Is Abraham Ancer eligible to play for U.S. in Ryder/Presidents Cup?

I’m not sure exactly what the criteria are. The announcers during this weekend’s tournament have mentioned that he was born in McAllen, Texas and that he holds both U.S. and Mexican citizenship. However, his name plate on the back of his caddy’s bib has a Mexican flag on it. Is there some sort of process that determines an order of primacy with respect to dual citizens?

I think as far as dual citizenship goes, you can choose whichever country you want to compete for - but usually once you have competed under one flag, you are disbarred from representing another country.

This may be utter nonsense, but lets start this ball rolling!

Why does it have to be the Americans against the World? Can't we have a North American Team?

because the US is really struggling to win a presidents cup and needs a bigger choice of players to choose from?

No. Because golf is so worldwide now we don’t need to give the Brits(international) any more breaks. Maybe we could turn it into a competition of hemispheres? How about the Western vs Eastern? What a mess that would be? Fun though. No I would go for teams based on world rankings. They split players on a team like the seeded tourneys in tennis or something. Guys would get a chance to be teamed with everyone. This whole idea of national pride is meaningless when only the US is a national team.

It's not meaningless to the U.S. organizations that put on the events or the U.S. fans - that's why they work and make millions for the organizations and, as to Ryder Cup, provide essential support to the Euro Tour.

Well sure. Here I go again trying to reason, see this as strictly a fun competition, yet forgetting it’s core is the almighty dollar.

The Ryder Cup is pretty much as popular and as successful as you could make any golf team competition.

The reason that the US as a country plays against continents or the rest of the world (this always comes up when US lose - "how can we compete with a continent"), is that there are as many people playing golf in the USA as the rest of the world combined essentially. There are several times more golfers in the US than Europe. 45% of the world's golf courses are in the USA.

Europe has areas which have no interest in golf and countries with populations of 40-50 million that have 2-3 courses in the whole country. The game just doesn't register outside of 7-8 countries.

Someone named Abraham should always be eligible to play for the US as a general rule

Well that depends. We can’t get political so will leave it at that. Good point though.

Oh I'm completely party neutral, if you have the same weird first name as a former president....you're in. Republican or democrat

Somewhere there may be an Irish golfer named Barack O'Rourke, or a Swedish golfer named Grover Carlson. Both those dudes are in

Pretty much this. Until golf in China or India takes off, then US golf is de facto the pinnacle of golf (well, apart from your fans).

The Ryder Cup is one of the greatest team sporting events in sport, why you would want to dilute it by having some no doubt corporate sponsored seeded teams I have no idea. Watching the Nike Nickerbocks vs the Callaway Calledonians would be dull as.

The fact that it generates much needed income for the European Tour and generates interest in the non golfing fan is also a much needed benefit.

Why? Just curious.

I think we need to do it for goodwill towards our neighbors.

That's why we have Presidents Cup!

And although I love all things Canada, they aren't getting any concessions from me until they allow us to bring back more than just 4 measly walleyes!

My sarcasm meter just pegged, however I think you actually mean it. Interesting opinion. My opinion is that players from Mexico or Canada would perform much better on an RoW team than a North America team.

100% agree, but I was interested to see if anyone understood the impact of dual citizenship.

To be Olympic eligible you must declare a country and meet qualification standards. Is this the same scenario?
