Private club with close proximity to Boston

Hey guys,

 

I moved to Boston about a year and a half ago from NYC. I've made the rounds playing some great (and not so great) public courses in the area. That being said, my wife and I are 32 with our first little one on the way, so would love to have country club for the social aspect. I'm currently looking at Framingham CC, Nashawtuc, Oakley CC, Cape Club of Sharon to name a few. Our connections are limited since we're somewhat new to the area.

 

Am I missing any affordable options in the area?

There are actually quite a lot beyond the usual suspects, but it depends on what you mean by "Boston" - the answer is very different if you're in Canton vs. Danvers vs. Wayland.

Like Raynorfan said, your location is a huge deal. You don't want to be far enough from the club that it's enough of an inconvenience to get there that it limits your play. We (my wife and I) are members at Halifax, it's a fantastic course, probably the best deal for a private in the state (and even better with the deals going right now, register for 2019 get the rest of this year free, 20% discount with referral from a member), and it's a great group of people. It has absolutely become the center of our social lives, and we've made a ton of good friends in the year we've been members.

 

That being said, if you're 30-40 minutes away, I'd never recommend it. When we were recently looking for a new home, one of our criteria was that we didn't want to be any more than 15 minutes from the club, maybe 20 for the perfect property at a great price. We wound up 3 minutes away, and we're loving every minute of it.

If you're currently living in the city you might want to wait till you guys head to the "burbs" and then decide. If you're set on staying for a while - you may find it awfully inconvenient to travel to and from any private club due to traffic, newborns, etc etc. That said - Oakley and Wollaston may be your closest - but expect $15K+ initiation I think.

Thanks guys. We are in Boston in Beacon Hill, so I'm OK accepting a bit of a drive before we get anywhere. I'm very jealous of that 3 minute commute to your club.

 

We're most likely in Boston for the next year at least.

Depends on your definition of affordable, but Wollaston is expensive, in my opinion, even under 35.

And before bonds, food minimums and just general cash to properly enjoy your time at any club (tournaments, gambling, caddies, etc).
