What a great choice for the HOF and a down to earth guy. Some of the shots he hit in his first US Open win still impress me.

Good on Retief! Injuries and putting woes pretty much took him out of being a contender in his 40's but what a heck of a player he was in his pomp. His two US Open wins were on two of the toughest courses I can remember watching the US Open be played on.

HOF - what are the latest qualifications?

A good haircut, a few wins and the ability to do a card trick?

CASE IN POINT - Fred Couples

Like his game and loved watching him play but he should NOT be in the Hall.

He is about 54th on the pga tour win list. And there are 160 in the hall of fame. How does he not fit in? Masters winner. 62 professional wins.

Hes rightfully in the HOF

Only 1 major, that he barely won. Fred got in due to popularity.

Another guy to think about - if handsome Adam Scott retires with his current number of wins and only 1 major, I would say the same thing about him.

He stays out.

For player nominees, I think the HOF should be a minimum of:

2-majors with 15 wins minimum

- or -

1-major and 20 PGA wins

Let's at least stick to relevant wins and leave out the team and misc. junk. Champions Tour wins? Don't know where I come down on those.

IMO, he's rightfully in because he met the criteria to get in. Should the criteria have been different? I think so, but that's where we all get to argue.

Problem with the hall is, it let too many people in too fast to get it off the ground and keep interest up - victim of its own strategy or succeeded because of it, who knows the answer to that.

This recent class to me shows they are having to stretch a bit even more because it's basically full up for awhile.

Couldn’t agree more!!

However if bein a “Playa” counts towards the hall, the Fredster’s the creme de la creme of his generation, lol

The Ladies loved those dimples and smile?

If he hadn’t of givin Maddie his phone number on a ball(which I airmailed from our 1 tee out over #5 FW?), I’d probably have a man crush on him, lol. I matured the following season and would’ve handled it differently??

I’m really happy for Retief, Class Gentleman and he answered the bell ? twice in the toughest test of all!!

Stay well Fergs?

hahaha, that was so embarrassing Blade. No one except for obviously Fred, myself, Richard and his BFF knew what occurred and then Richard stepped onto #1 tee, which is below a large porch on which there were probably 100+ players and club members and he called out Fred’s name, and I was about 20’ away from him on the rail watching a GF finish up on 18 green, which is next to 1 tee and also below the porch, and then Richard bent over, teed the ball up and sent it out over the 5th fairway, hahaha. I know that most had no idea what Richard was doing or why he called out Fred’s name, but he did hit a nice drive, hahaha. Fred came up to me and apologized and Richard laughingly said that maybe a prettty girl would find the ball, haha. That was just Fred being Fred and Richard being Richard :)

The Hall of Fame is truly a crock of......

How can Billy Payne be inducted when someone like HS Colt isn't?

It is an old boys club for the boys to congratulate each other and blow some smoke.

I can agree with that.

Ill admit that i was surprised 160 people were in the hof.

And I waffle on it because you could have a hall that's "really" a hall by some high standards (that not too many are in and nobody visits) or be more inclusive and make it more of a celebration of golf, I guess, and I get that. Hard to draw the lines on wins, etc., but it's very inclusive aspect for a long time kind of stole drama out of the annual announcements by making the eligible or exciting pool that much smaller - most are already there.

I think it's way too early for Billy Payne, but he had a lot to do with AN's real and significant efforts over the years to legitimately participate if not lead on ways to grow the game of golf. But since I think he's deserving, why wait. More waffling.

Richard -

I almost dropped your name in my first post in order to provide my "opinion" with some sort of "foundation" But, I knew you would/could speak for yourself and chime in. Always liked Fred's game but couldn't stand his "lack" of work ethic.

Fred Couples - a player, not a famer.

Hmmmmmm - That would be an excellent title for a new thread.

"PLAYER OR FAMER"

As for me being an old guy. Sorry - just crossed into my 40's.

And from what I heard the 40's are the new 30's.

Lol. I can picture it all so clear ! And although Richard might not agree , if I may defend Fred a touch .... a guy has to take a swing sometimes and find out where he stands

But if in Richards shoes I’d have done the exact same. Or worse. Lol. I’d say he was probably very controlled vs what he wanted to do !
