What are the top 5 courses you've played?

Recommended Posts

Top 5 (in order).

1. Pebble

2. Old Course

3. Pacific Dunes

4. Kingsbarns

5. Spyglass

Most overrated:

PGA Stadium Scottsdale.

Most of the PGA / TPC courses? Overrated.

I said most. Some old (and getting older) facilities trying to pass as top cabin and

command green fees that are, shall we say, not a great value.

No order:

..

Milwaukee CC

..

Biggest letdown:

Brown Deer Park

Milwaukee CC? Really? Just surprising, but a very nice private. Of course, in a sea of nice privates in the area (Bluemound CC, West Bend CC, et cetera).

I played it last year in the Mid-Am and it was in perfect shape. I really enjoyed it and thought the layout was fantastic. Brown Deer was a fine course, but I expected much more from a PGA Tour course and was letdown. Lots of great golf courses in WI though.

My top 5:

1. LA Country Club North- born & raised in LA Co. so you just keep asking yourself "am i really in the heart of the city here?"

2. Torrey Pines So. (I have a boat in Mission Bay so I get res. ID card & play for 58.00)

3. Princeville, Kauai-Views are 2nd to none

4. Wasatch Mountain course, Heber City Utah- A County course w/40.00 green fees! An amazing course cut into the back side of the mountains east of Salt Lake City. If you ever have a long layover in SLC, rent a car and go & it will make your list too.

5. Wolf Creek, Mesquite Nevada. The natural reserve/hazard is where ProV1s go to die

Honorable Mention: Rio Secco, Lake Las Vegas Resort,-Henderson Nevada, Golf Resort @ Indian Wells Challenge course,

La Quinta Mountain Course. Primm Lakes course. Poipu Bay, Kapalua-Plantation

Most overrated:

Trump National, Palos Verdes- Amazing Ocean Views on a bad golf course. The Donald must've paid someone off at Golf Digest to get in the top 100. I am glad my round was comped

Pelican Hill, Newport Coast. Another good view bad course way too much money

Fly to Salt Lake, rent a car and play Wasatch 4 times over 2 days and it will cost you less than it did to pay either of the above courses.

Pine Valley

Muirfield Village

Tidewater

Firestone

OSU Scarlet Course

Not in that particular order. And I am a Buckeye so i do have some bias with the last one. But, it does host a Nationwide tour event and is usually the highest scoring average of the season on that tour. Plus, it's usually in immaculate shape and it's a beast.

Fun topic. I'm going to throw a couple on here that haven't been listed.

1. Turnberry - Ailsa

2. Southern Hills - Tulsa, OK

3. St. Andrew's Old Course

4. The Reserve - Indian Wells, CA

5. Pinehurst #2

For me, it is impossible to seperate a course's history, character, and my experience there from the actual course itself. I recognize that St. Andrew's wouldn't be particularly special if it had been built 50 years ago, but it's much older, has incredible history, and I had a very memorable day there with my grandfather.

Pinehurst #2 is similar to me. I understand why some people migth consider it over rated, but the experience I had playing it was excellent.

Tulsa probably isn't a place too many people would go out of there way to visit, but Southern Hills is truly an excellent course. I'm lucky enough to have family who are members there and have played it several times.

The Reserve will probably never receive any significant attention from the general golfing public, being a private golf community geared primarily towards retirees, but I've played it almost every year for the last 10 years with my grandparents out there and there is no course that I enjoy playing on a consistent basis more than that course. Beatuiful setting, always pristine condition, and lots of fun shots.

Overated courses

Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes - going along with what I said before, I was out there and didn't play very well and while I was there a close family member passed away, which almost definitely tainted the experience. Still, compared to some of the excellent courses I played on my Scotland trip, I didn't think Bandon measured up.

Royal Troon was the most overrated course I played while in Scotland. There was just nothing that impressed me. I enjoyed it to some extent due to the Open history there, but the course itself did nothing for me.

Honorable Mention

I really enjoyed Chambers Bay. Give it a few more years to mature and it will be really amazing. I found it much more enjoyable than the Bandon courses.

First, I'm new and I'm totally amazed at how many of you have played Pine Valley and Cypress Point. I thought these two cathedrals of golf were UBER private? Anyone want to give me the secret on how to get on? Anyway, my top 5:

Medinah Country Club Course #3
Rich Harvest Farms
Whistling Straits- Straits
Erin Hills
Cog Hill Dubsdread

H.M.

I'm really surprised at how many of you have played these super private courses -- e.g., Pine Valley, Cypress, etc.

I don't play much, and when I do I play mostly inexpensive courses, but here are my five in no particular order:

Arcadia Bluffs
Kingsley Club
Bryan Park Champions Course
Harbour Town
Golden Horseshoe Gold Course

Not exactly world class, but great courses.
