Your Golf Stereotype

I am the guy Wal Mart Burkes Outlet or Goodwill fashion. Floppy Pukka hat or Straw hat with a cheap cigar. Play older vintage irons and non conforming rusty wedges. Like old rusty beat to hell lead taped putters nothing newer than a rusty 97 Scotty. Do play a somewhat newer driver with beat to hell V-Steel woods. All in a vintage Ping Hoofer bag with Lord only knows what school emblem is on it. Since retiring from serious comp and big money matches 10 years ago I play for fun rarely practice. Could give two hoots less what I shoot. I just have fun and play maybe one or two days a week. Having the golf fun of my life--- Could care less what sticks someone else plays or how they dress

I discovered this past weekend that I am the "take the game too seriously, therefore put too much pressure on myself and will never get better until I figure out how to calm myself" guy. Sorry, that was a mouthful. I was playing with my usual group this past Saturday and at the turn one of the guys bought us shots of Jim Beam. We all started getting looser and playing better. At 13, which is close to the halfway shack, he grabbed another round of shots. I played even more "relaxed" after the 2nd shot. Long story short, I played 8 strokes betters on the back, which is the harder 9. I don't drink on the course and I don't drink regularly with my healthy lifestyle, so I'm going to have to figure out a way to chill the f*%k out without the swing sauce.

Drinking more is just the easy answer..... ;)

I'm the guy who knows what he SHOULD BE doing, but can't execute it.

"I need to draw the ball around the corner". Block right.

"I need to bump the ball into the side of that ridge, which will then run up to the hole." Thin bullet off the other side of the green.

"I need to stay down on this ball below my feet" Skulled.

SO true. Sometimes I tell myself to "skull" this shot, or "miss the green right" to get it outta my system because I'll end up not doing a shot I want.

To some I might be "Poser Guy" because i'm always at the course head to toe in Nike golf gear (I actually like other golf gear but for some reason all my birthday/christmas/father's day gifts are nike shirts and hats).

But in reality i'm "Anonymous Friendly Pair-up" guy. I normally play as a single and get paired up at random. My golf partners will have a great time on the course and we have friendly interactions, and at the end of the round, will tell me how fun it was out there, but will have absolutely no idea what my name is or anything about me, or even what score I shot. During these rounds I will never talk about myself, I will only ask them questions and get them to talk about whatever interests them. Notice a new club in their bag, I'll ask them where they got it, if they're liking it. I'll always play the tees they play, general "rules" they use. The only thing I don't do is gamble.

I'm the slow guy, mostly because I am 74 with arthritic feet. But when I finally get to the ball, there's no routine ... I just hit it and limp back to the cart.

Hey sometimes you can not help things--- If you play with me I can get you right to your ball most times and you will not have to limp too far. Some courses are not built to be "user friendly" when it comes to those types of issues. I can somewhat relate because I have bad ankles. Some days I am ok some days not.

After the sun sets you'll find me at local night clubs and hollows enjoying blues and jazz sets with the occasional sit in. Like festering wound the sun rises and beckons me back to reality. I arrive and walk into a cold dark steel cocoon. crab a dirty ceramic mug and fill it with yesterdays coffee. I saunter over to my locker remove my blue jeans that are held up with a vintage guitar strap, unbutton my Fender De Vinci shirt and slide the well worn Asics Mexico 66 off. Grabbing a pair of greasy safety orange cover all in their place. Punch in my time card at 0545 and walk to the shed were John Deere is waiting for me. I fumble under the seat feeling for my ipod, and with relief I find it still charged. push the ear buds in and select Joe Bonamasa, push start and grab the wheel with my formerly nicotine stained fingers hit the lights and off I go. I'll make a detour to 20120 Heron Dr. to be greeted with a smile and thermos of fresh brewed Columbian. My cell phone blares out Stevie Ray's Crossfire, reminding me I'm on the clock. Back in the saddle and wide awake, I day dream of simpler times and how I got to be in this mess...Oh that's right, I say to myself, you've been married three times! An hour later and two fairways left, I make another pit stop this time for some homemade pastries off of # 7. She's a wonderful woman with many talents (G rated) and I'm blessed to have such friends in such a short space of time many of which I'll be seeing later in the day for the smg....(standard money game).

I'm one of those guys who can shoot 70 or near 90, depending on the day and how much I imbibe. I play for fun, don't let golf bother me anymore, it's just a game. Sure I prefer to play well, but if I don't, there's always next week....I also hate slow play, then again doesn't most everyone?

I'm the ADD & OCD guy. I'm the guy who barely pays attention to what he's doing. I've been known to not stop telling a joke while I'm hitting a shot. Oh... and I'm also throwing out Caddyshack quotes the whole day.

No one pays attention to me because my swing is so unorthodox until it's time to press and I'm up 5. I always keep the hole in front of me. Always

I have known many guys over the years from either side of the ball with unorthodox swings that could get the job done.

What I lack in distance I more than make up for with management. There is zero chance I will ever hit the ball 275. The body doesn’t work that way for me.

I'm the opposite of a tinkerer. If i find a club that works, I continue to use it until it is broken. I've owned 2 putters for the entirety of my life for example. I have wear spots in my 710 AP2s. I likely get steryotyped (correctly) as at Titleist fanboy.

I'm the guy who likes to wear bold outfits that properly coordinate... Look good, play good.

I play a pretty low ball flight due to frequenting an open links course... not sure if that's a stereotype or not.

I play fast, but will look for my ball if I manage to hit it into the crap. I see incredibly well, so I will likely find it quickly- I mark my balls very distinctly because I find balls in weird places, which gets me accused of cheating from time to time.

I will buy you a beer at the turn weather I know you or not, I will also buy myself several. I am generous with gimmes praying that the favor is returned.

I will remove my hat to shake your hand on the 18th green.

Another stereotype- I'm WRX long...
