Golf boots

Recommended Posts

Ok, a couple of recent threads have started me thinking.

I have some FJ zippered boots that were absolutely brilliant last winter and well into spring given my course can get a bit boggy in places. I didn’t rotate them as they were far better than any shoes could’ve been, not once did any moisture get in therefore no smell. I wore them 2 or 3 times per week for 4 or 5 months and not a single incident of anything unpleasant. No paper, no need to wash and dry, no need to refresher spray, simply superb for purpose in all weathers from dew, to pouring rain to snow.

I’m now after another pair and the sensible side of me suggests I should simply get another pair of the same model, but the other side of me simply won’t allow that, I’d be annoyed.

Has anyone got winter boots that they’d highly recommend? Obviously I’m tempted to wait for a couple of months to see what comes out, but there are some options like the Adidas Climaproof around too.

I love mine. Switched from Bandon2 to the Vaporstorms and they are super comfy, and most importantly, they keep me dry.

Thanks very much for this thread. I found the Vaporstorms used on eBay and gave them a shot.

We got 5 inches of rain the past two days. No carts allowed today. I always walk anyway, but the course has to be DRENCHED for them to pass up that revenue. And it was. A great time to give the Vaporstorms a try.

First, go up a size if you can. It takes me like 5 minutes to get my feet into them. Once they are on they are fine, but the inner boot is so soft it rolls under a lot.

Second, these things are so ugly I’m surprised they made them. As an uglier bonus, they have camouflage. Yikes. They look okay with pants as the pants cover the top of the boot, and the camo, and the rest of the shoe looks normal. But once it got warmer and I took my wind pants off down to shorts, OH MY. Shorts with the Vaporstorms is the worst look I’ve ever had on a golf course. Just brutal, style-wise.

But you don’t buy Vaporstorms because they are pretty. Do they work? Absolutely 100% yes they do. I’ve played in them twice now, soaking wet course, and my socks and inner shoe were perfectly dry. Like wearing a high-top TW13. I walked right through most puddles, deep puddles, and didn’t notice. Never slipped despite the slop out there.

Thanks for the advice. Without this thread I wouldn’t have known these were out there. Now if I could just find them in a 14 so it doesn’t take me 5 minutes to get them on. :)

You have to bend the outer over completely before trying to get your foot in, then it’s much easier.

im undecided between this years Footjoy rain/winter boot and the Vaporstorm. Im having a hard time deciding.

anyone who has both want to tell me more about either pair.??

I’ve got both but haven’t used the Nike yet as it’s nowhere near wet enough. The same sole is on a pair of Lunar Vapor Control 2 and I have no issues with those.

I would imagine both will work perfectly well so just go for the one you prefer. I really have no complaints with the Footjoys, they were excellent for me last year.

The ONLY thing I don’t like about my Vaporstorms, besides being hard to put on, is the bottom tread. It just eats up greens.

If I’m wearing Vaporstorms, the course is soft and wet and the greens are soft. You can see each and every step I take on the soft greens with the tread on these. I try to putt last if I can. I putt my longer putt, tip toe up and mark, then stand around in the fringe until everyone else has putted.

I just hope the green cures itself before the next group comes through.

Other than that, they are fantastic. It has rained at least once per day for the last month. 30+ days. My course is a bog. I wore my FJ hyperflexes on Monday, and despite being waterproof, my socks were soaked just from the water/dew splashing up on every step and soaking the sock from the top down into the shoe.

Vaporstorms I just walk and don’t worry about it. Plus they are really warm so they’ll be a good choice when it gets really cold here soon enough.

How are the boots around the ankles?

I wear boots for literally nothing so the thing that puts me off them is having too much support around the ankle and not being able to swing properly...that said playing golf with four layers on makes it pretty difficult to swing as well.

You needn’t worry, you forget you’re wearing them within 5 minutes.

The Vaporstorms the upper is just rubber. So it folds and moves and is very light anyway. You won’t notice it. Except for how horrible they look with shorts. :)
