Why is no one talking about John Oda?

First off, it’s worth noting that this has been an incredible season for the journeymen and up-and-comers. We saw Joaquin Niemann, the 19-year-old phenom, show us that he was the #1 ranked amateur in the world for a reason. The Chilean earned special temporary status in just five events and went on to secure his PGA Tour card for next season when he finished T-5 at Greenbrier. Similarly, we saw LSU star Sam Burns, who was stubbed from the 2017 Walker Cup team, nearly match Niemann’s feat, ultimately securing his card through the Web.com Tour money list, despite playing a limited schedule.

Then there was TJ Vogel, the former U.S. Am Pub links Champion, who relatively disappeared from the golf scene since turning professional in 2013. Vogel monday qualified for EIGHT events this year! The average qualifying score this season was 65.67. To bring your best stuff eight times under that pressure is remarkable. Unfortunately, he only made three cuts but his $110,000 in earnings makes for a pretty darn good year to most standards.

Then we saw Julian Suri climb over 1,000 spots in the OWGR and contend in majors. JT’s former teammate Scott Strohmeyer finished T-4 in his first event on any PGA sanctioned tour. We saw journeymen Bronson Burgoon and Joel Dahmen go head to head with Tiger while paired with him at his own tournament. And former Big Breaker, Tony Finau, jump to 18th in the world and finish in the top-10 in three of the four majors. The list goes on and on.

However, despite all of the compelling storylines this season, there’s one that seems to go relatively unmentioned. Why is no one talking about John Oda?

The former All-American at UNLV, skipped his senior year to turn professional and nearly played his way to a PGA Tour card with no status entering the year. He finished eighth at Mayakoba in his first PGA Tour event, Monday qualified on four occasions, and finished T-3 at Barracuda after shooting 63 in the qualifier. Most recently, Oda finished T-11 at Wyndham and played his way into the Web.com Tour Finals.

Why isn’t Oda receiving the credit and praise he deserves?

(sorry for the long post!)

It's not a bad year but two one of his better finishes came in an opposite field event, and one of the others (Mayakoba) I don't think has a real high SoF rating. But someone to keep an eye on to see if he can build off of these positive results.

@thirl

You seem to be the same type of golf fan that I am...would much rather talk about some of the under the radar threads than a repeat about the big boys.

Don't know much about Oda, but seems he has potential.

Vogel is an example of how tough it is out there. To Monday qualify for 8 events is great, but 3 checks for 110 k doesn't leave much in the pocket and no status for next year.

The kids has a great swing but I don't see him listed as one the money leaders on the Web.com Tour.

How about that Sungjae Im kid?

Last week's first Web.com playoff event was the first Web.com tournament John Oda ever played in. He missed the cut.

He opened today's tournament with an even par 70.

5’8”. 160...short driver @ 276 average, but, $559k in earnings in 2018. I’d take that!

John Oda is being talked about exactly as much as he should be talked about.

I guess nearly winning and playing your way on tour almost entirely through Monday qualifying in your first pro season doesn't impress like it used to!

I simply thought his play should have garnered more attention than it has.

He turned pro a year ago about a month before Sam Burns. Sam decided to play on the Web.com tour after doing well in some PGA Tour events, won and is now assured of his PGA Tour card for next year as one of the 25. I'm not sure why John didn't play at all on the Web.com tour until last week. Hopefully, John will have some status for 2019 given his good play in a small number of tournaments.

Because John Oda doesn't move the needle.

The OP is a much bigger golf fan than I am. I tend to focus on the top 80 not bottom 80 players. They are all tremendously talented but at the end of the day it is hard for me to care about the Monday qualifiers over the players that contend.

Good to see that someone is watching out for the next wave. Although the next wave are not likely to be guys Monday qualifying and earning their way through WEB.com points. The players that typically rise to the top do so in the manner of Joaquin Niemann.

I loved the circa 62and california lines. Such clean designs. Also when he still used GSS inserts. Those were such high quality and worth the pricetag. Now its just low quality with SC name on it.

I get that some don't like the recent Cameron insert approach, but "low quality" is just fake news. Toulon, Cameron, Betti, etc. are all high quality products.

It’s not fake news when Mr Cameron himself stated, what he produces now is based on having to hit certain price points with Titleist.

The only reason he got pictures taken? Most likely because he was putting with a Cameron putter.
