Classic or vintage WITB

Recommended Posts

I’ve been searching far and wide to figure out where I can view some old WITB pictures.. in fact it’s half the reason I joined! It seems the pics are limited unless I’m missing something (I am new) but I am talking about when I was young I was lucky enough to have a dad who received golf digest and I would save all of them once he was done. I remember there was great WITB photos and they were all throughout the 90s, I specifically remember an issue with Payne Stewart but cannot find these pictures no matter how hard I look. I’m now kicking myself for not saving my stacks of magazines!! I won’t stop til I find them and if you help me just know you’ll be my hero as I’ve been searching the web for years and have only come up with the fact that I may need to buy some old issues of golf digest of eBay. I’d rather not so please if you have any info regarding where a person can view some 90s and even early 2000s witb pictures I will be forever grateful.

Go over to the Classic Golf and Golfers section of WRX and post this. A lot of the guys have the old magazines and will be happy to post what you wanted. A lot of them are real good on computer research and can maybe pull it up from the archives

BTW even though I am a Southern born and raised guy I know what "da yoop" is as in the UP of Michigan. We have several fine WRXers from that neck of the woods over in the Classic forum. I have also been up there many times as a truck driver--- You guys are as big of rednecks as we are down South and I say that in a good way.

I have been slacking on checking my posts.. I wish I had noticed this sooner! Rednecks for sure!! Haha! That’s great you say that and it means you have definitely spent enough time up here to know what it’s all about, there’s rednecks and hillbillies running rampant in my hometown of Ironwood which as a trucker you almost definitely have been through since US2 runs right trough it. Hunting season might as well be a national holiday far as us yoopers are concerned so yes you hit the nail on the head there we are one in the same haha. Thanks for the help BigStu always much appreciated!

OMG had a friend of mine from Ironwood so I know exactly where it is--- In fact went up there one time with him to visit relatives and we went up to a Bar in Hurley WI called the Crash In seems it got it's name because some guy got plastered and crashed his motorcycle through the front window

Wow what a small world indeed, the crash!! Haha all I can say is wow.. I’m in disbelief, it’s so crazy you’ve been there and went out to the original sin city of Hurley! Used to be quite the place way back when, both towns have declined since the last mine closed in the 90s There’s still some good times to be had in Hurley though, used to be 100 bars on silver street in its heyday. If you ever get up there again look into playing the Gogebic Country Club, conditions are different than most courses because of the short season and lack of funds but it’s quite affordable and is a unique challenge for sure. I don’t run into anyone who knows much about where I’m from so I get a real kick outta hearing that you’ve been up there.. Say yah to da UP eh!!

Ironwood? Might as well be in Wisconsin. Bunch of "Finish Rednecks" and "Cheese Heads" up that way. (JK). Have spent time in the distant past at a camp on Lake Gogebic (Merriweather, although we always called it Bergland). Hunting, fishing, hiking along the Presque Isle, trout fishing the Ontonagon. Running amok. For several years in the fall, four of us would make a "Loop of the Yoop" trip. No golf clubs, we weren't golfers. We were sportsmen. Fishing tackle and guns were the sporting goods implements of choice. Pat hunting in the morning, walleye fishing on Gogebic in the afternoon. Good times.

Been to Hurley. Once. Someone thought it was a bright idea to have two "last calls" in the same night. Don't remember anything about it. Wonder if the Hoop'n Holler Bar is still there? On the shore of Gogebic. (The google says Ya', fer sure.)

The western UP is so entirely different from down here in Troll'land. Hard to believe that it's the same state. Few know anything about it. A mere 543 miles from our home base.

All this has absolutely nothing to do with your original request. On topic. Wish I could help. All I can offer is what Stu suggests. Many a vintage authority in classics that may be able to help. Plus, google searches. Found a PS WITB awhile back, but can't seem to locate it now. Anyhow. The season is drawing closer.

Ha HA went up there another time but can not recall the town. Another friend of mine was a Owner Operator trucker and talked me into going up there to Moose hunt with him. Drove my 78 Corvette from Rock Hill SC to there. Almost froze my arse off!!! Never saw a Moose but consumed vast quantities of the exact thing you have pictured there. LOL what a trip started back to SC got caught in snow in Chicago. Bought 2 steel studded snow tires and rims to put on the Vette. Came home ok. Of course my bud and I got to spinning those snow tires throwing sparks on the dry roads around the house. Ended up cracking the fiberglass over the wheel wells and blistering the paint. OHHH had to get the damage repaired and the whole car repainted about 3k worth in those days (around 84 or so) Expensive but ohhh so much fun!!! But back in those days that was how I rolled did not give two hoots. Stuff like that is why I don't have much money now--- Do I regret it? HELL NO!!!! I had fun and if I had it to do over that is exactly how I would roll!!!
