Adam hits a 5 iron 230 yards...

Actually a lot of pros seem to hit 210+ with their 5 irons (dare I say 6 irons). I am going to take wind out of the equation because Ive seen pros hit into the wind at ridicolous distances. So... can someone please explain to me whats going on....

How the heck do these guys hit them so far?! According to Trackman stats, 5 irons pro averages are about 195 yards (https://blog.trackmangolf.com/trackman-average-tour-stats/)

Oh I know... maybe PGA tour actually being played on Mars?

Adam Scott is a lot longer than the average pro. The very next drive states 181mph ball speed which is 120mph+. That 5 iron also didn't carry 232y, it pitched about 10 paces short of the green so we're looking at closer to 220y~. With his clubhead speed that is perfectly normal for a 5-iron, especially off the tee.

Valtiel is correct. That ball he hit on the “232 yard par 3” that you are referring to did not carry all the way to the hole. It didn’t even actually land on the green. Perhaps 223-225 carry at the most.

I know there was a touch of helping breeze as well. Look at the flag. That decreased the effective carry to 220, maybe 218. I can’t remember elevation, but it may have been a touch downhill as well.

Adam Scott can certainly Carry a 5 iron 218-220 yards. When less experienced golfers watch golf they rarely take into account all the factors. Carry distance, wind, elevation change. Taken together they can radically alter club choice.

Guys who have that kind of control over the ball can do a lot of things when they want to. I bet he could also feather a 5 iron about 160 if that's what conditions called for.

We also don't know if the tees were actually at the "232 yard" mark. Could have been up that day, so may have been more/less than that "232" they show on TV.

Even so, doesn't seem that amazing to me. I'm much older than Adam and not a particularly long hitter, but I've flushed a few 5 irons off the tee that went 200 yards or maybe even a little longer. Doesn't happen often enough, of course. So not too hard to believe a pro could hit one 20-30 yards longer than me.

Adam Scott's stock 5 iron is more like

Avg on tour is 195 and Adam Scott is not 35yds longer then average, not even close. His 5 iron is more like 205-210 max.

Without knowing what he has the loft on that 5 iron, it appearing to be slightly down wind, I believe it's slightly down hill, etc. that doesn't seem all that far fetched with the club head speed he has. He didn't carry it the full 230, as has been said prior, as well. 230 when the ball rolls there isn't all that insane for a Tour level guy who can control flight, shape, etc. to get the ball to end up close to the number he is looking for.

If you're talking about the Trackman stats discussed above, that 195 figure is for 5 iron *carry* only. The OP is talking about one shot at 230-yards total distance, specifically a tee shot Scott hit on a par 3 that hit in front of the green, pitched forward, and rolled up to the hole.

Even if his stock 5-iron carry were "only" 205-210 as you say, it would be easy to imagine that he could get 230 yards total distance out of it with the right conditions (draw shot shape for extra roll, good lie, flat or downhill hole, etc.).

Often times the exact yardarge is exaggerated, especially on par 3's when they just give the yardage it says on the tee marker, then there is elevation, air density, temperature, humidity, firmness of the turf, wind. Most often they are carrying it 10-20 short, and playing for run or not risking going long as that is death, and short sided.

Plus there is that living under par thingy....

I believe GC quad on "normal" settings is set to 0 altitude and no wind. Matt from TXG who has around 117mph driver CHS hits his stock 6i about 195 carry and I believe he has it at 29* loft. So figuring AScott has his 5i loft around 26-27* means at sealevel, around ambient room temp and no wind, he's probably carrying it around 215 given that his driver CHS is a bit higher than 117. Once you then factor in wind, elevation and temperature...not really a big stretch to think he's carrying it 220-225 easy.

Just the other day during the Safeway, Tway hit his 6i out of the rough to a pin 247 yards away. He carried just short of the green and let it roll to the back. These guys are the most elite of the most elite golfers in the entire world. Why we think we should be comparing ourselves, or even other very good amateurs is silly.

Plus, let's not forget the clubs called out on the screen are not always 100% accurate. There's a chance he hit a 4i or even a 6i.

I wouldn't even think of comparing myself to Lebron James or Tom Brady. We shouldn't do it with golf. I think sometimes because we are essentially playing there same game (golf) and hit some good shots at times, we unrealistically think that we can hit it just like the pros.

Adam took a good rip at that. As others have said, he is well above average in swing speed. Him carrying a 5 iron ~215-225 is not that crazy with helping wind.

However, I do sometimes find the distance/club choices ridiculous. It's not uncommon to see one of the longer hitters pull 9 iron from 160-170. They take a smooth swing and it gets there...I'm like, what? I think manufacturers have lowered the lofts over the years.
