PXG Gen 2 vs TM 790 GC2 Data

I just received my P790 irons and thought I compare them to the PXG Gen 2 I play. The PXGs are 0311T 7-PW and 0311P 4-6 irons. Both sets are shafted with Aerotech i95 stiff shafts and are set up to the same length and lie.

 

I love the PXGs, but needed a second set for our vacation home, and didn’t want to drop the $ on a second set of PXGs, especially sine I really like the black finish. The 790s are also finished in black.

 

I compared the irons during 2 different sessions on a Foresight GC2 using Titleist Pro V1x balls.

 

The differences were pretty consistent across the set and would summarize as follows based on FR1 software flight model:

 

- carry distance was very close between sets on a club by club basis; I.e. both 8 irons carried 151 on average and 6 irons carried 182 on average with little variation on well struck shots

- the P790s launched 2 degrees higher and their descent angle was about 2 degrees steeper as well

- the PXGs had created between 800 and 1000 RPM more backspin than the P790s

 

I like the feel of both irons and am looking forward to getting the 790s on the course this week. I do have a concern that 790s are going to run out too much on firm greens, but I’ll have to see if the descent angle offsets the reduced spin in real life (vs the flight model of the software).

thanks for the review! Your data seems consistent to other reviews. 790's spin less. Wonder where the lofts of each are if you knew?

Remember static lofts don't tell the whole story. CG and launch profile can have two clubs of identical loft perform very differently.

OP, thanks for the info. Do you have any of the spin number data from both clubs?

 

I would be interested to see if the PXGs spins more than what is normally expected or if the 790s spin less than what is normally expected (i.e. ~ 6,000 rpm for a 6 iron and 8,000 rpm for an 8 iron).

 

I am interested to read your on-course results, specifically if the additional 2* in descent angle in the 790s offsets the reduction in spin.

That is a huge gap between an 8 and 6 iron. 31 yards means best case is a 15 hard gap if you hit your 7 166.
