Winter jacket suggestions

Recommended Posts

There are several remakes of the original. Here is a review thread from the owner of this site with pictures. Mind you, this is from 2010, but mine has held up since then.

The original Windlite may only be able to be found on eBay, or smaller golf shops. Mizuno did come out with the Hayate as well. It's good for medium temps. But, it's no Windlite.

I have a few of the Mizuno sweaters. I actually hardly ever wear them, especially walking, because they’re hotter than balls. I have 2 that are the original type and one of the newer (warma lite?) that is actually wool or wool blend on the outer layer. If you can still find one they’re definitely WARM.

Lately for cold I prefer lightweight windstopper pullover with just a base layer under, & use a vest on top. Take the vest off if it warms up or if I get warm after walking a bit.

That’s what I’ve decided to do, have bought a few layers - a couple of baselayers and a Kjus second skin 1/2 zip so that’s two thin layers if necessary. And a thin cotton roll-neck. Then a GG Dwayne and a Kjus Diamond Fleece for the midlayers, then a GG Lance and a Kjus Dweight for the outside wind stopper layer and a Kjus Dexter and Dorian for wet/wind in my bag. I have the UA padded jacket too if necessary. I also have a Nike Hyperadapt waterproof jacket should it be required and the Kjus Dexter needs a bit of help.

That should suffice for the next 2 or 3 years and cover 2 or 3 rounds per week.

I imagine that’s because you’d look like a knobber wearing one.

Wow, that is horrendous.

Ha ha I will listen for the shouts of “knobber” as I walk up the fairways

I have one in grey, but, it isn't likely you will see me wearing it, since, I lost some weight and, it is a bit big on me. I picked up an Adidas Climaheat Primaloft full zip on sale to replace it.

Really want to try out the ping norse jacket but it seems impossible to find. Anyone know where to get them? The first 3 pages of a google search all seemed sold out.

Last year my wife gave me an electric vest powered by a USB battery in the pocket. For sheer warmth without bulk, it's brilliant. Only wore it a couple of times; when walking I generally work up enough heat, but playing in a group with carts it helped with the sitting. Don't remember the brand, think it was a Japanese company, but I reckon the electric part is what's important.

They are about to start selling again; Last year they were available on the euro sites, ping shop online (which charges outrageous shipping btw- I bought one from there last year that was too big, cost me $15 for shipping on top of the $169 for the jacket, and then another $12 for me to ship back. Then, they lost the return and I had to talk to several different people and email tracking to get credit back. It is not operated by Ping, contracted out to Brand shops I think) and through your local proshop. My local pro got with his ping rep and ordered me one about a week ago

Maybe this year some of the US sites like Budget golf or TGW will have them. None did last year that I could find

Otherwise, order from your course/pro because you probably won't have to pay shipping and if you need to return it they handle everything

For those that bought the Norse last year, I'd also advise watching the sizing this year. Last year the sizing was on a Euro system (you'd wear about a full size larger than you typically do in US based fits), but this year is supposed to be moving to a US based sizing cut like the rest of the apparel did in Spring of this year. Aka, you may wear a full size smaller in this year's Norse family (they are adding styles to the Norse name) than you did last year. I haven't confirmed this with my rep, but was supposed to be in the works for this season to align with the sizing change they made for all other apparel at the beginning of this year.

Something to bear in mind for Euro guys that we need to order a size smaller. I bought a couple of Large Nike tops last year and they were huge, I buy Kjus or GG in Large and they are snug, how they should be, I could’ve got two of me in a Large Nike polo.

Golfbase has the Ping Norse. At least they confirmed my order and haven't indicated it's not available. Maybe the fall stuff is in stock other places now as well.

New Ping Norse jacket has just been released, so there should b no problem now.

I'm not seeing the norse on Google searches still. Just uk based

Kjus radiation jacket

I just picked up on of these on a great deal I found at a ski shop. It's awesome, very comfortable and doesn't restrict the swing at all. I also have a Wolsey Insulator jacket that I wear in colder weather and it's a great piece. Merino wool sleeves and back and I'll wear it with a base layer on cold days and love it. Really high quality construction and materials. Plus it looks classy as all get out.

Europe, but no doubt coming to a store near you very soon. I can’t imagine for a moment that Ping will forget the US market...

Not golf specific, but I just picked this up while Eddie Bauer was having a nice sale.

Padded chest/torso for warmth, lighter arms that wouldn't inhibit swing at all. Haven't tested it out yet, but for the price, I had to give it a shot.

It looks similar to the Ping Barkley. I was looking at it last year, but, I missed out. For me, it between the Ping Barkley and the Adidas Climaheat Primaloft. I went with the Climaheat, since, I was more familar with Adidas sizing (online purchase), and, it was less expensive.

My Ping Norse jacket that I had the local golf course order for me came in today. Looks very nice. Thin but is going to be real warm. Also is pretty slim fitting which I like for swinging a club. I got it in Large and it runs a quite a bit smaller than most US large jackets in the waist/gut area but fits pretty true in the chest and shoulders which I like. Perfect athletic fit and the stomach area isn't going to bulge out when you bend over to swing a club. I would love it if the sleeves were a tad longer but the XL I tried last year was too big.

It is still blazing hot here so it will be a long time before I can test it out

Chris975 was the first in here to proclaim the warmness of last year's Norse. When I first saw and touched the relatively thin jacket, my first thought was that he was crazy. I bought it anyway. The first time I wore it, I was amazed at how such a thin jacket could be so toasty. He was spot on. The only ones I've known who were disappointed with the Norse were guys who unrealistically thought it was gonna like a thick parka in 20 degree weather. It's a jacket that is lightweight, yet warm and toasty on cool, even somewhat cold mornings -- one of the best I've ever used for golf, with the added benefit of being stylish enough to wear off the course.

Is this the Wolsey piece you’re talking about?

When do you use the Kjus Radiation or this? Currently choosing between them.

That's the one yes. I just got the Radiation jacket in this week and haven't had a chance to play in it yet, just put it on and try a few swings in the yard. It is definitely more insulated than the Wolsey but still retains an athletic fit through the mid-section which I like very much. I hate when the mid section bunches up while taking a swing or while you are putting and neither of these jackets have that issue.

With the Wolsey being about half merino wool, I imagine I will wear it in lighter wind conditions between 40* to mid 50*F, and with the Kjus having the DWR treatment I foresee wearing it anytime the wind is blowing and it gets below 50*F or so. The nice thing about the Kjus is that is is pretty versatile and I'll be able to wear it anywhere without it looking too much like a golf specific jacket.

For those looking Stateside, here is where I found the Radiation jacket I just picked up - https://www.basinski.com/shop/kjus/kjus-ski-casualwear/kjus-radiation-jacket-2018/

Can anyone comment on differences in the 3 new ping Norse jackets? Any recommendations between them or which seems best for what? The “zoned” looks like the lightest & stretchiest(is that a word); is that the most like last years? And can anyone verify the sizing as chris mentioned it might be different?

Thanks much guys.

Costco had a Gerry jacket that could do the trick. It is a hybrid style, with more insulation in the body and a stretchy fabric in the sleeves and sides that might work for golf. It does have a hood, so that may be a non-starter for many. It seems to run true to size and fit on the slim side. Best of all it is only $30.
