Wedge choice? Ping SS to ES?

Recommended Posts

Anyone gone from Glide SS grind to ES grind in a SW or LW? I just did not get along with the SS in either loft. Fat, chunks, skulls...total basket case. Recently tried RTX-3 CB in a V-FG (lots of bounce) and got along much better especially from the fairways and tight lies. I recently went with the i210s in Retro (with a 52* U wedge) so I'm looking for a 57-58* S/L wedge to finish the bottom of the bag.

Might go grab another RTX-3 CB in a 58* but thought I'd run it passed the board for opinions. Thanks.

Sounds as if you're not getting sufficiently shallow.

I play 56 ES and 60 SS - the ES has 8 of bounce but the Eye Grind, which is a bit wide, is famous for bunker play. The 60 SS has a nice heel grind.

I use a Stan Utley technique from 40 yrds and in, and out of bunkers. Really helped. If you want, youtube Stan Utley on chips, pitches, bunker - saved my short game.

If you like bounce, try the WS Glide 2.0? ;)

Thanks...after doing a little research last night I realized that might be a good option. In my area there is no where to test anything so the only way to try is to buy. Thanks.

Funny...Stan grew up an hour from me. I am definitely steep, especially from 10-50 yards. After hitting a couple chunky I start over thinking and the next thing I'm firing one off the back of the green. Its a confidence issue (or lack of in this case). I've done better with more bounce in the past even off tight lies. Never been a great wedge player but always managed to work my way around missed greens. This year has been a struggle. Thanks for the tips.

Yep, Stan has you moving the clubhead more and not your arms - so your right elbow remains closer to your side, and then you turn, turn on that lead foot on the downswing instead of using your arms - that eliminates a lot of steepness. The arms just fall while remaining on your body - as I said, saved my short game. Holed a Lob from below the green last round with the 60 SS, sand game improved, chipping is solid. It only took a lot of youtube re-watching of Stan, and a few sessions on the range, and then repetition. Good luck.

Buy an old Eye 2 57.5* SW....just play around with it, practice some.

Then those WS or ES will be a strength...

I prefer the ES in sand, where 90% of my usage is
