Golf's new villain

Recommended Posts

Golf Digest just ran a piece on Patrick Reed, and how the sport desperately needs him because they need an antagonist, a villain. According to the author of the article it has been a long time since golf's last true villain, Jack Nicklaus. He was the prime challenger to Arnold Palmer's throne, and was met with derision. But Nicklaus made the point that although he had issues with Arnie's Army, he never had issues with Arnie, and they became good friends.

The difference in the case of Reed, is that he has come out and taken issue with his 'nemesis', Jordan Spieth. The article makes the argument that Reed has the pedigree, unlike other modern-day 'villians' such as Ian Poulter and Rory Sabbatini. But unlike Nicklaus, it seems, at least for now, he will never become buddy-buddy with Spieth.

In the 2018 version of the PGA Tour where friendship seems to be the norm, do we really need a villain like Patrick Reed as the article suggests? Or can't we all just get along?

Can't imagine Reed becoming buddy-buddy with anyone.

There is a reason why he plays his practice rounds alone save for his caddie and wife walking around with him.

He's nothing more than a pariah with an inflated ego and a sadistic manager who fuels his own delusions.

Life on tour with no friends, no equipment deal & no comradery with other players will be harder going forward.

I don’t think he’ll change until he rocks up at a Ryder Cup and has to play the four balls as a single.

I wonder if it would be within the rights of the 2020 captain to say “I know he qualified in the top 8, but I really don’t want that guy anywhere near my team”?

Heard Steve Johnson on The Hank Haney Show call Reed "Table for One".

Next years Champions Dinner at Augusta could be interesting. Just Reed making his way through a few dozen hamburgers after a number of mysterious calls offs the afternoon of the dinner.

what's the reason that all the players hate him? i mean he is cocky in interviews, but thats not enough to make him such an a******. there are other cocky players that have their friends...

The list is long...he stole from teammates in college, has been accused of cheating, has a terrible personality, an annoying wife, and he’s a “blamer”. All of that adds up to people not liking you.

It's disgusting how GD feels the need to spin Reed's infantile behavior. Let's not conflate "villain" with "***hole".

Nicklaus was subjected to significantly worse conditions - ranging from heckling to trampled lies in the rough - thanks to the "loyalty" of Arnie's Army and still rose above. Reed's issues are entirely self-inflicted, yet it's always someone else's fault. Guess what buddy, if you tend to have problems with everybody, maybe you're the problem!

I would love to be the next PC/RC captain - even if he makes the team on points I would bench his *** the entire week until his mandatory singles match. Also, thanks for volunteering to put yourself in the envelope Patrick!

It's impossible to be universally anything these days with the current media. You could be the biggest a-hole in the world, some editor is going to task a writer with doing a contrarian piece just to get clicks.

Often two writers will be asked to write stories with opposite views etc...

A-hole = he just calls it like he sees it dude

Nice guy = he's fake

I would say golf already has it’s share of “villians.” You can put Tiger, Phil, Rory, JT, Dustin, Spieth, Reed, etc. all on the list.

Some player at some point is going to irritate the h@ll out of somebody. To single out Reed is stupid, letʻs try to destroy a guyʻs career for some “views.”

I thought Fleetwoodʻs antics after the Ryder Cup were over the top but iʻm not going to torch him every chance i get thru the media.

Some guys just need to enhance that huge chip on their shoulder i guess, better to just let your clubs do the talking like most players do.

Wait... timeout... i’ve got a VILLIAN, the USGA for screwing up numerous US Open set ups lately, bang on that Media. Not sexy enough, sorry.

The smoke about Reed seems to be turning to fire.

Just my opinion...But calling out Spieth for not wanting to play with him is just dumb. Maybe he really isn't worried about PR problems, endorsement $ or what the rest of the world thinks.

Even if he wins a lot more tournaments it is going to be a lonely career if he keeps this stuff up.

If this guy won't even bother trying to reconcile with his own family, then I highly doubt he is a stand up person in other aspects of his life. He has demonstrated this time and time again to be true.

I would like Reed to keep winning. I don't know him personally, don't know anyone who knows him, and don't know any of the people on tour who don't like him. But I do get a kick out of other people (in my exact situation) who actually get upset about things that do not affect them. As a history lesson, prior to social media, people didn't actually get emotionally hurt about any of this.

Reed should be really popular, he has got serious game, plays aggressively the lot. He was just born without a filter between his brain and his mouth.

I think sports villains are that way because of ruthless execution of excellence. In their primes, the Yankees, TW, etc became villains through performance, not by sniping at their fellow competitors. Reed may end up being seen more like various NFL linemen, Dobler, Suh etc. who developed negative reputations for trying to injure other players.

a month ago a bunch of people on here were ready to give that title to Bryson DeChambeau...now y'all want to jump on the bandwagon and throw Reed underneath it...

Let it go, dont get all wrapped up in the silly drama off the course...cheer for what goes on between the ropes

The US got beat plain and simple...only the media (read the GC) wants to fan the flames to give them something to discuss on the morning drive

Jack a villain? Please. He was a threat to the King. No fair comparison to lump him w the immature P Reed.

Someone he idolizes (Tiger) needs to pull him aside and tell both him and his wife to shut up and grow up
