Would you join a "Just Golf " course.

1. Would you join a course that is just golf? No pool, tennis, fine dining, gym . It may have a snack bar. Golf course is great and dues are moderate say $2000 a year.

2. Would you join a course that allows you only to play golf at certain times say after 1 . No real club house privledges. Course is outstanding and national ranked. Dues in the $3000 + range.

3.Could you sell this to your wife?

I'm in a constant search for #1, so that's a big yes. I have no interest whatsoever in any country club amenities. Just give me the course and maybe a place I can buy a hot dog.

At this point in my life I would love to have a course like that nearby. Pay one fee and play almost whenever you want without the fancy clubhouse and all the "crap" that goes with it (i.e. dining minimums, dress codes, blah blah). All i really want is a good track with maybe a bar so I can have a beer when im done. A range would be nice but it wouldn't be a breaking point.

Absolutely, in fact I'd prefer that.

I was going to say option one sounded great, then I started thinking about all the little things I like about my CC other than the golf course. I spend a lot of time practicing, so does option one include driving range and putting green. What about a short game area with sand bunkers and deep rough to practice chips / pitches from. Does option one include a tournament comity and regular organized tournaments? What about handicap monitoring and regulating? Our tournament prizes are pro shop credit, so I like a well stocked proshop. Our proshop does enough business to organize demo days from the major suppliers with free fittings. Our 19th hole has several large TV's and better than average bar food, so lunch after the round while watching the football game is part of my Sunday recreation. Our banquette hall does weekly special dinners that are fantastic and there are a lot of special brunches, Easter, Mothers Day, New Years, etc. Having a locker room with showers means I can squeeze in a early round and still make that noon wedding I didn't want to go to, or get a late nine right after work. If my round gets rained out, there is always the card room. Shoe attendant, bag storage, the list goes on. I guess if option one is just a parking lot and 18 hole golf course, I'm going to have to pass.

Option #1 is what I have, and I hope it doesn't change. Like Bluefishercat, my dues are less than 1/2 that. I dont need all the extra

CC junk. A course, well maintained, beautiful greens, group of 4 normal round less than 3:45,and we all love it.

Would I?

I did. The course is magnificent and always in great shape. The practice facility is top-notch. The staff is polite, professional, and friendly. No pool. No tennis courts. No restaurant. And...no clubhouse. The pro shop is a double-wide trailer that also houses a snack bar (which is open sometimes). I love it.

The current club I'm at has fine dining, lounge, fancy locker room and banquet hall, etc... but I really only use the practice facility and golf course. Only eat in the lounge a few times a year now, and would be just as happy eating elsewhere.

Currently the after 1pm wouldn't work for me, as I have a newish baby at home and the best time for me to golf is early in the morning while she's still sleeping. This metric is very YMMV though.

RE: wife, she doesn't care as long as it doesn't impact her quality of life. I recently requested a membership packet from another club down the road from my current one that will cost about $65k to join (not equity, just initiation)... that was the only time she thought it was a bit much, but since I can't justify it either, it's a non issue.

Yup. I don't even know where my locker is. We can go eat anywhere. We have a pool and tennis court at my club, I've seen them with my own eyes, never considered going to either.

I would think all of the focus going towards the course only would be a positive.

That said, I don't have kids and my wife may feel differently. Tho, if the cost was substantially lower, I think she'd get on board.

I always thought I wanted just #1 (just a golf membership, none of the extras). And for the last 3 years I that's kinda what I had. But 2 weeks ago I just got approved for, and joined a fully private club with all the amenities.

So far, I am loving it! The wife and I went for our first dinner there last week, and the food was fantastic. The drink pours were very generous. The staff is great, they are go-getters that really take care of you. I love the locker room. Being able to leave my shoes out, and an attendant will shine them up and replace any worn spikes is pretty cool. Bag and push cart storage is convenient. No more getting setup in the parking lot.

I've only played 3 rounds thus far, but pace of play has been as fast as 2:45, and as slow as 3:30. At my previous club (semi-private), most rounds were at least 4 hours, often more towards 4:30. There are no tee times at the new club either. I kinda like that I don't have to screw around with making tee times.

I'm only a couple weeks into the membership, so I may be experiencing the euphoria of something new, but I think there's a lot of value in some of the other things a club can offer. If you had asked me this a year or two ago, maybe I wouldn't have given you the same answer.

Good golf course, good practice facility, good snack bar.

Membership requires passing a practical and written test. Nobody plays without passing the test (including wives and kids). Real marshals, who can enforce a modest pace of play. No speed demons, nor slow pokes. :)

No pool, no fancy clubhouse, no tennis courts, or any other fluff. Just hard-core golf.

Anyone want to build one in the Tucson area? :)

1. I would absolutely join such a facility. Unfortunately one never existed in the area I've spent the bulk of my adult life in so far. I hardly ever exceeded the monthly food minimum at my clubs. I prefer either home cooked meals or a couple of specialty restaurants in town that are not part of a club. I don't play tennis and have been in a pool anywhere no more than twice in the last 10 years. A room I can change clothes in after work before golf and maybe take a shower after golf is all the clubhouse I want; you can fit that in a doublewide trailer. Edit: the club would still need to have a limited number of members and a good golf-centric culture.

2. Yes, if that $3,000 were considerably cheaper than the unrestricted tee time membership, and I was assured that they were not clogging up the after 1pm times with slow pokes like unaccompanied guests, school matches, corporate outings, etc. that they didn't want interfering with prime time.

3. My wife only ever really came to the full-service CC's I was a member at to help me kill off the monthly food minimum. Maybe went to the pool 2-3x per season. She knows I will play a ton of golf somewhere no matter what, and it's my money spent on it, so she doesn't care where I join or play. If I get a season pass to a muni or a full membership at Merion it makes no difference to her.

All depends on the golf clubs culture, how many good golfers the club has and if they have inter-club team golf. My 12 index wife plays lots of golf too so that the club would need an active women's group as well as a restaurant and grill. The reasons we'd join a Country Club are the same, culture except for tennis and pool for the family.

Edit.. my apologies, I must have overlooked the time restriction item. That will be a total deal-breaker for me because if I'm going to join a club I'm going to want to play first thing in the morning and get the round done with for the day. I would pass on this deal personally.

$3000 and is nationally ranked?

I would pay for that everyday and twice on Sunday

#1 all day, I would join a club like this but the one here is male only. The pool and tennis is useless for me.

#2 no way time restrictions are the worst. Ranked or not there are plenty of nice clubs. Upside is you could get into a ton of courses the other clubs might not be able to get you in.

#3 Im not married.

$65,000 initiation fee and NON- equity?? I have to ask, where do they get away with this?
