Help "blend" my bag

BabyFades

Recommended Posts

Over time have accumulated a lot of clubs I love, but have a few qns and thought I'd poll the brain trust here

Here is WITB:

Driver: Taylormade 2016 M2 10.5', GD AD-DI 6s Stiff Shaft

5 Wood: Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 19' Stock Stiff Shaft

3 iron: Ping G5 Stock Stiff Shaft

4-GW: Miura PP-9003 KBS Tour 90 Stiff Shafts

SW/LW: Ping Glide 56' and 60' Stock Shafts

Putter: Ping Anser - Copper w Soundslot

My main qn is that I don't know how to make sure my set all "matches" - what are the best steps to take to make sure the set is "correct" throughout?

Where I excel: I absolutely love my irons (feel, weight, flex, etc), I guess the irons would be characterized as heavy head, light shaft, heavy grip, because I use the Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 grips. Irons are 1/4 inch short from standard. Ideally I want my wedges and woods to match this feel.

Where I struggle: I can crush the 5 wood and hit that off most tees, but I struggle a lot with the driver - I sometimes struggle getting steep on downswing which is probably part of problem, but I think also maybe because I need a lighter (weight) shaft in the driver. With the SW and LW, I am STUPIDLY inconsistent - legit will make the same swing I make with my GW (which matches my irons and I love) and I will miss the green to the right from 70 yards out...like what??? I'm not a great player but can shoot low 80's on a good day and threaten breaking 40 on a 9 here and there.

Based on the above what steps would you guys take? Hoping not to break the bank too. Appreciate all the guidance and if there are posts you know of that would be helpful please point me to them.

I'll also try to post a swing, but basically I think I am a "smooth" swinger not hitter and don't take huge divots. Not a huge hitter, I can hit a good 7 iron about 165 carry.

When you talk about feel with irons, you're talking swing weight and also overall static weight. I'd say if it's economically feasible, get a full bag fitting at a reputable place like club champion. If that's not something you can afford, I'd at least to get your swing weights measured, and have them match your entire set, with maybe adding a few points to the SW and LW. As for hitting it 70 yards right... that's (very likely) entirely you. That's a massive out to in, or in to out path problem as a wedge shot will not curve much.

And counter-intuitively... player's who tend to yank on the shaft with the downswing, sometimes a heavier shaft is actually the way to go... not lighter.

Meant I miss the green from 70 yards out - so maybe it goes 10-15 yds right - but yes still awful!!!

Do most people do same swingweight through the bag (e.g. I think Tiger said he does D2 for every club) or are more people generally trying to go light to heavy from Driver to Wedge?

Appreciate any insights

Oh... I see. Same principal though. Path issue most likely unless the club is severely unfit for you.

I don't match but my SW does increase as my clubs get shorter.

D1 for Driver and 3w

D2 for hybrid and 4-9i

D3 for PW and GW

D4 for SW

D5 for LW

E0-ish for putter (although I'm considering changing to D8 or so)

YMMV... everybody is different.

Nice thanks a lot for the detailed information.

Last question - are all clubs supposed to be about the same overall weight? Again maybe people do it differently, but seems like at the least there should be some consistency.

FYI here is video of the ol' swing.

I think the issue w my wedges is combination of (in addition to human error...) 1) I have not cut them down shorter 2) shafts are the stock Ping 3) grips are stock as well.

It’s sounds like you need some accurate data in order to make some informed decisions.

Arccos golf, get the sensors, install, download the ap, and go play !!

The data you collect will tell you sooo much.

Do you have a distance gap?

Do you have a weakness? ie Driving, Approach, chipping, Sand or putter.

GIR %, Fairways % putts per GIR, total putts

How can you make a good decision about your golf without accurate information?

You just can’t, your just guessing. Try it, you’ll love it

I've never weighed my iron shafts specifically, but generally speaking the club as a whole gets heavier as it gets shorter.

For example, my driver head weighs around 195g and my shaft (when cut) is like 62g. The 3w head weighs 209g and shaft weighs about ~72g cut. Hybrid head I'm not totally sure on the weight, but the SW is D2 and the shaft weighs about 80g, so the head is obviously heavier than 209g. I don't know exactly what each iron weighs, but I know my wedge shafts are heavier than my iron shafts by about 6g and they also SW higher, too.. so the heads must he a little heavier as well.

Good advice - I kind of want to just go on a Trackman for a full day and pin down every club.

Arccos is pretty awesome, just played with a mate who had that.

I do like Club Champion but they are so pricey - if you know anyone in Chicago area that is a good fitter please let me know.

My advice is go to PGA Tour SS or similar box store and see if you can swing using the Mizuno DNA optimizer. You'll get an idea of what kind of shaft you should be in. IMO that should/could extend into your woods and wedges, too. What I mean is if the system says you should be in a lighter weight, tip soft iron shaft... then you likely need the same for your driver, 3w and wedges also. If you got fit into X100's... then you probably won't want to be in a 50g R flex type of thing. You'd be more likely to fit into a upper 60s low 70s gram weight with a stiffer tip shaft.

Once you have a starting spot you are at least informed on what and if you need to change anything. Yes Club Champion is expensive, but golf in general is a pricey sport to be involved in. ~$350 for a full bag fitting isn't horrible. If you're making mad swings and you just aren't comfortable with your gear, then it's worth it if you ask me.

Trakman is a valuable tool to dial in shot trajectory and optimizing your driver.

The part I liked about Arccos is that it’s measuring your shots while you play.

I feel like I try to hit different shots (possibly to the detriment of my score) on almost

every shot. Fades, draws, punches and with/against the wind shots.

Arccos takes in consideration elevation change, temperature and wind while your playing.

The result is an accumulation of ‘Real world’ data, not full effort swings into a screen indoors.

I feel like it’ gives a truer picture.
