Dont Total the Card on the 18th Tee

Now I say this as its probably best to avoid doing this if you are typing not to jinx having your best round by realizing its within grasp....

I will start by saying I suck, and am getting less sucky ever so slowly. I play my university (Rutgers) course the most, so my scores there are a good measure of my improvement. I know I cant come on this board and brag about finally breaking 90 as for most thats no great accomplishment. For me, I was almost there yesterday!! My best score to date is a 91 (also at the RU course) and I find myself standing on the 18th tee box sitting at 83. Just a pond and 496yrds in front of me and breaking 90 is just a bogey away!

I rarely hit driver and prefer long irons from the tee, but the driver was doing ok today so I figured I would go for it. I normally hit a little right so I take aim at the fairway bunker on the left and fire.... we all know exactly where it went, dead straight into the bunker! the sand was hard and wet so my ball rolled all the way to the front edge, nothing to do but punch out to the fairway. 4i was next but that sailed to the right, under a tree. More scrambling and a good pitch got me close but I still closed out with a double bogey and a score of 90.......

A 90 is still my best round to date but an 88 or 89 would have been sweeter. my previous 91 was actually on shorter tee than I played yesterday, so my one stroke difference was a bit better too. Anyway, maybe if I didnt total my card one hole too early I wouldn't have psyched myself out....

Congrats on the new personal best. I've been there in rounds too, that's why I no longer total my score at all until after the round.

I read the title wrong and thought you were referring to when people sit in their carts next to the 18th green tabulating their scores. My partner does this and it drives me nuts. I hate hitting into a green when there's a cart sitting next to it.

Was playing a par 62 short course and sitting at -1 for the day. Final hole was 300 yard par 4. Hit OK drive to fairway. Wedge into green but water on the right. I hit a fader headed for the edge of the water, take s a luck bounce and I end up on the fringe. 2-putt for par. Finish -1!!! Woohoo!! That was years ago....

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

Ive been in that exact position 4 times before I broke 90. The last time I tallied my score on my third shot. I knew I was close and knew this would be the chance to break 90. So i had to hit a certain club and it worked. 2 putted and went home. shot 89. Then shot 89 again on the Old Course the following month.

This was me on my first attempt at breaking 80 (still haven't). Sitting on the 17th tee at 70 strokes. Need a bogey and a par (Par 5, then Par 3). HIt a good drive, hit a GREAT 2nd shot......wedge into the green hits the worst possible landing area and shoots off to the left unplayable. Scramble and end up with an 8 on the par 5

I parred the 18th to make out with 81. My next 5 rounds were in the 90s lol

I think you're wrong with your assumption. This is exactly the board you can come too..

Everyone reading this remembers their first sub 100, 90, 80 and for a few, sub 70 rounds... (guess who chipped in for a 68 just once...)

We played a course yesterday and when we stood on the 18th tee I (proudly) told the boys "this is the course where I first broke 100".

When you do break 90, and it sounds like it's gonna happen soon, come back to this thread and scream it in ALL CAPS.

Because it is (or soon will be) a "great accomplishment".

And oh yeah, don't add that crap up early!

Sounds like the makings of a good Kenny Rogers song.

You've got to know when to go for it

Know when to lay up

Know when to walk away

And know when to run

You never count your strokes

When you're sittin' on the 18th tee

There'll be time enough for countin'

When the golfins' done

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

I really wish I could go back and remember breaking 120, 110, 100, 90 and 80. Having played so many rounds of golf and having broken those barriers so long ago those memories got pushed out. The only 1 I can remember is the sub 70 round because I have only done it once. Besides remembering I went Bogey on 17 and Bogey on 18 to finish I don't remember much else. It was easy to know where I was at because I played so consistently that day. I can look at the scorecard I scanned in and see the hole by hole breakdown but can't recall more than a shot or two.

But yeah. If anyone breaks a number for the first time and are excited about it please share. Most will be happy for you even in this space.

Thanks for all the comments! The funny thing is I shot my personal best after not swinging a club for over two weeks due to the weather, had zero practice swings or putts because I was late for my tee time and I decided to play harder tees (second from the tips) than usual. I checked in and ran to the first tee!

I remember my first time breaking 100 as well. I realized I had a chance on the 16th tee with a par 3, 5 and 4 for the finishing 3 holes. Made 3 pars in a row to shoot a 97.

Funny how 90 sucks, but 89 is great. :taunt:

One day you will taste the sweet nectar of a round in the 80's and frankly yes 89 does feel much better 90. It will be the same thing when you get 79 and 80, then hopefully you will get below par vs par and then the very cool 69 v 70.

Don't know anyone who has shot in the 50's but I am sure 59 is light year's better than 60.

Embrace the mental side. You aren't going to "jinx" anything.

I just about always know where I'm at in relation to par. If you're going to set a personal best, you're either going to do it, or you aren't.

If you get comfortable knowing your score all the time, you may not care as much what the end result is.

I agree with rawdog (can't count how many times I've said that). But seriously I don't even know how to not keep track of score in my head anymore. It may suck knowing your score and falling short, but eventually you'll hit the goal and it'll feel 10x better draining that putt than not knowing until you get to the parking lot.

I didn't think about it that way, but I like that thought.

In the path of improvement you bounce up and down on a trendline. I know it's tough, but I've taught myself not to live or die by any one round or outcome. So teaching yourself to keep track of score in your head becomes natural, normal, routine. And when that day comes that you break 90, 80, 70, it'll just be routine that you already know the score. And if you're trending in the right direction, it'll eventually happen, regardless of it you're aware of it or not.

Basically, knowing the score only becomes an issue when you let it.

Same position trying to break 80 for the first time. Stood on the par 5 18th sitting on 73. Bogey gets me 79. And mind you, this is a legitimate birdie chance and a hole I'd birdied at least 3x in the year. Take a 4i off the tee as I'd been hitting it well all day. Pull it left. OK, birdie is probably out now, but par is in play. Go to punch out and top it. Hadn't topped one all day. Long story short, I doubled the hole for an 80.

The mental game is real.

Yup. I do that if I'm by myself. If I'm playing with a buddy I get him to keep my score. The more I just play without thinking about numbers, the better I do..........usually haha
