly consistent. It's probably the best shaft I've played. Unfortunately, it snapped on me today.

I was starting my downswing and I heard cracking. I couldn't stop my swing and by the time I got to the ball, the head was sideways and then it flew down the fairway.

I had a similar experience during my fitting. At the time, I assumed the head wasn't tightened properly. I can't say for sure what happened since I dropped the shaft and walked it off for a bit. Honestly, I was pretty angry at the time. My TM head is irreplaceable and seeing fly hard into the screen and roll around the floor didn't sit well.

I truly hate reporting this. I've got a big tourney tomorrow and Sunday and was locked in with this combo. And it's been nothing but awesome until this morning.

I wondered about this happening when I saw how thin the shaft really is. If you remove the grip, the butt end is probably the thinnest I've ever seen in my 20+ years as a clubmaker. I probably won't have any trouble at my swingspeed but could easily see others breaking shafts.

Wow, that is no bueno.... I previously read stories of this happening. Not good to see even one tester have this happen.

I've read and heard some things as well. My impression from that.... they were seeing some of this with the early prototypes. Made some adjustments. So maybe mine was an older version.

I know one thing for certain, these shafts perform. So I really hope they figure it out. I wouldn't hesitate putting it back in the bag, if I knew the odds of it happening again were low. It was so consistent.

The weather hasn't been cooperating with me and I haven't had a chance to spend much time with the shaft on the range or course, but did squeeze in 9 holes on Saturday in between rain storms and thought I would go ahead and post my thoughts and update them when I have a little more time with the shaft.

First a little about me. I'm 40 years old with three kids age 8 and under and don't get a chance to play a whole lot. My current handicap index is a 1.6 but has been as high as a 4 over the last couple of years. I'm not a bomber and am always looking for a little distance, especially as a get older. I'm pretty consistent with the irons and wedges and can be a streaky putter. My biggest weakness is the driver and it seems to have the biggest correlation with my score. When I'm hitting the driver well my scores reflect it and vice versa.

My current set up is a 2017 M1 440 9.5* with a Tensei Pro Orange V2 60TX shaft. I was fit last summer for the head but with the stock HZRDUS Yellow 6.5. I had a chance to pick up the PO from a member here last summer. It gave me slightly lower launch and spin numbers, but most importantly I have been much straighter with the PO and finding more fairways.

I did my TPT fitting with Mike Richardson at Golf MD in Lenexa Kansas. Mike is a great guy and fun to work with. I hit several with my current setup to get a baseline and then started testing the various TPT shafts. The first one I tested was TPT 16 MKP MT SW and was getting comparable numbers with my current set up, but tighter dispersion. I tested several others but was all over the place and the 16 MKP MT SW was the clear winner. After settling on that version of the TPT I tested a few other heads to see if there was a better combination. I tested the M3 460, M4 and G400 LST. I wanted to try an M3 440 but there wasn't one available. The M4 and G400 LST spun too much and the M3 was comparable to my M1, but my M1 still won out. At the end of the day Mike thought my M1 440 was as good as I was going to get. Overall, I didn't feel like I was swinging it that great and am always a little uncomfortable swinging indoors. My smash factor was a little low regardless of what combination I tried and regardless of how the strike felt to me.

As far as feel goes, the TPT felt a little heavier than my PO and I chalked it up to the PO being counterbalanced. The TPT felt a little softer to flex in my PO but Mike said the two shafts were pretty similar in terms of CPM. The TPT felt great during the fitting and the dispersion was definitely better than with my PO. Below is the Trackman Data from the fitting:

Current Driver: 2017 M1 440 9.5* Tensei Pro Orange V2 60TX

TPT Setup: 2017 M1 440 9.5* TPT16 MKP MT SW

Current Driver in Blue and TPT in Red

I received the TPT shafts a couple of weeks after the fitting and put it in my M1 to measure playing length and SW to compare to my current setup. It measured right at 45", same as my PO but the SW on the TPT came in at D8! The SW with my PO is D3. I grabbed a couple of old shafts and my old SLDR head to test SW just to make sure my scale is not off but it consistently was 5 to 6 SW points higher than any other combination I tried. I measured the raw weight of the TPT and PO with the grips (exact same GP multicompound on both) and adapters on. The PO came in at 115g and the TPT came in at 120g. Both seem accurate given the listed weight for each shaft.

I'm not sure if the fitter checked the SW during our fitting, but if he did, I wasn't aware that it was D8 or possibly even higher given the fitter's universal adapter. I'm curious if the higher SW is the reason for the tighter dispersion.

I did have a chance to play 9 holes and Saturday with the TPT and hit it great. I only hit it on five holes. 4 of the 5 were excellent shots right on target and the 5th was a slight pull, which is my typical miss. I will say that in my limited use it does appear that the ball flies a light straighter than previous shafts that I have tried. I've order a couple of lighter weights for my M1 so that I can get the SW down a little and play around with different options.

I need to give it more time but it looks promising. Overall, it performs similar to my PO but a little straighter. If I can get the weather and my schedule to line up, I'll get out and put a little more time into it with side by side comparisons and provide an update.

I had a chance to spend a little time with my new TPT on the range today. I also brought my PO V2 TX60 and my old Aldila Tour Green Stiff just for fun. I ended up buying a lighter head weight for my M1 to bring the SW down a little. I swapped a 7g weight for the standard 15g weight and it brought the SW down to D3.

The TPT is a great feeling shaft. I was hitting it on the screws and it feels very smooth and solid. I have a tough time describing or feeling the kick point in various shafts. It feels similar to my PO but smoother and definitely not as harsh on mishits as the PO. All that being said with the lower head weight the ball was flying a good 10 yards shorter than my PO and 10 yards shorter than when I have the standard weights in the M1 with the TPT. I guess this is to be expected with a lower overall head weight.

I tried it again with the standard head weights in and it measures D8 on my SW scale. It is noticeably heavier feeling but the distance gets back up there with my PO. I hit several balls and could really feel the heaviness and at D8 it is a little unruly. I will definitely give it a little more time on the course, but honestly, it is not giving me any better performance than my PO and my PO comes in at D3 and is much more manageable.

One good thing that came out of my session today was remembering why I originally liked the Tour Green. It out performed all three today in terms of distance. I used to play this in a SLDR 430. I consistently carried it 5 to 10 yards further than either the PO or the TPT but had a few left misses that I don't care for.

I have gotten on the course with the TPT shaft twice in the last few days. It has performed quite well especially when I go after it. I played in a scramble yesterday so I swung pretty hard and took some aggressive lines that ended with great results.

Just finished a round with the TPT shaft. I'm starting to find a little more consistency. The first few rounds I played with it, I seem to be spraying all over the place. This may have to do with the additional length since this one is set to play at 45 inches versus the 44.5 I was playing on my old shaft. As far as spraying goes I sprayed it a little bit today not as bad. Once I found my groove the shots were pretty long and powerful and in the fairway. Some good penetrating shots that landed and rolled the little (fairway were slow today. Still getting used to the shaft but it is very smooth. The low kick point is not quite what I'm used to typically I'm playing higher kick point or mid kick Point shafts. All in all it seems like a good shaft some of the spraying is definitely because of me. I just need to acclimate a little bit more. The one takeaway that I got from this, was that I am not a fan of cord grips LOL. I had them install Lamkin utx cord grips cuz I thought they looked cool and all the cool kids use cord. I think I'm going to have some Crosslines put on. Should always stick with what you know works.

Also I should note that I set my driver down to 7.5 degrees. Considering the design of this shaft and that it is pured I didn't notice any difference rotating it from 8.75 down to 7.5. Then again I don't know if I'm supposed to know the difference at my skill level.

Ok, i wanted to post detailed trackman reports but i went through a stretch of absolute near driver yips, i was constantly and consistently missing the sweetspot and getting horrendous numbers, especially in the smash factor department. i saw immediate improvement in dispersion with the TPT and beyond that the driver stats i have from that testing were worth very little, but i could tell right away there was something with this shaft that was pretty impressive. shoutout to Alex at Club Champion Deerfield who has helped me a great deal and fit me not only for this but other parts of my bag too.

So im skipping that and i want to move purely into feels, and impressions on my eye-test and on-course.

I'm 23, im a brand new golf pro, and alas some of you will be angry i was included in this test but i want to start by saying that i do not have a deal for any free equipment and with what's in my bag i paid what anyone else on this site has paid. just to clear that... I wanted to say I was a pro for credibilities sake and give you a feeling of how i want to review this shaft.

Now, on to this exceptional shaft.

The dispersion is what must be talked about first, its incredible, no two ways to ignore that fact, look at what Bryson did at the Northern Trust switching to it, (a prototype but alas, similar technology.)

I have an aggressive swing, 116-120 mph, always have, my miss is a move downwards at the ball too aggressively where i have a steep AOA and i release a little too early, causing huge spin, left-right movement and bad dynamic loft. I have worked diligently on that to help fix it and I have seen great improvement in consistency and better misses with the driver and more distance. Now, saying that the fit was easy, it did not take long to realize the 15 MKP-MT-SW was the right fit for me. Previously i bounced between two heads, the rogue subzero and the M3 460, settling easily on the M3, i found the rogue subzero to be too focused on distance and ballspeed without any help on dispersion. I found extremely similar ballspeed, distance and far greater dispersion with the M3 460 8.5. Next, I had played the Graphite Design AD-MT 7x for years, going back to the original 2015 M1 and then into the rogue. Only a couple months before getting fit for this TPT I got fit, at the same Club Champion, for a HZRDUS t1100 75g 6.5. I had some difficulty choosing between those shafts and for those that have hit it, the feel and loading of the HZRDUS is rough, it feels like rebar and plays a little bit like it too. My misses were a bit too large, and it turned out i got a defective HZRDUS shaft. That got me back in the AD-MT and while i saw positive results, again, loading and dispersion were the primary rough factors. Needless to say i was a little stuck on driver swings and driver shafts. mostly using the new replacement non-defective HZRDUS heading into the fitting for this shaft. I was extremely excited to be fit for something where the primary selling point is dispersion.

The first thing about the TPT that i have seen other reviews mention is the weight. I loved the feel immediately. I'm really big on swingweight, I believe removing that factor and making it consistent throughout your set is huge for a lot of players. I found with drivers in particular with the standard d1-d2 setup i would 'lose' the head in my transition, losing feel on where the face is. That may sound confusing but I think with a heavier swingweight, eventually landing on d7 I gained a lot of control with the club. With the HZRDUS and AD-MT I had an absolute gigantic (no two ways to say it) amount of lead tape on my M3 to get it to D7, when I put the TPT in and just gripped it i was shocked at how heavy it felt. The swingweight was into the E's and I removed 75% or more of the leadtape on the bottom of the club and it stayed at D7.

I saw very similar spin and launch numbers to my two other shafts (AD-MT and HZRDUS) maybe even losing a slight amount of distance to the HZRDUS but at my level of play and where I play its 90% about dispersion and to put it very simply I believe this shaft is unbeatable in feel, loading and dispersion. All while weighing in considerably lighter than my two other shafts. I had not playing anything lighter than 75 grams in about 5 to 6 years, and that goes back to when I was a much slower swinging 16-17 year old.

Im really impressed and I plan to update this with more information and pictures as I continue to use and test this shaft but I really don't see this shaft going anywhere, its stellar in so many ways. I would encourage anyone on this site that struggles with dispersion or loading the shaft to go check it out.

Thanks for reading, more coming soon.

Hey everyone -

I haven't posted a review yet and plan on doing so as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I ran into some trouble with my shaft and just got the replacement. I'm actually surprised I noticed the problem before having a catastrophic failure. To TPT's credit they handled the situation in a very professional manner and I'm glad to have my new shaft ready for me to test and review. Looking forward to it.

That is the second broken shaft out of the 15 people that were chosen for this review. That puts failure rate at around 13%! Is this a known issue with the TPT shafts and has this been occurring to others on this site that play TPT but aren't part of this review? Makes me nervous about the long term reliability.

I would say this alone has made the WRX review process worth while for TPT. Have this feedback and understanding is valuable information for the manufacturer (at least I would think it is valuable).

I’m starting to see TPT in more tour bags so whatever tweaks need to be made in the manufacturing process are going to fix the problems - if there are any.

Again, just my opinion but this is all going to make TPT better in the long run. The shafts are impressive to say the least.

It was hard to get good pictures but those cracks are towards the tip section. Maybe 2 or 3 inches from the where the tip and head meet.

Wow, crazy

I still haven't gotten mine yet, and I'm dying to. I had the WORST driving weekend of my year, including a tournament round. Everything was just slicing hard to the right, which I haven't done since high school. Normally play a controlled pull-fade, and find 60%+ of fairways...but I went 0 for 6 with my driver on Sunday, and 0 for 1 on Sunday (before benching it). I'm talking, 40-50 yard slices well right of the fairway. Honestly, quite nuts and infuriating. I know the TPT shaft really helped with dispersion during the fitting, so I really hope I can get mine in hand soon.

And man, seeing all these broken/cracked shafts is nuts. I mean, if Jason Day, Patrick Reed, and Bryson DeChambeau are swinging them on tour, with their speed, and not breaking them...

I kind of feel bad for TPT right now. I mean there's a lot of pros gaming them right now across the various tours. Rose won I think three different tournaments when he had his TPT, and then all the guys you mention Jacob. Ryan Moore plays a fairway shaft and others I'm sure.

Then TPT wants to do some WRX testing and this happens..... Seems like a crazy fluke otherwise how in the world would so many pros be playing them?

Not one of the 3 guys on tour playing them are using retail models, they all have blank blue spec bands, so they are likely made for them specifically. Could be a little stiffer or something for these guys as they all swing pretty hard at it.

The model I was fit for was specifically designed for Rose - it should be plenty stout to handle anything I can throw at it.

All we can do is report what we see. That’s the gig we signed up for. I wasn’t thrilled about having to share the bad news. Especially considering how well it performed for me. Seven iron accuracy with your driver is kind of hard to find. At least for me.

I started researching these months ago and there were breakage claims back then. I don’t think it’s a fluke. I also don’t think it’s strictly a swing speed issue. But that’s all just speculation, based on stuff I’ve read.

I’m hoping they found a fix and some of us got older shafts.

It’s a new company with new technology. There’s going to be growing pains. Based on what I’ve seen on tour, and in person, they’re on to something.

it's a review - with the good bad and ugly. we forget that it's ok to say something that isn't "glowing". they are also not obligated to respond publicly on the forum either to broken shaft. growing pains or not - this wont be the first or last time this will happen. shafts break.

being patient is the tough part - especially with the results you experienced. best of luck in the replacement! it will work itself out.

True dat to scottaz in post 86 and swanry30 in post 87.

I'm definitely choppin at the bit to get going again with the shaft. During fitting and the few holes I play on-course I was seeing those low-spinning knuckle balls flying down the center of the fairway.

I really hate seeing this. I was treated so well by all involved in this process and really love my TPT shaft.

I would think they should perhaps comment in here, because these two problems can't help them....
