New SM7's

So y’all are saying if you clean off the finish of the jet black models with CLR you leave a “raw(er) finish that won’t rust? I love the look of the matte bare metal look that some of you have that removed the black but I do not like rusting wedges. What keeps it from rusting?

In a nut shell and straight from the Tour Van... The Jet Black finish soaks into the pores of the 8620 metal and "seals" them off from rusting. The raw finish that is a result of removing the black (did mine with distilled white vinegar) is a much darker finish than a true raw wedge from the tour or wedge works.

I'm sure in true GolfWRX fashion there will be somebody with more knowledge of the process and go into much more detail than needed. LOLOLOLOL

In my experience, the online vokey wedge fitter is spot on. I did the online fitting, and them went to get fitted by our titleist fitter.

I got 4 wedges (P-L), and the only debatable issue was whether to get an 8 degree or 12 degree bounce on my gap wedge - and that took a “50 yard shot” bake off to decide. All others were exact same between online tool and and fitting...all the way down to thd D grind on the LW....

How much difference did you notice between the 8 and 12 bounce on the 50 yard shots with the gap? Exactly where I am at as I really like the SM7 F grind.

Man, really struggling to pull trigger on these vs the Taylormade MG wedges. I’ve never owned Vokeys and most of the grind options intimidate me. I do love the idea of the black stripped down and no rust, though.

Matte metal finish with no glare? Yes sir.

The hi toe MG just has me wavering.

Back when I bought a new set of Vokeys ever five years (whether I needed them or not) there wasn't really this whole "grind" business. Just various lofts and a few lofts available in two different bounces.

Now that I've returned to the Vokey fold I'm using a "F" or "Full" grind on my 52 and 56 degree which are much like the plain old Vokeys of 10-15 years ago. Only my 60-degree "D" grind is one of the modern shapes and I bought it mostly because I saw it in the store and liked the shape of the sole.

So I'd advised not getting caught up in the whole "L vs. T for my Lob" kind of thinking and just buy F-grinds!

That is likely to happen. I play a 50° GW from my set of irons and only 2 wedges. So I am waiting for my new irons to come in to see if I need a 54° or 56°. Leaning towards 54°. That is the issue. The 60° will likely be some kind of weird grind as i use it for zero full shots and only shots around the green. The 54 tho,... that is where i need to understand the bounces more. Or really more my swing. I typically play a lot of forward shaft lean in my chipping. Not really ideal.

can the black be coked to rust?

Yeah. I bought the sm6 and sm7 black finish and put them in CLR and they are rusting well.

Saved some good $ instead of ordering a raw Vokey wedge.

Are they actually rusting? I saw several say that the jet black put in Clr takes the finish off but they don’t rust. Just look raw then.

The individuals who say the jet black stripped wont rust are wrong.

They will rust, they will continue to rust, and when you wipe them down they rust right back up even more than before.

You are basically being told because you didnt spend $200 + yours can not be as good. Mine are pretty rusty, and continue to rust every day. The more I use them the rust comes off in certain places. Then when I put them up they rust right back up even more.

The blacks do rust which is evident in the picture above but the way it seems to rust is very different to the RAW ones.

I own the RAW and really don't like the rusting I have to take off some every few weeks, being off sandy turf helps here.

I don't understand the fascination with rusting at all.

I am curious if anyone has compared the D-grind with the V-grind. The description is basically the same but 2 degrees less bounce in the V. I'll be replacing my 60 S grind soon and looking at either of these options. It'd be nice to save $45 on the D grind but that isn't a deal breaker for me if the V is more playable.

I like the SM7 - had the Tour Chrome and liked the 50-08, could even get out of 30-40 yard bunkers with it to green. Was not entirely comfy with F Grind but it was fine on a Gap. Had the 56-10 in S grind but I like more relief, similar to the 60-08. I sent them to a friend.

But I miss the sublime balance of the SM7's - for me, their greatest attribute. They feel hefty but are lighter in weight than the Ping 2.0 Stealth.

I still have a 60-12 D Grind that was hanging around since April and took it to the range - just an excellent wedge, so I ordered a 54-08 M Grind bent to 59 for more versatility around the greens. It's in Raw and Hand Ground, Tour Grind to take a little off the toe and the smoothing of angles thing. Want to try it. The cost was as much as a Miura and I love Miura. I just like the shape of the SM7 a little bit more.

As to Raw, they have something they put on the finish to make it more durable - as durable as the Chrome is what they say.

Hey guys,

First of all, still kind of new to WRX and thank the golf gods for this site. I've been playing vokeys in progression for the past 4 years. I found all of the info to be spot-on from the feel of the wedges to the grind talk etc. I had the black sm6's (52,56,60)and absolutely loved them! Got fitted into the new sm7's (also black) and find the look of the club from address to be fairly "tiny" in comparison to the SM6 line. Mainly in the lesser lofted wedges 50,52,54. Though the new re-intro of the "D" grind has made bunker shots like butter... I find full shots with the lower lofts and much smaller look of the club at address to throw me off a little and thought I would just get used to it but after about 3 months its not getting any better. Anyone else notice this or just me? Let me be clear...the sm7's are phenomenal and I believe this is merely an aesthetic issue of personal observation that is causing me to have remarkable trouble. Thought about getting all of them at 2 degrees higher loft and having them bent down to maybe get the benefit of the slightly larger face with the lower loft I am looking for(attempt at best of both worlds).. But unsure if this would actually solve the issue. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I do not feel like spending all that $ and it be useless. Thanks all... And keep up the posts... The members on here are amazing
