Who is the best (or among the best) Female golfer of all time?

Recommended Posts

I was reading through the Mt Rushmore thread and realized there seems to be no real consensus about the best female golfers of all time. Now most of us including myself don't know that much about the LPGA all time records which might be a blessing in disguise because we can be more objective while looking at all the numbers without having chosen our side already (see Tiger vs Jack).

Here's my list based strictly on the numbers giving no bonus points for playing more recently:

Points: Regular tournaments= 1. Majors= 5

1. Mickey Wright (wins from 1956-1973) = 134pts

-82 wins including 13 majors

2. Patty Berg (1937-1962) =120pts

-60 wins including 15 majors

3. Annika sorenstam (1995-2008) =112pts

-72 wins including 10 majors

3. Kathy Whitworth (1962-1985) =112pts

-88 wins including 6 majors

5. Louise Suggs (1946-1962) =106pts

-61 wins including 11 majors

6. Betsy Rawls (1951-1972) =87pts

-55 wins including 8 majors

7. Babe Zaharias (1940-1955) =81pts

-41 wins including 10 majors

8. Karrie Webb (1995-2014) =69pts

-41 wins including 7 majors

9. Nancy Lopez (1978-1997) =60pts

-48 wins including 3 majors

10. Julie Inkster (1983-2006) =59pts

-31 wins including 7 majors

10. Patty Shehan (1981-1996) =59pts

-35 wins including 6 majors

12. Sandra Haynie (1962-1982) =58pts

-42 wins including 4 majors

12. Betsy King (1984-2001) =58pts

-34 wins including 6 majors

14. Pat Bradley (1976-1995) =55pts

-31 wins including 6 majors

14. Amy Alcott (1975-1991) =55pts

-35 wins including 5 majors

Honorable mentions:

Inbee Park (2008-2018) =47pts

-19 wins including 7 majors

Yani Tseng (2008-2012) =35pts

-15 wins including 5 majors

Lorena Ochoa (2004-2009) =35pts

-27 wins including 2 majors

-Edit: I reordered the list to give a value of 5 regular tournaments for each major to have an exact ranking.

She is certainly considered the GOAT by most analysts by now.

Here's a list on the men's side using a similar formula. I admit that it excludes a few prominent international players who deserve to be there, but remember this is just an exercise:

1. Jack Nicklaus (1962-1986) =145pts

-73 wins including 18 majors

2. Tiger Woods (1996-2018) =136pts

-80 wins including 14 majors

3. Sam Snead (1936-1965) =110pts

-82 wins including 7 majors

4. Ben Hogan (1938-1959) =100pts

-64 wins including 9 majors

5. Arnold Palmer (1955-1973) =90pts

-62 wins including 7 majors

6. Walter Hagen (1914-1936) =89pts

-45 wins including 11 majors

7. Byron Nelson (1935-1951) =72pts

-52 wins including 5 majors

8. Tom Watson (1974-1998) =71pts

-39 wins including 8 majors

9. Gene Sarazen (1922-1941) =67pts

-39 wins including 7 majors

10. Phil Mickelson (1991-2018) =63pts

-43 wins including 5 majors

11. Gary Player (1958-1978) =60pts

-24 wins including 9 majors

12. Lee Trevino (1968-2004) =53pts

-29 wins including 6 majors

13. Cary Middlecoff (1945-1961) =52pts

-40 wins including 3 majors

14. Vijay Singh (1993-2008) =46pts

-34 wins including 3 majors

15. Jimmy Demaret (1938-1957) =43pts

-31 wins including 3 majors

Honorable mentions:

Bobby Jones (1923-1930) =35 pts

-7 majors (+6 US and British Am wins)

Harry Vardon (1896-1914) =35pts

-7 majors

Nick Faldo (1984-1997) =33pts

-9 wins including 6 majors (+24 Euro wins)

Rory McIlroy (2010-2018) =30pts

14 wins including 4 majors

Seve Ballesteros (1978-1988) =29pts

9 wins including 5 majors (+45 Euro wins)

Annika and only because she did her record in 11 years.

Wright 17, Whitworth 23, Berg 25

Good point. Although the years I have are from first to last LPGA Tour victory. Mickey actually won her 13 majors in an 9 year stretch of pure domination which I believe is why she was considered the greatest for so long

Annika was great, but I think recency bias works in her favor. Mickey Wright retired from full-time play in 1969 & only played occasionally after that, often at the request of the LPGA because of the interest she would generate by playing. That gives Wright & Sorenstam essentially the same length playing careers & I vote for Wright. I still believe she had one of if not the best golf swings, male or female, I ever saw.

Here's a list on PGA's website and what I don't understand is why Patty is ranked so low. Can somebody explain it to me?? Both of these websites rank: her 10th of all time:

https://www.pga.com/...ers-of-all-time

https://www.thoughtc...ll-time-1563895

The only logical explanation I can see is she played too early winning 8 of her 15 majors before the LPGA was officially founded in 1950 (she being one of the cofounders). Perhaps she's seen in the same light as Walter Hagen with his 11 majors super early on during the founding of the PGA Tour.

This thread shines a light on the contrasts between generations that is also addressed in the GOAT discussions with the men. I believe as time goes by that golf rankings will be bifurcated like baseball is with the dead ball era or the designated hitter rule. The reason I say this, and the DH is a good example, is that golf as we now know it is fundamentally different with the steroid balls and clubs vs the balata/persimmon eras. So the skills that were coveted a generation ago may not have the same advantage now just like the DH changed baseball.

For me Mickey Wright was the best of her era and Annika the best of hers. And Jack was the best of his era and Tiger is the best of his. Of these 4 players Mickey had the best swing. All the others on the lists had their moments in the sun where they played well enough to win often and inspire the rest of us to play and try to play our best. They showed what was possible when a player had full command of the skills necessary to control the ball in ways the rest of us only imagine. Of one thing I am sure. I am glad my living didn't depend on besting any of them on the golf course...

Interesting topic - Most industry/LPGA/purists types will say Mickey Wright, and generally, I would have to agree.

What's the quote - "Golf wasn't invented in 1997." :).

However... there's always a however lol. One has to realize, the competition at that time was no where near what it is today. Similar to the Jack/Tiger argument, I suppose. I don't know that there's a way to quantify it, but the depth of field had greatly increased, especially in the past 15-20 years, specifically since South Korea players have started to dominate women's golf. Realistically a win today has more worth (not speaking monetarily) than a win 40-60 years ago, heck even 20-30 years ago. Even Annika's career was winding down as a large contingent of the South Korean's started dominating. So a player winning 20 events over the past 10 years should be considered as impressive or more than a player winning 20 events in the 50's and 60's, or even the 80's and 90's for instance. How to quantify that win for win - I have no idea.

On the other side, there there's also the equipment issue, similar to Jack - Mickey also played with the same era equipment as well - how much better would Wright be with modern equipment? Or would she have won as much playing against today's fields? No way to know for certain.

All time - got to stick with Mickey.

Modern Era - Annika for sure.

Going forward - South Koreans are the top of the tier these days, but there are so many good/great ones, that it will be hard for one to stand out above the others. Se Ri Pak did in her time, and IBP did for a bit, but similar to Ochoa, expecting a shorter career will work against here. Looking (way) ahead, Ariya (Thailand) could be an option if she keeps playing at her current level for years to come. She's the Michelle Wie everyone hoped Wie would be.

Also, not sure about the 1 point/5 point spread for majors - even the in place rankings for women, ie HoF for instance, only gives 2 points for a major vs 1 for a regular event.

Although not sure if changes the top of this list any...

For sure, I'm not sure about the exact number either and would probably go with more of a 3 or a 4, but I know many people only care about the majors, so I tried to compromise.

If we value majors only at two the top position would be much closer with Kathy being the biggest benefactor.

1. Mickey Wright 95pts

2. Kathy Whitworth 94pts

3. Annika sorenstam 82pts

4. Patty Berg 75pts

5. Louise Suggs 72pts

6. Betsy Rawls 63pts

7. Babe Zaharias 51pts

7. Nancy Lopez 51pts

9. Karrie Webb 48pts

10. Sandra Haynie 46pts

Sandra Haynie’s out, I’ll take Danny Noonan

Anika is and will be known as the modern female golfer to advance the game but....

The Babe is highly underrated to what she did to female sports in general. She had the grid and tenacity to compete as a multi sport athlete plus came back from cancer and competed with a colostomy bag.

Wright, though her achievements (wins/majors/scoring titles) are very comparable to Sorenstam's.

I will concede that Annika would have likely removed any doubt/discussion had she not retired early. When she left the game mid-2008 (age 37) she had already notched multiple wins and was still mentally and physically equipped to keep competing.

That's what Ben Hogan said. I defer to his judgement.

It is a nice measuring tool, but it way undervalues Bobby Jones' 7 major championships won out of the 11 in which he played from 1923 to 1930 (and finished second in 3 others). And that was basically the only "pro" tournaments that he played in that time span. He might have won a regional open tournament (with pros) as well.

I always feel the need to put a plug in for Jones, whose record was fantastic during that time span.

Best swing - Mickey Wright

Best Golfer - Annika Sorenstam

The eras are just so different, strength of field so much more, Annika’s record carries a lot more weight. A ton more. That’s not Wright’s fault and maybe if she’d been born at the same time, Wright woulda upped her game, but theres just a big difference in the quality of those wins.

Talking about eras tho, women’s golf post-annika is different as well. The influx of SKoreans has changed the competition greatly.

That would place him right in front of Phil if we include his 6 additional amateur majors. I think he deserves it as well and his record straight up would make him the greatest of all time. Of course most people think that title belongs to Jack or Tiger because they competed with stronger fields...but that's besides the point.

Sticking with the men if we credit Vijay and Ernie for their Euro tour wins then they become nearly on par with Phil which I think is actually fair. It might go something like this:

65pts Phil Mickelson (1991-2018) 45 wins 5 majors

61pts Vijay Singh (1993-2008) 49 wins 3 majors

52pts Ernie Els (1993-2013) 40 wins 4 majors

And let's not forget Seve:

74pts Seve Ballesteros (1978-1988) 54 wins 5 majors

Annika

This is hard because the Women’s British and the Evian haven’t always had major status so we ought to adjust the list somehow to reflect that. Arguably that made it harder in the “old days” but I would argue the wider international participation more than offsets that.

I say Annika because of the mindset she brought to her preparation and the game.

Ochoa is the one I feel we were robbed of. You have to respect her decision but I wish she had played longer. If she had my vote might have changed.
