The surprising Callaway Fusion driver

sfdoddsy

Recommended Posts

The 12 gram weight arrived today so I took the Fusion out on the course tonight for a test run. Definitely the straightest, most forgiving driver I've ever hit. I hit 4 balls off the tee on the same hole - 2 center face, one toe, and one heel. The dispersion was within 5 yards. All 4 we're in the fairway. The center strikes were about 10 yards longer than the others. Definitely a bit shorter than other drivers but worth it for the control. I also think I can eventually get the distance too since I'm so much more comfortable winding up with this club and not worrying about something catostrophic from a mishit.

Do you base the better hits on the 12g weight vs the 5g weight?

I never tried it with the 5 gram weight. With the 12 gram weight which at 44.5 makes it the “heavy” version, it just performs better than other drivers I have at the same length. You can feel when you have an off center hit and expect the ball to slice as it would with another driver but instead it still goes straight just a few yards off center.

Pulled the trigger on this. Could not resist the $125 like new from CPO. Hopefully it will help!

I have the Big Bertha Fusion 3 wood in the stock Recoil stiff shaft and absolutely love, love, LOVE the thing. It's easily my favorite 3 wood I've ever hit. I hit absolute missiles off the tee with it, and am pretty consistently good from the fairway as well (rare for me with fairway woods).

At the same time, I've struggled badly with driver for the last couple years. I finally decided that if I love the 3 wood so much, why not get the Fusion driver as well? I've always liked a slightly shorter driver shaft, so the Fusion Heavy seems like a perfect fit. I found one on eBay in the same stock shaft as the 3 wood. It's arriving today and I can't wait to give it a test at the range.

Also, the very first non-knockoff junk driver I owned was the Callaway FT-iZ driver with the same funky triangular head shape, so this feels like a homecoming for me.

Mine arrives Wednesday, Diamana Red short and heavy. I use my hybrids off the tee.

I'm not a fan of the triangular shape but if it hammers them from the tee then it will be overlooked.

I've been playing mine most of this season and I think I almost have it dialed in.

Mine is 10.5 and I had it set at +1/D for yesterday's round. I recently trimmed 1/2" off the butt and swapped in the 12g weight. All of this was to make the driver play more like my SLDR Mini Driver (43" & 14*). So my Fusion is around 44.5" and 11.5* as of today.

I hit some really nice drives on the course yesterday. The best ones started right down the middle then fell off gently to the left, coming to rest well inside the fairway but 5-6 yards left of my playing partner who was hitting them dead center.

I was afraid I might hit it too high at 11.5* but that wasn't the case. I may try the N setting now that I'm starting the ball online.

I have the Callaway Fusion heavy with the 12 gram weight playing at 9.5 n. Shaft is the stock 450 (r flex). I usually don't play drivers at this low loft but have no problem getting the ball elevated.

Presently, I am torn which driver to use - this one or my Cobra Fly z which I cut down to 44.5 with a 16 gram weight at the 10.5 setting. Shaft is aldila dvs (r flex).

Right now I'm leaning towards the Flyz which is going further with pretty much same dispersion as the Fusion.

Thru this process, I learned an important lesson - the shorter driver is much easier to hit on or near the screws. Only took me almost 30 years to figure this out - I'm a quick learner. :superman2:

I now have my 10.5 Fusion set to +1/N with a 12g weight. Very high and straight flight and I can feel the head throughout the swing which I like.

I'm going to play a round or two like this. Might end up playing stated loft/N.

I'm confused as to why you are concerned about the swingweight scale reading if you are hitting the club well. Maybe a dumb question, but are you playing the standard grip? And isn't some slight variance in swingweight to be expected anyways?

It’s got the stock grip on it. While I’ve hit it well on some shots, it’s not performing as well as I think it should and would if it had the extra weight. Plus I ordered and paid for a club with certain specifications so that’s what I expect to receive. If I wasn’t concerned with the swingweight then I would have just ordered one of the -1 length standard Fusion drivers for $20 less.

My first session with mine was well, a work in progress. I was hitting low bullets with the 9 degree head which I'm ok with - I've historically hit towering high drives with zero roll out so I was wanting to lower the ball flight a bit. Will get outdoors with it tomorrow.

I really like the 44.5" build and the look from address. No issues at all with the headshape or the aesthetics. The WRX crowd overreacted a bit about the looks of this one.

Playing the heavy version with Recoil 450/F3 off and on all season and finally getting it dialed in. I’m a slow swing-speed player and don’t find that the Fusion spins excessively. I’m actually getting nice trajectory and decent roll out. Getting a high percentage of good strikes with the shorter shaft, and finding the fairway. Pretty happy overall.

I played my Fusion today and found out a neat thing about them. Hit it on the toe and the results are not good, but play it center or toward the heel, and it responds quite nicely. After I figured this out I was killing it. Avoid the toe at all costs. I hit some of my best drives today with this club, and last Saturday it was pretty bad, toe hits?

Sweet holy hell. I've been struggling with hitting up on the driver since... well, forever. I finally decided to kind of give up on it by teeing it lower and basically swinging like a 3 wood off the tee with just a little more tilt and hanging back (to try to influence a bit of upward strike).

Anyways, the results were quite good with my Fusion Heavy 9 degree head turned up to 11 degrees. But I knew they could be better as the ball flight was still a bit low. I'm guessing my AoA is slightly negative to neutral, and my SS of about 100 mph is launching it straight but not really THAT long (I was at about 240-250 ish with roll). I decided, what the hell, let's try the 13.5 degree "high trajectory" model and see what happens.

It arrived today for only $80 shipped from CPO's Ebay store. It was so cheap because I got it in the light shaft and the non-heavy version. I switched out the shafts for my stock stiff shaft and put in the 12 gram weight.

Long story short, I cannot believe the balls I was just hitting at the range. Just absolute BOMBS, high and dead straight. I hit a couple that definitely should have had a good deal of slice spin, but I guess because of the loft the slice was just a manageable fade. I hit one high off the face - it went a mile in the air, but it still traveled a respectable distance and went straight. If that's my miss now, so be it. But for the most part my strikes were right in the middle of the clubface.

The short shaft plus high loft might be exactly what I need. Hopefully this high I'm riding isn't dashed on Sunday morning because I've honestly never hit range balls like I just did.

Ive moved on from mine but have kept it as a backup. I would recommend the Fusion to nearly anyone. It’s a great driver. Those high toe strikes typically resulted in long high draws. Sometimes I’d over due it but mostly high draws.

I finally got the correct club from CPO after they shipped a third to me overnight. I calculated that they spent over $100 on shipping sending all of these clubs back and forth. I told the rep on the phone that they should probably have better quality control in the warehouse to save money from situations like these.

I just want to mention that I absolutely love this thing. I'm playing the 13.5 degree head in the Heavy set up and absolutely murdering the ball off the tee. It might be odd for a 32-year old with a SS around 100 mph to be playing what most would consider an "old man" driver head, but it works for my swing. I'm hitting nice and high draws and, most importantly, hitting the middle of the club face more often than not. Driving the ball is fun again!

One of the most consistent players ive ever played with had a nike SQ in 13 degree in senior flex that he crushed. He easily swings 105
