Driver decision given cost difference - Cobra F8 vs G400 vs G400 max

I’m planning to order a driver at 44”. Down to Cobra F8 vs Ping G400. Looking for forgiveness off the tee. Cobra driver is approx $170$ cheaper.

 

Anyone play/tried both? Is the G400 worth paying $170 more???

... I think you are basically looking at personal preference as both drivers are very, very good. Personally I have never liked the sound/feel/look of the current Ping turbulator spiderman series so I play the F8. Amazingly forgiving with lower spin than I expected. In fact I started out with the F8+ but the F8 spun just a hair more and is much more forgiving, at least for my swing. I hit them both the F8's and G400's at the Show Demo Day and enjoyed their performance but at $170 less for the F8, I think it is a no brainer. Especially since you can order a bunch of different upgrade shafts at zero cost including Rogue Silver ($120), HZRDUS Black Yellow and Red ($72, no Red) , Even Flow Blue ($72) and Tensei CK Blue ($90) to name a few with Ping upgrade cost in ($) .

G400 will hold it's value a lot better.

Not sure where you’re getting the $170 difference. After the annual Cobra price drop, F8 is now $299 & G400 is still at $399. Is it G Max at $469?

Anyway, I’ve played Cobra drivers almost exclusively since 2012. About 8 different drivers, just cycling through and not seeing much different. So I wasn’t feeling the F8/F8+, couldn’t demo with the shafts I preferred, then had a poor run with the LTD yesterday.

So I went and demoed the G400, got great numbers in the stock Alta CB, put the LTD on consignment, and ordered the G400. Done. The salesman I’ve known for a while who took my order knew the price + tax from memory. That’s how many they’ve sold. Also said none of them have come back.

You could also wait 6 months, when Ping comes out with its next woods line and the G400 price drops. Or get a new G now for $250.

OP, go get fit. With the right shaft/head combo, G400/Max is hard to beat. If you get the same numbers with the F8, save some $$$ and go with that one. F8 is another great driver. Lots of shafts to pick from too. F8 is also more adjustable vs. Ping, if that is what you are looking for!? ;)

Used F8/F8+ are going for ridiculously cheap on BST and are a fantastic sounding and performing club. After hitting most every 18 driver, including the LST, the Cobra is what I game. The g400 is also a great driver; have it in the backup bag. That being said, go get fit as others have said. I was surprised by the cobra but need to make sure it’s for you.

Both are great heads. I got a fitting, and the numbers were almost identical for the F8 and the G400 Max. Close enough that I went for the one that looked best to me. I would have been fine with either choice. If you are really finding a $170 price difference, well, that would be an easy decision for me.

Simple answer is, no it's not worth it. Unless it is.

 

If you don't get along with the F8, you'll buy the G400 anyhow, and then you really overspent. Go try them, get numbers, get how it FEELS, and understand that for the most part, they'll perform similarly.

 

But they won't feel the same. You'll like one more, and that's the one you go with.

I do get the merits of getting fit. My only issue is the cost of the fitting plus the build of the driver with the (likely) exotic shaft can get steep very fast. I’ve tinkered a bit so have a general feel for what works. Plus it’s more fun to trial and error myself :)

 

That being said, I’m leaning towards an F8 tour length driver with one of the hazardous shafts for no cost extra. Lots of Labor Day promos that apply to cobra and not to ping

Think of the money you lost and shots that you left on the course. Go get fit. Driver fitting is like what $100? Club champion fitted me with a shaft that cost only $160 and in the end I gained about 20 yards or more. We even kept the same LTD head new shaft, new loft that's it.

Get fitted first and make an educated decision. Ping G400 Max is a really good choice but you have to determine if it's for you.

I'm on my 3rd driver purchase this season and haven't hit any as good as my 10 year old DCT. Go get fit...I should have.
