short course fix?

my local course is 9 holes and 3k yards. It is a really nice course. I use driver on 6 holes and I have thinking about using an Iron to drive that is 100 yards less than driver to effectively add 600 yards to the course. It would equal around a 7200 course in length in respect to approach shots.

 

Does anyone do this on short courses?

I don't, I play various courses, no home course. I think you should do it more just to change things up and all.

The 9 hole course we were a member of in HS had different tees for each 9. Not a whole lot of difference for most holes but there was one that went from a par 4 to a par 5. Distance was the main goal so we never had the luxury of purposely shortening our tee shots. Part of that is the course is a classic setup with plenty of distance variety to begin with. If I were in your situation I would certainly mix it up like you suggesr. Sounds like fun.

 

But I wouldn’t put much stock in your final score as you would never play this way. But it’s a great way to practice the longer approach game.

It sounds like you're complicating the issue. My solution which is also my form of iron practice (I seldom practice anymore) is to play all courses under 6k using irons; leaving driver and 3wd in the bag.

For under 5500 yards, another way is to pick "one" mid or long iron, and PW, SW, and LW and putter. The aforementioned puts a premium on making sure whichever club is chosen to use off the tee; I had better nut it as well as the second club and so on. It's a lot of fun. :beach:

I can't do it, but it would be an easy way to effectively lengthen the course. Good practice for your longer clubs.

My home course is short too and I just play extra balls with irons or hybrids off the tee on some holes or drop balls at random spots in the fairway/rough depending on what I feel like doing. There are quite a few par fours where my scoring average with a hybrid off the tee probably isn’t much different than when I hit my driver.

Sometimes on a short course I'll play driver off the tee, then drop a ball at whatever distance from the green I want to play to "simulate" a longer course and pick up the driver ball along the way (or play it as well for extra practice if the course is relatively empty).

A variation of that could be tee off with driver or 3 wood. Then drop a ball 50 yards directly behind in the same landing situation. Ex: driver hit in left rough equals drop 50 yards back in rough. Thiscway you still have to hit full tee shots and they influence your longer approach shots.

Unless you're shooting 4 under using driver, I'd keep hitting driver and not worry about trying to lengthen the course any. It's good mental practice to get used to going low.
