Things to do while waiting for Bandon

Recommended Posts

I just got back from an impromptu solo trip over the weekend. Played Bandon Trails Saturday afternoon (clear, sunny, and incredibly windy), then Pacific Dunes Sunday morning (clear & calm until 12-13th), then 9 holes of Old MacDonald (clear, sunny, and incredibly windy). Previously in Feb I had played Bandon Dunes, under very calm conditions. I didn't take a caddy, but for both Dunes & Trails, playing partners had played before and were able to give advise on proper lines, hazards to avoid, etc. On Pacific two of the guys I was partnered with had a caddy, and he was nice enough to tell everyone on the tee yardages to fairway bunkers and the proper line. Obviously he wouldn't give us yardages or anything from the fairway, but I managed just fine with my laser. I could see the caddy was pretty good at reading greens for the guys that hired him, but they couldn't putt for s*** anyway (way off on pace and direction). I'm a decent putter, and did pretty good without any advice.

The only time I wished I'd had a caddy is on Old Mac. It was late afternoon, and they actually sent me out as a single(!). Never having played before, with no course routing info on the scorecard, meant not knowing where I was going a few times. Combined with stupid crazy wind and general weariness from a long drive to Bandon & previous round of golf in the morning, I called it a day after 9.

While waiting for November in Oregon, I tried my best to find some courses that could "sub in" for Bandon, weekend before last ;)

There are easier ways, but there are not as much fun!

Trails or Royal Ashdown Forest?

Old Mac or Deal?

Royal St. George's or Bandon/Pacfic?

And then playing in Texas wind, is like constant practice.

Found a new disappointing one - checking on flight prices and seeing that the airlines have changed their routes/schedules up to make getting back to where you live and getaway day golf much more difficult than before... darnit!

Our trip is in 94 days—and I’ve begun to find entertainment in beginning to practice stingers and bump-and-runs. As evidenced by my experience at the range yesterday, when I heard a young boy two stations over tell his dad: “That guy keeps hitting worm burners, dad! With every single club! He SUCKS!”

Needless to say, you don’t see a lot of BnR here in Ohio.

Also needless to say: I DO suck at that shot. It’s a humbling experience for those who don’t do it often.

My very first fairway shot on my first trip to Bandon was an accidental thinned/topped hybrid that carried about 80 yards with around 6 feet of elevation followed by 80 yards more roll to about 12 feet on #1 at Trails. Casually hand club back to caddy and act as if I know what I'm doing. You can do pretty well with worm burners on a lot of holes out there.

I hit the exact same shot. A topped hybrid to the start of the fairway... At least it could only get better from there!

I'm currently spamming Bandon threads so why not this one too :)

Another thing to do, after two weeks in the UK last month playing some OK courses to tied me over till Bandon, went to Streamsong this past weekend to see how offseason Florida is compared to offseason Oregon: effing hot. Effing hot and sticky would be the verdict.

Nice to see the courses though. Can definitely see the appeal to people in the Eastern 1/2 of North America in the winter wanting to go there instead of schlepping it to Oregon for the rain.

Booked last night. First trip. Doing the following solo in Mid-March

Day One - Arrive

Day Two - Pacific & Bandon

Day Three - Bandon & Old MAC

Day Four - Trails, Leave

I don’t plan on getting a caddy any round. Is this a mistake? If I had to select one course to get a caddy, which would be most beneficial?

Also, is playing Bandon twice the right move or should I swap it out with another?

You don't need a caddie, but if I had to pick one course, it would be Trails, as it's the stiffest walk and you're there on day four.

There will likely be some debate amongst those that have been there a bunch as to which course to play twice. Frankly, for your first trip there, you're going to be so jacked that you could spend the whole four days at the Practice Center and you'd call it a raging success.

Read the threads about how to prep, then go and just have a great time, then write up a trip report.

Agreed with everything Spud said. When we took our first trip, we had our worst weather day (fog that you couldn't see 70 yards out) on Pac Dunes. A caddie was great for that reason and wish we had used our replay there to see it in more optimal conditions. But you really can't go wrong replaying any of them.

Depending on what time you arrive, the Preserve is always a great warm up and a way to acclimate yourself with the course conditions. That's the only think I would suggest reconsidering.

Doing Bandon twice is fine, you won't regret it. Gotta play all the courses to pick your favorite anyway. Bandonista's generally all have their personal favorite, but we tend to like all of them. I agree with Kas on the preserve, it's fun. If that doesn't work out you can also hit Shorty's at the practice center on day one to get used to the turf.

As Spud said, you don't NEED a caddy for any of them, there's really no blind shots or hidden hazards out there, and most of the holes allow you to play how you want to play, not how the architect wants you to play. (yardage books at the pro shops will take care of you) The only places you can't see the landing zone off the tee are Old Mac #3 (just a touch right of the ghost tree is ideal, but there's room right), #7 on Bandon (more room left than you think), #9 on Pacific (varies depending on which green, check the yardage book), and #6 on Trails (just go a bit left of the middle fairway bunker). On approach shots #16 at Old Mac is blind, but there's an aiming stake at the top of the Alps. #4 on Trails can be blind if you don't clear the ridge, but it isn't a super demanding shot. #2 approach on Pacific can be blind if you're way off right.

Bandon folks, did I miss any?

I go in Feb 19 to play for 3 days. Regretting not taking advantage of off season rain gear sales. Tried on golf boots but didnt lovw them so Ill stick with my two pairs of waterproof Foot Joys. Bought my lower flying AVX for the trip and currenty working on lower punch shots and getting the ball on the green and rolling rather than flying it to the hole.

Currenly looking for hole to hole advice on the courses for a little help as Im not getting a caddy.

Being a wetside Oregonian, you think Id have quality golf rain gear. Lots of rain gear for hunting. fishing, and hiking.

Oh, and will work OT to pay for my trip...uuughhh

I'll bite :)

I wouldn't necessarily consider all of these blind (some definitely are), but there is a degree of obscured/hiddenness to them depending on your line, but still nothing you need a caddy for:

Bandon: 1, 7, 10, 13, 14

Pac: 1, 9

Old Mac: 3, 4, 16

Trails: 4, 6, 18

Oh sure they are all not properly blind as in the case of Old Mac 3. You can clearly see a lot of Bandon 1 & 14 for instance, but if you want to take the direct line, then they are blind.

Ya 18 on Trails is one of the trickiest tee shots for me to line up.I typically aim treeline and end up with a pull-draw into the bunker.

I've found that the roof of the starter's house in a good line off the tee on 18 Trails

Nice I'll give that a look in Nov. I'm trying to hit a nice draw and then over cook it, so maybe I'll go down to a 21* and go at the starter's hut.

That's the play on 18.

Trails #1 tee shot also falls into that 'obscuredness' group, similar to BD #1.

Awesomeness is the word. As in fun, interesting golf that moves far away from the tired, formulaic and uninteresting 80's/90's modern golf style that is "all there in front of you."

Didn't want to start a whole new thread so will ask my question here. 1st time trip coming in t-minus 30 days(the anticipation is almost unbearable). We will be flying into Eugene and arriving to Bandon by car at approximately 130PM if all flights and connections go smoothly. I spoke to the reservation lady who informed me the tee times for The Preserve are booked that afternoon after 1, however she hinted that our twosome may be able allowed to go off after the last tee time at 300PM. I have 2 questions:

- Has anyone had experience with being allowed to do this? Really hoping to start our trip off with a round at The Preserve.

- Which building do we check in at when we arrive? We are staying at the Lily Pond.

Everything is run out of the lodge (maybe different in the summer, but definitely in winter).

Landing at 1:30, you'd be lucky to make it to the teebox before sunset. I wouldn't have any expectations on arrival day beyond maybe getting in some time at the Punchbowl.

If the weather is crap, it'll likely already be dark by the time you get there.

I'm one of those that lives relatively close by and am cheap, so take it for what it is worth...

There are a lot of game time decisions at Bandon. If the weather is spectacular, and you don't mind spending the coin, go for it. They will start you, charge you, and you won't finish if there are slower players in front of you.

I'd go to the range, play Shorty's, and maybe go over to the Punchbowl. Take some time on the range and get back used to the grass, for free. Experiment with the hybrid bump shot around the practice green. Missing the Preserve is no huge loss IMO.

Landing in Eugene at 1:30 or arriving at the resort at 1:30?

If you're getting to the resort at 1:30, you have options:

  • You can spend the afternoon at the Practice Center and play Shorty's, which is similar to the Preserve and right by the Practice Center. This is what I would recommend. Even if the red flag is up for Shorty's, you can still play several of the holes. It really does take some getting used to the different turf there, and the Practice Center is a very low-key way to do that and unwind from a long flight/drive. Back that up with the Punchbowl and you have a nice afternoon that builds anticipation for the round the next day.
  • You can wait until 3 and go out after the last group on the Preserve, which is probably fine, depending on the number and size of groups going out before you. You may not finish, and it sounds like there are a lot of players ahead of you. They do allow larger groups on the Preserve, which can make it a little circus-like. The holes are very close to each other and you'll need to watch tee shots on a few holes. Alcohol may be a factor.
  • You can go out on one of the big courses and play some of the less-than-18 loops. Each course has a bunch, so ask at the pro shop for best routing

Check in is at the Lodge for everything, and Lily Pond is really close to the Preserve/Trails courses, though nothing is very far from anything there...

If it's resort arrival and 1:30, then I'd go with his recommendation for shortys, a few range balls, and add in the punchbowl.

I should have been more clear, our flight lands in Eugene around 10:30 and we'll be getting to the resort at about 1:30 allowing 3 hours for getting bags and the drive. I read Shorty's was closed Wednesday so assumed we wouldn't be able to utilize that but sounds like that may be a good option along with the practice area if we decide not to wait for The Preserve. I figured if we tee of at 3:10 we'd have 1.5 hours or so of sunlight so would at least get close to finishing.

Shorty's is comprised of 9 holes, several of which are the target greens for the South range. Thursday through Sunday, they use the North range and all the holes are open. Monday-Wednesday, Shorty's is "closed," but you can still play the four holes that are not part of the range. With 1.5 hrs or less of daylight, I'd definitely suggest loosening up at the Practice Center and play a few holes on Shorty's, then drinks and Punchbowl before dinner. All depends on how important starting your trip at the Preserve is.

You can also check when you arrive to see if any groups have cancelled at the Preserve. That is not unlikely.

Options....

Options....

Good information to know, thanks! It's good to have these different choices especially when we're one missed connection/delayed flight away from having our decision made for us. I would like to get Preserve in there but might just not be on the opening day. I imagine weather will dictate much of what we do as well.
