What are the best Mizuno irons ever?

I always wondered why I couldn't get the MP33s out of the bag...

Turns out their MPF is 419, which is higher than even the MP18 MMC at 371!

Even the 900F are only 438.

The almost equally gorgeous MP18 MB are a lowly 284.

One of the "secrets" to the classic and most popular Mizunos, is their relatively low sweet-spot heights (Actual Vertical COG). This makes them easier to hit solid from normal and tight lies for most players. Keep in mind that the center (COG) of a golf ball is .840"....

Mp-33: .718"

Mp-14: .687

Mp-30: .653

Mp-32: .750

Mp-4: .762"

Mp-5: .789

Contrast that with the latest series of Mp-18's, which all have sweet-spots higher than .840"

I was not aware of any of this. All I know is that my MP-30 always felt heavy at the end of the club to me and they made the greatest, "thunk" when hit solid. Would you have this data for the MP-54, as I'm curious?

MP4’s without a doubt.....searched for a long time to get the right balance of soft but solid feel, combined with the right length heel to toe.

But of tech in the muscle shape moving the cog through the lofts.

Just love mine, just about bought another set yesterday to stick in the cupboard!!

Played 60's for the last 5 or so seasons, and they're just about the perfect iron in my opinion. Great shape, good forgiveness, incredible feel, and awesome launch. I'm currently buying a set of 33's off of a buddy, and when they're flushed...good lord! They definitely have the sweetest feel I've ever experienced, but when your swing isn't quite blade ready, the 60's are hard to top!

Man how many sets of MP60s did I have....I think 5. Great iron.

Where can one find these measurements for, ya know, every single club ever made? :-)

Edit: never mind, found it in the MPFs listings.

  • 1 year later...

Happened to come across this thread from awhile ago. Really fun reading. Have always been a huge Mizuno fan as well. As an FYI, I have brand new sets of MP-33s (1-PW) and MP-32 (2-PW) that are both still in their original Mizuno boxes. They were spare sets for me that I've never used.

Mizuno irons that I've played were:

MP-14

Mp-29

MP-30

MP-33

MP-32

TZoid True

TZoid Pro II

Of those, the 14s, 33s and 32s were just so sweet! Hard to pick a favorite but I will say the 14s had a shape that I always loved.

Choosing between the MP-32 and MP-33 would be like choosing a favorite child.

I’ve played 60, 900T, H5 and 18.

Demo the 919T and 20MB; thank goodness my 2018 Callaway Apex MB performed better.

Missed out on the 64 and 4, which is the coin flip for me on Mizunos best. At the time, standard shaft offering wasn’t a thing unfortunately.

Since I have been disappointed with Mizuno lately, I feel so free !

MP20. Stay with me a second. There aren't a lot of massive difference between blades. At the same time I think there have been refinements to the looks (in the bag and at address), turf interaction, and feel. I have had a my fair share of mizuno iron sets, and picked up many more. If there is one thing they have whiffed at more often than many admit, the PW has looked like a shovel on occasion. Heel was too high, blade length too long, boxy profile. I had a set of T Zoid Pro II's, nice set but that wedge....woof. The MP-20 wedge has a much cleaner profile, reduced blade length, shorter heel height, and looks fantastic (best Mizuno PW ever). Looks in the bag: MP-32 just can't be beat, but the MP-20 is right there. Love the MP-14/29 inspiration. Love that they took the Mizuno name off, you know what it is.... Turf interaction: the MP grind has been refined quite a bit over the years. http://www.golfwrx.com/546076/danny-lees-mizuno-mp-32-irons-the-real-inside-scoop/ The camber and bounce have been progressively improved/increased. Better misses, less chunks. No more flat soles with sharp leading edges anymore (Best turf interaction...for me). The feel: I'm going to buy into the copper underlay, they MP20 feels as good or better than anything else.

Can they make it better? Tungsten in the toe on the long irons to bump the MOI. Ping does it, Cobra does it, the MMC does it. Do it in the blade! That way I don't have to combo my set up.

Been playing Mizuno blades for almost 23 years (all the way back to freshman year of HS). I've had 5 sets of irons during that period and all but one have been Mizuno's (had a 6 month love-affair with some RAC LT's but it ended in a bitter divorce).

For me, the best irons Mizuno has ever created are:

MP-37 (played these for almost 11 years)

MP-14 (2 of my 5 sets were these; still own both)

MP-33

MP-4 (still gaming these after more than 5 years; absolute perfect iron)

JPX-900 (obviously not from the MP line but these were truly unreal irons; perfect shaping and a nice blend of forgiveness)

Love my 33s. Astonishingly easy to hit well and they just feel incredible.

Tried MX-23 (pretty good) and JPX 800 Pro (bigger but surprisingly soft feel).

Currently reshafting the 33s with DIY MOI specs.

Old thread, may have posted in here before, but what the heck. Let's do it again!

I have to put in a Top Spot vote for the MS-11 / MP-11. Even when the 33s came out, there were still a great many at the time who said the 11s were better. They were the set that introduced more bounce in blades, even the 2 iron has 5* bounce.

My second choice has the same bounce specs as the 11s, the MP-37s. I had a set about 14-15 years ago, traded them in a bout of stupidity. Found a set at 2nd Swing last summer for a whopping $220, in quite lovely condition. How could I not? These are in the bag for my first round of the season.

The MP-14 are another fave for me. They were the set that got me started on my Blade Ho path. Really quite excellent. In spite of how they got me started, I've never owned a set. At this point, probably never will. I'll just have to make do with the stash I've got lying around....

I’ve owned the Mp-30’s, Mp-32’s ,Mp37s Mp-33’s and, Mp-67’s ..........

I liked the 67’s and 33’s the same followed by the 37’s and 32’s which I liked equally.

I think the difference from all sets mentioned is marginal at best.

Same lofting and forging, with fractional differences in flight, that I couldn’t recognize by eye.

Currently gaming 54s and I picked up an old set of 32s off BST that I game on occasion. Have hit 53, 58, 59, 64, 15 and 4.

I'd have a hard time choosing between the 32s and the 4s. 64 and 59 both felt great. Wasn't a fan of the 15, it felt dead.

From what I have owned it the last 10 years, MP-4 are my favourites. I haven't gamed any of the legendary classics to provide an opinion.

Curious, why not much love for the MP-9 ? I have re-read this entire thread and the 9 is seldom mentioned in comparison to the 14 / 32 / 33. What was "wrong" with it ?
