Mizuno Recommendations

CC provides a printed out spec sheet of the clubs they fit you for. It's a deliverable item of your fitting. They either hand it to you in person, or email afterwards.

 

If you don't have that, hit them up and ask them to send it to you. It has every detail of the clubs on it.

 

 

 

For the last four years, I have been playing with Taylor Made RocketBladez game improvement irons. I recently did a full bag fitting at Club Champions and learned that it might be worth switching to blades. I hit several brands, but really enjoyed the feel of the Mizunos. (Unfortunately, I don't remember which model I hit.) I am a 9 handicap, but I'm not sure I'm ready to spend $1200 on a new set of blades and play them 100% of the time. But I am interested in getting a used set and practicing with them and then, as I'm ready, blending them into my bag.

 

Can you recommend a good Mizuno iron set to consider?

Okay so i have been playing Mizuno MP32 since they came out. I also game 712 CB ( different shafts for) anyway. The specs for the MP18 vs MP32 are almost identical.

I’m just saying I would recommend a good clean set of MP32 s , They have been a great club for a lot of players through the years. And you will save a lot of money you can spend on other things. Cheers and good luck. Mizuno makes wonderful equipment.

I switched from mp53s to mp64s a couple years ago and haven't looked back. They are some of the best irons I've ever played. There are quite a few sets on Ebay for reasonable money.

I've heard good things about the mp54s but haven't personally tried them. Might offer a little more forgiveness vs the 64s. Maybe worth a try. I know the 53s were forgiving while still giving a tactile and audible feedback when you missed one but not punishing you too bad for it. I haven't tried any of the newer jpx lineup but they should be even more forgiving.

 

As for ball striking, find an individual 6 or 7 iron blade. Take it to the range and practice with it. It will force you to slow down and focus on clean contact. It worked wonders for my iron game.

 

Jimmie, the 54s seem like they might be the most logical option for me or at the very least, a good place to start. I'd like to hit them first and I might be able to get to a store today or tomorrow that has a used set. But your ball-striking comments are exactly why I'm pursuing this. Thank you!

So how do the MP18 SC compare with the 919 Tours, I wonder? Are the Tour heads a tad bigger?

Very true. I found a set of new (in the original box and wrapped in plastic) mp-54s on eBay for well under the budget I set for myself. There's some decent options on Craigs List as well.

Where is the best place to buy shafts? I checked eBay and the only new shafts are purchased through sellers in Japan. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Nope. Especially if you are having a shop build them. Those are more convenience charges for a DIY. Except some will argue about pureing. In my experience I don't swing consistently enough to notice a difference, especially with Nippon tolerances.

30 days later...

 

MP-54s have been re-shafted and are in the bag. I have played a couple of rounds with them and they feel and look great. As anticipated, I seem to have lost some distance from my previous irons (TM RocketBladez)...maybe 7-10 yards per club. I have also noticed a much higher ball flight and, possibly, a higher spin rate. All this is anecdotal of course.

 

Is the distance loss simply from moving from a game improvement iron to a more "traditional" iron? This is not a huge concern for me, but I'm just curious.

Is the higher ball flight a characteristic of these irons or the combination of the shaft and my swing?

The MP's have more traditional lofts, with the 7-Iron being 34 degrees. The Rocketblades (and most game improvement irons) have stronger lofts in addition to extra forgiveness. The 7 Iron from the rocketblades set is 30.5 degrees, so it's actually closer to your current 6-iron. That's the main reason the MP's play shorter, fly higher, and spin more. The extra forgiveness of game improvement irons helps keep distance up on off-centered hits as well.

Thanks SSwanson, thats the type of response I was hoping to hear. Do you know where I could find information on lofts for a variety of makers? I think it's relatively easy for new clubs, but what about older ones?

I do like that aspect as well. Still working out exact distances, but when its on target and close it is immensely satisfying...

I have played both of these. Not much between them. Both top-notch. The SC seemed slightly more forgiving in my hands but the shaft in those also seemed better for me (Modus 120 vs DG S300 in MP64.) If you can play one of these you can play the other.

I love the MP 18 SC's. Go and hit the MB, SC, and MMC and see how you would like to blend a set. With no upcharge for shafts and grips, it is IMO the best deal

For those who are moving forward with the JPX919Tour, are you sticking with the traditional lofts or requesting modern lofts?

 

I went traditional and I haven't second guessed it yet. Played Sunday for first full round with them after a few range outings. Notably, my swing was on for the day, but shot my best round ever of 75, with 3 birds on the 4 par 3's (ranged 135-193). Traditional lofts give me the confidence I will hold the greens.
