How do you respond to this...

I'd reply with the lowest offer I would accept.

Finally.

I suspect a number of you guys aren't business people in "real life" (I'm not either).

You don't generally get so many customers that you can afford to offend people unnecessarily. Then again, if you aren't really business people in the first place I guess it's to be expected.

My guess would be 99% of the advertised prices are starting prices and the advertiser expects to sell for less. So why be so offended/offensive ?

99% of the buyers don't expect to pay the asking price here. This isn't Amazon for goodness' sake.

I am not offended by it as much as I am annoyed. I have already done the research on pricing and put something up for what I believe to be a fair price. Yes, more often than not, I am willing to work with someone on pricing. But, I started it, I put out a price, a potential purchaser already has an idea of what they are wanting to pay for an item. In the past, I have responded with my lowest price only to have the buyer offer even less. They are trying to lower your starting point so they can negotiate it even further, at least in my experience. I have also just told people to make what they think is a fair offer, just to have them disappear all together.

I get it. But who doesn't want to pay the least for the most ? You ? Probably not. Me ? Definitely not. :D

But it takes about 15 seconds to hit "reply" and type "Sorry but xxx is the lowest I can go." and move on. :dntknw:

True, but I already posted a price. I guess in my eyes, if you want to pay less than what I am asking, then make an offer. In most cases, I don't have a set bottom dollar price. I try to keep it competitive and will adjust accordingly based on other sales or offers that come in. I just don't buy into that strategy.

But, I will admit, there are ways to ask that question without coming across the wrong way. If someone were up front, much like Shank referenced above, I wouldn't really be annoyed.

You don't have to be a business person to understand selling something to someone for a reasonable price. not everyone in here is sending offending comments to the person who ask them but I would suspect the question the OP is getting - probably happens once you list the item. that's where it could be offensive and could give smart Word not allowed replies to the low ball buyer.

I've gotten plenty of quick offers once i list an item. a lot where i don't even reply because it's obvious low ball offer which isn't worth my time and i feel the price listed is fair.

That’s fair too. I can see both sides.

I just don't understand this being "offended" part? I attempt to respond to all offers, a simple no thanks or a counteroffer takes 5 seconds. If I can help out a fellow WRXer then I am more than willing.

This.

In my experience you have two buyers on this forum;

a) Active member genuinely asking your lowest price and seeking the best deal possible.

or

b) Non contributing member asking for lowest number, receiving my bottom dollar and then proceeding to nickel and dime me for another 10-20 dollars lower.

I find buyer "b" rather annoying. My response depends on the message received and the activity of said member inquiring.

I’ll throw out an example. Kind of represents both sides.

I’ve been looking for a set of irons for a backup bag. And I’d like to experiment a little with some different shafts.

I really don’t want to spend much. Ideally $200-300. Maybe more for soemthing a little more intriguing.

A set came up that was very intriguing. I figured I could pay $400; maybe stretch to $450. I think they were priced at $575 or $600. I just didn’t feel right making an offer for that much less, so I did ask the question.

The seller was who just wanted an offer, he liked to haggle. That’s fine, but as I said I didn’t want to make an offensive offer. We had a very pleasant conversation, but nothing came of it. If he had said soemthing like $500; then I have a number I can debate about and make a decision. But as it was, no numbers ever got discussed.

This is a scenario as mentioned above. You are a long time member with a ton of posts and great feedback. It is a different question coming from you vs. a non contributing BST user. I understand your position. Gray areas so they say. It's not all cut and dry.

Eh, maybe for some, but not in my case.

I'm in business, heavily involved in multi-million dollar deals, where you do have to be concerned about the small potential client base and high stakes, so you'd be careful in those scenarios, but I don't think that's what we're talking about here.

I've bought and sold a LOT of personal vehicles over the years (probably at least 50, not a bad number for someone who's 54 years old). I'm not offended by that question, just annoyed at their laziness and/or lack of haggling ability. Plus, as others have mentioned, just because you give them a number doesn't mean they'll necessarily stop there. And if you then agree to a lower number, now they may be thinking you're not honest, or maybe weak and they can get you down even further.

The most fun I ever had haggling was at an open-air market in Thailand. You'd have thought the negotiation process was going to turn into a fistfight over $10 worth of trinkets. But once the deal was struck it was like we were best friends.

OP here. I just wanted to clarify, the question that prompted this post was not a BST offer, but an offer on an item I had listed on eBay with a Buy-it-Now price and the Best Offer option. I probably should have specified my question, seeing as how everyone just assumed I was talking about BST (and rightly so). I have fielded my fair share of "what's the lowest you'll take?" here on BST, and while a little frustrating because they are trying to circumvent the negotiation process and just get me to "whip it out" (so to speak) and tell them what my rock bottom is, it's not offensive to me and I'll try to tactfully use it as a jumping off point in a negotiation. Because, the honest answer to the question of "what is the lowest you'll take?" is "the most someone is willing to pay", but I am also not looking to fleece any members here. I will always give members here the benefit of the doubt and never slam the door shut on an inquiry. Well, I might be a little shorter with the guys that have no posts, a recent join date, and no feedback... but we're all homies here as far as I'm concerned about the BST.

What made me post this was the fact that it was an eBay BIN sale with a best offer option. Clearly, it was someone kicking tires and not looking to place a committable offer via the option on my listing. When I sell here, I enjoy a little back-and-forth with a potential buyer. Allows me to "feel them out", so to speak. Now, when my item has made the rapid decent down the first page and disappears on to the older pages and I decide to move an item to eBay, I do it because I am done babysitting an ad. I am not looking to dicker back and forth via private message on eBay.

Basically, I was curious how others handle this situation in all aspects of selling, not just the unique world of the BST. I tried to keepo my answer as brief and impersonal as possible. "You're free to make an offer. I will consider any reasonable offer, but I am not desperate and not looking to give my putter away".

Man I must be a sucker. Everything I've ever bought here I paid the price listed. Guess I don't have the haggling gene. If I don't like the price listed, I move on.

I don't agree with this. If you decide to buy something, it's by definition worth the price to you. If part of that price is not going through the haggling process (because you don't enjoy it, or you don't want to waste your time, etc.), then so be it. That's worth it to you. If you're happy when all is said and done, then it's worth the price.

I don't know that I have ever had anyone do that do me on eBay. But, I don't sell all that much there. I just get the low ball offers. I do like being able to set an auto decline threshold. I have a set of irons listed at $400 shipped with best offer. I checked my pending offers and see a guy offered me $140, $145, $150, and finally $155.

The question doesn't offend me in the least. Let's all be honest, as sellers we're sometimes trying to make a little money and as buyers we can see a guy trying to, too. So that question kind of cuts across the b.s., no? As a seller, I'd rather get that question than a guy give me some preamble about how he doesn't quite have enough for my price but he reaaaaaally wants this but he doesn't get paid 'til next week, etc., etc., so he can only offer $XX.

Wow, a lot of hate for that question. It's a potential buyer, so I can't see how that's a bad thing. You can say a variety of things but generally forcing them to make an actual offer proves they are actually serious about buying your item.

For the record, several people go on BST with an unrealistic price for their item(s), so it's a two way street on the "doing your homework" topic.

The way the question is phrased is irritating because it seems very one-sided and selfish.

Most sellers are willing to negotiate and meet half-way. But don't go to a seller and immediately ask them to name their lowest price. It's kind of rude.

"Would you take [price]?"is a better way to go IMO. If you want a discount then be willing to throw out a price.

I would probably ignore the "what's the lowest you will go?" unless I was desperate and had no other inquiries.

There’s a lot of stuff listed here that’s priced well over the value of the item. I don’t see the issue with someone asking what your bottom dollar is.

Some of you guys I swear, are just looking to add to that “block list” like it’s some kind of honor. To me, you’re just missing out on potential buyers , and looking somewhat childish at the same time.

That statement alone will probably get me on some block list, and I’m perfectly fine with that. It doesn’t phase me. I just chuckle s little every time I see it. So petty.

I delete the conversation

Do you even answer them?

No. My stuff always seems to sell within a day or two so I don't waste my time with people that don't make an offer.

I used to answer with "What's the most you're willing to pay?" but don't even bother anymore.

It just seems somewhat lazy on the buyers part to me. I always check sold eBay listings and previous BST listings and list for the same or lower. I guess if I had trouble selling an item I needed to get rid of I might be inclined to answer, but I haven't come across that situation yet.
