MEMBER REVIEWS: TPT Golf Shafts!! See What They Are Saying!!!

Recommended Posts

Wow. Yes I've heard the rumors floating around about these shafts snapping as well. Luckily I've not experienced it in the ones I own.

I continue to be impressed by this shaft. I will echo the comments about the swingweight. My 16 LKP-MT-SW was about 2 points heavier than I had expected. Luckily I have some spare weights and was able to reduce the head weight to get it where I want it.

Nothing is safe in my bag!

I still haven't gotten mine yet, and I'm dying to. I had the WORST driving weekend of my year, including a tournament round. Everything was just slicing hard to the right, which I haven't done since high school. Normally play a controlled pull-fade, and find 60%+ of fairways...but I went 0 for 6 with my driver on Sunday, and 0 for 1 on Sunday (before benching it). I'm talking, 40-50 yard slices well right of the fairway. Honestly, quite nuts and infuriating. I know the TPT shaft really helped with dispersion during the fitting, so I really hope I can get mine in hand soon.

And man, seeing all these broken/cracked shafts is nuts. I mean, if Jason Day, Patrick Reed, and Bryson DeChambeau are swinging them on tour, with their speed, and not breaking them...

Not one of the 3 guys on tour playing them are using retail models, they all have blank blue spec bands, so they are likely made for them specifically. Could be a little stiffer or something for these guys as they all swing pretty hard at it.

The model I was fit for was specifically designed for Rose - it should be plenty stout to handle anything I can throw at it.

Hard to say then, its not like these shafts are breaking at the tip from install issues either, they are all breaking more towards the middle from what i've seen. Hopefully they figure it out before one snaps mid round on a tour player in the hunt.

The weather hasn't been cooperating with me and I haven't had a chance to spend much time with the shaft on the range or course, but did squeeze in 9 holes on Saturday in between rain storms and thought I would go ahead and post my thoughts and update them when I have a little more time with the shaft.

First a little about me. I'm 40 years old with three kids age 8 and under and don't get a chance to play a whole lot. My current handicap index is a 1.6 but has been as high as a 4 over the last couple of years. I'm not a bomber and am always looking for a little distance, especially as a get older. I'm pretty consistent with the irons and wedges and can be a streaky putter. My biggest weakness is the driver and it seems to have the biggest correlation with my score. When I'm hitting the driver well my scores reflect it and vice versa.

My current set up is a 2017 M1 440 9.5* with a Tensei Pro Orange V2 60TX shaft. I was fit last summer for the head but with the stock HZRDUS Yellow 6.5. I had a chance to pick up the PO from a member here last summer. It gave me slightly lower launch and spin numbers, but most importantly I have been much straighter with the PO and finding more fairways.

I did my TPT fitting with Mike Richardson at Golf MD in Lenexa Kansas. Mike is a great guy and fun to work with. I hit several with my current setup to get a baseline and then started testing the various TPT shafts. The first one I tested was TPT 16 MKP MT SW and was getting comparable numbers with my current set up, but tighter dispersion. I tested several others but was all over the place and the 16 MKP MT SW was the clear winner. After settling on that version of the TPT I tested a few other heads to see if there was a better combination. I tested the M3 460, M4 and G400 LST. I wanted to try an M3 440 but there wasn't one available. The M4 and G400 LST spun too much and the M3 was comparable to my M1, but my M1 still won out. At the end of the day Mike thought my M1 440 was as good as I was going to get. Overall, I didn't feel like I was swinging it that great and am always a little uncomfortable swinging indoors. My smash factor was a little low regardless of what combination I tried and regardless of how the strike felt to me.

As far as feel goes, the TPT felt a little heavier than my PO and I chalked it up to the PO being counterbalanced. The TPT felt a little softer to flex in my PO but Mike said the two shafts were pretty similar in terms of CPM. The TPT felt great during the fitting and the dispersion was definitely better than with my PO. Below is the Trackman Data from the fitting:

Current Driver: 2017 M1 440 9.5* Tensei Pro Orange V2 60TX

TPT Setup: 2017 M1 440 9.5* TPT16 MKP MT SW

Current Driver in Blue and TPT in Red

I received the TPT shafts a couple of weeks after the fitting and put it in my M1 to measure playing length and SW to compare to my current setup. It measured right at 45", same as my PO but the SW on the TPT came in at D8! The SW with my PO is D3. I grabbed a couple of old shafts and my old SLDR head to test SW just to make sure my scale is not off but it consistently was 5 to 6 SW points higher than any other combination I tried. I measured the raw weight of the TPT and PO with the grips (exact same GP multicompound on both) and adapters on. The PO came in at 115g and the TPT came in at 120g. Both seem accurate given the listed weight for each shaft.

I'm not sure if the fitter checked the SW during our fitting, but if he did, I wasn't aware that it was D8 or possibly even higher given the fitter's universal adapter. I'm curious if the higher SW is the reason for the tighter dispersion.

I did have a chance to play 9 holes and Saturday with the TPT and hit it great. I only hit it on five holes. 4 of the 5 were excellent shots right on target and the 5th was a slight pull, which is my typical miss. I will say that in my limited use it does appear that the ball flies a light straighter than previous shafts that I have tried. I've order a couple of lighter weights for my M1 so that I can get the SW down a little and play around with different options.

I need to give it more time but it looks promising. Overall, it performs similar to my PO but a little straighter. If I can get the weather and my schedule to line up, I'll get out and put a little more time into it with side by side comparisons and provide an update.

I had a chance to spend a little time with my new TPT on the range today. I also brought my PO V2 TX60 and my old Aldila Tour Green Stiff just for fun. I ended up buying a lighter head weight for my M1 to bring the SW down a little. I swapped a 7g weight for the standard 15g weight and it brought the SW down to D3.

The TPT is a great feeling shaft. I was hitting it on the screws and it feels very smooth and solid. I have a tough time describing or feeling the kick point in various shafts. It feels similar to my PO but smoother and definitely not as harsh on mishits as the PO. All that being said with the lower head weight the ball was flying a good 10 yards shorter than my PO and 10 yards shorter than when I have the standard weights in the M1 with the TPT. I guess this is to be expected with a lower overall head weight.

I tried it again with the standard head weights in and it measures D8 on my SW scale. It is noticeably heavier feeling but the distance gets back up there with my PO. I hit several balls and could really feel the heaviness and at D8 it is a little unruly. I will definitely give it a little more time on the course, but honestly, it is not giving me any better performance than my PO and my PO comes in at D3 and is much more manageable.

One good thing that came out of my session today was remembering why I originally liked the Tour Green. It out performed all three today in terms of distance. I used to play this in a SLDR 430. I consistently carried it 5 to 10 yards further than either the PO or the TPT but had a few left misses that I don't care for.

I've been playing the Tour Green Stiff for a while and can't find something to kick it out of the bag. I guess that's why they say, "if it ain't broke. . ."

a few components breaking in the entire production lot should not be cause for major concern. just think - years ago when i first joined the board it was 100% roll the dice on almost every unknown shaft. you couldn't find a "TPT" (enter your favorite cult shaft here) shaft unless it was a pull from the tour van. you didn't know tipping, condition other than a low resolution picture, etc. once enough of us were stupid to buy them and put the puzzle together were we able to know trimming or any other real details.

TPT sounds like it has a good offering. if they offered a Jason Day shaft to retail or you were able to source one - i would consider looking their direction.

Just got my TPT shaft put in and started to get out on the course. As with a lot of other testers a lot of bad weather up here in the Northeast. Will get to the review ( and photo's) later but wanted to start with a little background. I am 59 years old and have been playing golf for 45 years back when we had persimmon heads and balata balls. Currently carry a 2 handicap with a SS of 94 +/-. So while 300 yard drives are not in my bag I tend to be fairly consistent and generally find the middle of the club face with my driver. I was fitted for my M4 by Bill Cho at NOVO Golf, in Tappan NY. Besides having Trackman etc, a great feature at NOVO is that the hitting bay opens up to the driving range so you can see the flight of the shots. You are not hitting balls into a net. So while Trackman provides some great data you can also see the flight of the ball, curvature etc.

Bill has all of the TPT shafts on display. We played around with different shafts, easily changing them into a demo head that he has, as well as playing around with lofts. What gave us the best results: ball speed, spin, launch etc. was the 17 MKP MT SW, tipped 1 inch. 10.5 degrees set to 11.25 degrees.

Photos, data, results to follow.

Really interested in trying for myself, but buying with confidence is really hard with two reviewers already having issues with them cracking.

Piggy backing on this, can someone find out if those would have been replaced if purchased rather than being a part of this testing thread?

I believe the answer is yes. There's a good chance we'll see TPT chime in on here shortly.

Does anyone have a contact at TPT? My fitter seemed a tad confused on the process, and how he'd get the shaft from them. I don't think he ever forwarded them my results, and just assumes they'll know what shaft to send him.

Hmmm. That doesn’t jive with my experience. The fitter I had suggested the shaft and this is what they sent him... But there was some confusion about the process initially

If you're concerned I'd start with Brian (knudson81) and let him know your concerns. When my shaft cracked I sent him a PM and he got me in contact with TPT.

I played another round yesterday and I feel like I’m really getting used to the TPT. I hit the ball very well off of the tee. The last two rounds were big confidence builders.

We want to thank all the GolfWRX Members who have taken the time to contribute to this thread. We’re especially grateful for the Reviewers who have been so thoughtful in contributing their in-depth feedback and observations about our shafts and technology.

We couldn’t be more excited to be helping you hit longer, straighter, and more consistent drives, and seeing the screenshots and launch monitor data that shows exactly these results is a tremendous thrill for us. TPT Golf shafts aren’t made like any other golf shafts, and to hear you say that we’ve been able to help you achieve a new level of performance is the goal we set out to accomplish when we decided to start making golf shafts four years ago.

As a company, we’re committed to challenging the known boundaries of weight, strength, and performance. Quality is of utmost importance to TPT Golf, and we’re currently investigating the problems that scottaz and ebrasmus21 have experienced.

We’re looking forward to the continued thoughts and feedback of the Reviewers and all GolfWRX Members in this thread.

Dechambeau just signed on with LA Golf shafts. Wow after a win.

What's that got to do with TPT and this thread?

Because he literally just won The Northern Trust 2 days ago with a TPT shaft in his driver.

Ahh I see, makes sense now. I initially thought you were thinking that LA shafts was TPT. My mistake.

Thanks to TPT Golf and Gwrx for selecting me to test this shaft out! I also want to say thanks to Club Champion.

My current index is 1.9. I was fit for my driver at the Kingdom by TM in January. I have the tendency to hook the ball. I was playing a Ping G400 LST with a KK DC 70TX, tipped 1" and moved to the TM M3 440 Fujikura Atmos Black 8TX, also tipped 1". My SS at the Kingdom was about 116 but I was pretty rusty. I play my M3 at 7.5*.

I've been having the best driving season of my life. I've hit more fw's and my misses have been manageable. I do feel like I'm working pretty hard with this set up but the results have been great.

I was fit for my TPT shaft at Club Champion in Philly by Steve Harrow. The 15 LKP/LT/LW was the clear winner, but to be honest, it didn't blow me away. But hitting balls indoors rarely goes well for me. Steve suggested tipping it 1.5". and built it to play 45.5", the same as my current shaft.

When I took it out on the range to test, I wasn't expecting to like it much. It's a 20g drop for me and I need to feel I'm in control with my driver. Heavy has always worked best for me. I fully expected to be yanking it and worried my timing would be a mess. First swing....fast, easy, long. It felt explosive. The sound was a bit more muted.

I spent 40 minutes on the range and did not hit one ball left. As a matter of fact, I was now fading the ball. One after another. That's not my game. I tried drawing the ball and they went dead straight. I use a pretty weak grip, by necessity. I went a little more neutral and finally was able to hit a draw.

I went out on my course to hit balls on a few holes. Same. Fade or straight. I was also seeing about 10 more yards vs my current shaft.

I played three rounds since then and more of the same. I hit both shafts in the same settings side by side on the course and confirmed I was about 10 yards longer with the TPT. We were wet early in the week during this testing, so no roll out.

This afternoon, I was getting a lesson and before we got too far into it, we got some numbers. My SS was around 120-121, ball speed around 174 vs.116-119, BS 170 with my Atmos. Dispersion with both are great but the TPT just feels easy and will not go left. I am launching the ball higher 15 vs.13 but my carry is about 10 yards longer. The spin is a little higher, around 2600-2800.

It's early still but so far I'm pretty shocked by the results. I did not expect this. I've never played a shaft this light. It feels less stable than it performs. By that I mean it feels a little more lively than what I'm used to but I feel very connected.

It's not a big surprise I'm moving faster with a lighter shaft. But the same dispersion with the extra speed is an upgrade.

Looking forward to getting back out with it this weekend. Feel free to ask any questions and if you're in the area, hit me up for a test!

How'd you like the experience at Club Champion? I've heard of their location in Bala Cynwyd but I haven't checked it out yet.

The guys there were great. It looked like they had a lot of shaft options and heads but I didn't pay much attention to it since I was only focused on the TPT fitting. I'm not a big fan on indoor fittings to be honest but I'm sure they would do a good job. They nailed my driver shaft.

Ebrasmus21 is sad. Today was not a good day.

Could you elaborate on that? Another shaft issue?

Yes, same thing as before. Shaft broke at the tip. TPT has another shaft being sent out to me.

Still open-minded to TPT and I know from my fitting that I got great numbers and loved the feel. looking to get some quality time on-course with the shaft before I can provide a meaningful review.

For the 3 (has there been more?) shafts that have broken in the test group, have they all been the same model/profile?

Does anyone know how/why this is happening?

I believe they've all been the LKP LT LW model. I haven't been given a reason as to why it's happening.
