Joining a club in Scotland.

Recommended Posts

Anyone joined a club in Scotland as an Overseas member? I love to go over and have done a little research. My thought is that you want to be close to a town you enjoy staying in and Aberdeen seems a good choice and nearby is Cruden Bay or Murcar. Of course, St. Andrews is heaven on earth and while I have not played Elie or Panmure they might deserve consideration. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers

We have no waiting list at Royal Aberdeen. There are a few overseas members that I know of. I have no idea the price, doubt it is that bad compared to American prices.

If you are a member of a Royal Course then there are a lot of reciprocals you can use on some very good courses round the world.

I am tempted with a Montreal trip next summer.

There are numerous member from overseas of the New club of St Andrews, I have no idea waiting list or options but that is a good option.

Join the R and A is a very good option.

I am a member at Machrahanish and Royal North Devon (England). If you go once a year it can pay for itself especially when you consider the ability to get early and preferred tee times. If you have guests with you it's even better as they generally pay pennies compared to the normal non member fee.

These days I goto Machrahanish more than RND mostly because my wife has fallen in love with Campbeltown and we have been visiting as often as possible.

Another advantage I found is that many Scottish clubs extend a discount to you if you have a membership at another Scottish club. And indeed your buddies are big beneficiaries when they are with you at your club. They pay along the lines of $30 in cases i have seen.

if I take a guest on its £25 vs £180 for a visitor. I am only allowed the same guest once a month.

I was only £27 for the New course as a guest and £67 as a guest on the Old.

2019 it is. Likely to be cooler but less humid than Houston. I've still to see Murcar or Cruden Bay so might combine them with a visit up to Aberdeenshire.

I'm getting married in Boddam next July. Just confirmed my wedding day tee time at Cruden Bay! Really excited to play that course. Playing at North Berwick on the same trip as a single, so if you're around, let me know.

Also, following this because I'm interested in overseas membership info.

I like Cruden Bay, fun easier course. gorgeous views. My dad is a member there too.

Murcar never a fan of but some love it.

  • 1 year later...

I posted this in another thread about prices in UK. Country membership, which is essentially an overseas membership, at Tain costs less than a round at Kingsbarns!

For those wanting to save some money for courses in Scotland, a caddy at Royal Dornoch advised to become a country member at Tain and receive 3 reciprocal rounds at 26 Scottish courses for no more than £20 a round during summer (only £12 October to March), including Royal Dornoch, and Royal Colombo in Sri Lanka for those travelling a little further afield. The country membership is only £260 a year as well, giving you unlimited golf at Tain if you so wish. There is potentially £1000s of savings.https://www.tain-golfclub.co.uk/tain-golf-club/membership-2 Open competitions asOn -, @Hawkeye77 mentions are also great ways of saving a big chunk from the normal green fees if you don't mind tournament play. Golf Empire is a good site for finding open competitions, which you can search for individual courses, areas, countries in the UK, individuals, seniors, mixed etc.
