Who is using a 4 iron UDI type club?

I tried to search this but had limited results.

Has anyone given up their 4 iron for a UDI or other DI type club? Love the 3 UDI I had but since it is much more fun to hit than the 3 iron.. started debating replacing the 4 iron as well. I am actually a good ball striker overall, and don’t typically find myself hitting out of the rough with long irons much.

I don’t want to start a ball striking versus club need debate, as to be honest, I love my 3/4 irons, just not getting to practice as much lately. Hoping for some good feedback on people who have made the switch..

Thanks!

I have a 2,3,and 4 UDI in my bag. I love them and find them nice to hit with a nice carry and soft landing.

I recently switched from 716 CB to P770, and also switched by driving iron from a TMB to a TP UDI. I'm a big fan of having a driving style iron as the longest in the bag.

For me I find that the UDI style of iron has a lot more versatility than a regular iron. I can really step on it and get an extra 10-15 yards out of it for tee shots, but still fills the gap between my hybrid and 5iron. I play my UDI at 0.25" longer than the comparable 4i to get a bit more distance out of it too.

I'm about to add a TP UDI 3 in the bag in place of my hybrid, will have a 105 gram graphite shaft playing at 2 iron length, primarily for off the tee. Not sure what it will do to the gapping, although I still see the two clubs having different purposes.

Don't see any downside to having these in place of long irons. Unless you're playing a super long course, or are a total stick, having a club you can consistently launch from this distance is much more important than hitting a very precise number.

Just put a KBS proto hybrid 105 in my 3 TP UDI and it’s money!

This is going to sound dumb, but I go 2 iron MP18 fli hi, but my 4 iron is just the regular MMC. It blends better with my set, and makes shots supposedly marginally easier to hit than the MBs and SC's. That being said, the Fli Hi is silly easy to hit from the grass. I use my 2 iron as a 5 wood basically

Last year I had a 3 hybrid then small cavity back 4 iron. I thought I would miss not having a 3 iron, but did not. This year I switched irons and chose 5-pw plus a 2 and 4 utility iron. I felt like the 3 hybrid launched too high and was easy to over hook, found myself aiming further and further right. The new 2 utility is great off the tee on tight par fours and the 4 utility is good from fairway or rough and lands soft on the green. Very happy with my decision.

I carry a #1 and #3 Tour Preferred UDI in my bag presently and love those, but I also own a (Tour-issued) #4 Tour Preferred UDI. (And yes, there is a RSI 'TP' model of the UDI with the same loft). The (23*) #4 Tour Preferred UDI is NOT in my bag now because I want to maintain 'consistent (4*) loft gaps' across my iron set, (as shown below), plus I don't feel the need for a 'driving iron type club' at that loft...

Should I ever decide to carry my #4 (23*) Tour Preferred UDI, it could replace my (24*) SLDR 5-Iron without causing a problem, but for now at least, I feel the 'conventional SLDR 5-iron' is the more preferable option based on how I 'normally' use an iron club with 23 or 24 degrees of loft. As stated, I personally don't see the need for a 'driving iron type club' in that particular loft range, but YMMV may apply here!...

- 16* #1 Tour Preferred UDI NOTE THE CONSISTENT 4* LOFT GAPS

- 20* #3 Tour Preferred UDI

- 24* #5 SLDR Iron

- 28* #6 SLDR Iron

- 32* #7 SLDR Iron

- 36* #8 SLDR Iron

Note: All (6) clubs above have KBS C-Taper Lite 110-gram shafts. Note also there is no SLDR 9-iron,(41*) shown above. That's because with it's 42* loft, my Cleveland Niblick PW works very well as a 'double duty' club, (it's both my 9-Iron and my PW), allowing me to save a bag spot for something else...(See my signature for just what else is in Bobcat's Bag at the very end of this post)...FWIW, I love each and every club in my set!..

TOUR PREFERRED UDI's - 'MY ULTIMATE DRIVING IRONS' - (#1 & #3)

THESE SLDR IRONS ARE LONG AND QUITE FORGIVING - I CARRY THE 5-IRON THRU 8-IRON!

THIS VERY 'VERSATILE' NIBLICK PW IS 42*, SO IT'S IS ALSO MY 9-IRON!

Thought about switching out my Z945 4i for a udi style many times...

However, Ive hit too many good shots with it to let it go. Ive also come to terms I dont need an extra 5-10y from the 4i spot.

I can see it being a valuable addition for many people though. I do at times throw in a J15 DF 3-iron (19*) and drop my 4 or 5i for the round.

24* dHy. Cheap, ugly and underrated. Good for folks who find a 4-iron kind if hard to elevate consistently, but who hit high-lofted hybrids too high. Bulge and roll make it forgiving.

I started the year with a 4 iron then switched to the xforged UT 23. It gave me a little more confidence off the tee. I could shape it still and it was really nice out of rough. Glad i made the decision.

which shaft did you go with???

distance pretty much same as your 4 iron?

and hows the flight compared to your 4 iron?

I have a Nike Vapor Fly Pro 3 Iron and recently swapped out my VR Forged Pocket Cavity 4 iron for a Titleist T-MB 4 Iron. I bent the T-MB weak to remove some of the offset, I have Graphite in the 3 iron and it's my "distance" driving iron, and a steel shaft in the T-MB and is my "control" driving iron.

I had a Vapor Fly Pro 4 Iron, and even with steel shaft it was too jumpy, the T-MB plays more like a regular iron IMO than the Fly Pro and most "driving" irons.
