One i refinished myself..........

Recommended Posts

I've just managed to replace a putter i should never have sold. It looked a little less than i'd hoped for on arrival - being pretty anal about my equipment. A couple of well known putter refinishers in the UK couldn't even be bothered to reply to my emails. So,i attacked it myself.

**A couple of pics again how it arrived to me; with a few dents, knocks on the topline, some chatter on the bumper etc:

I then carefully and sympathetically (Trying not to lose weight) shaped it and got rid of the dings with foam sanding pads of various grades. I guess this took a couple of hours taking my time:

Scales said i'd removed 9g. [The head supposedly weighing 350g as standard factory specs - and i worked on it with shaft fitted.....so don't know 'truthful / exact' factory weight]. I work with metal for a living and don't believe i removed 9g with hand sanding for one single minute. Be lucky if i removed 3 or 4g. Anyway; final weight came out as 341g as below:

I then had the head vapour blasted at approx 75psi with 100-200 grit glass beads:

And finally i finished it off; by cleaning up the face to make the grooves a shiny finish as per factory, satin finishing the sole and re-doing all the paintfill:

And all done for just 3 hours work [2 hand finishing - 1 hour paintfilling and cleaning up after] and £10 / $15 for the blast-cleaners. And no 8 week wait either !!

Very well done what type of sanding pads did you use?

Foam sanding blocks. Come in all sorts of different grades of grit. Been using on clubs (Cast / stainless NOT chrome plated or forged) for nicks etc for years.....

Thanks! What type of grades of grit do you usually go with?

Looks great, what grit did you start with?

The sanding blocks usually get graded here in the UK, rather than having grit numbers. ie: Extra Course, Course, Medium and Fine.

Some blocks have one type on each side ie: Medium on one side and one edge, Fine on one side and one edge.

I've only ever used medium and fine grades on golf clubs. Medium is aggressive enough at first - but like any......smooths out after some use. A well-worn fine is almost like a polishing type grade. Not abrasive at all and only used for final finishing; not nick removal.

Wow, really nice work for a DIY! What do you think of that type of flow neck vs. a round neck?

Throughout my life i've pretty much struggled with putting. Being very streaky, or some days / weeks / months being just plain average or below ! Got well into plus handicap here in the UK as an am; after being a Pro for 15 years. Not saying it held me back at all. But i never felt truly comfortable putting - whilst being a reasonable 'golfer'. Maybe it was just mental. Like the game itself hey......

A face balanced / low offset mallet (Odyssey Rossie type) helped me no-end for many years. Then one day i felt a need to try a short'ish flow necked putter.

I've never felt more comfortable and confident and haven't looked back. And that's why i HAD to find the exact type / model i previously used. I'm really happy with it now..

You a flow-neck user ? Or contemplating one ?

Very professional looking.

THANKYOU !

I do work - pretty much hands on every day - with metal for a living. Although not usually quite on this scale / or as 'delicate' as this.

But yea; 90% as good as new for a fraction of the cost and not too much pain involved doing it.

Cheers.
