That's a bad comparison. You should be less concerned about the looks and more about performance. The point was you can't judge a club what the back of the blade looks like.

And you apparently miss my point. I can judge a club anynway I like, and looks is certainly high on my list of how I judge them.

Besides that, there are lots of players cavity backs that all perform equally well. How they Look is tremendously important when all the top irons perform essentially the same anymore.

I would go so far as to say looks, feel, sound and turf interaction are about the only things that really matter anymore with “players irons” from big manufacturers.

Regardless of how the head looks, it appears that they've changed the weighting to make the sweetspot a little wider than that of the longer bladed P770.

I suspect that the tech guys are/were trying to make a cavity backed smaller version of the P790, without the gapping problems in the short irons, instead of actually trying to build a replacement for the 770/750.

That being said, look for a more forgiving head than the 770/750 with more of the distance and precision of the 790's. Who knows, maybe the ugly duckling turns out to really be a swan.

Edit: My P770's are in good enough shape that I can wait out a model cycle until the followup to the P760 comes out. Maybe then they'll get the tech AND the looks right for me.

Quick question

If they look sooo bad, but performs and feels exceptional, would you still buy them??

I can't. Not that I think these look awful, they're just not good looking irons.

It's the same reason I can't buy ping irons - I know they perform great, and have some of the best customer service in the industry, but I can't get over the "raw" look of ping irons.

So for me, and I'd guess at least 90% of the golfing population, if I don't like the way they look in the bag, I'm not buying. My last few iron purchases have been what I consider to be some of the best looking irons produced over the last few years. (z765, JPX 900 Tour, P790).

ugliest irons since the cleveland VAS?

they literally made the worst looking iron they possibly could in this situation. the p790's look great, the 770/750 look bad but I would consider them. these? if their goal was to make a horrendous looking iron then they deserve a trophy.

Quick question

Based on the way Tomo was describing them in the IG live stories, these sound like the perfect set for me: short iron performance similar to the 750, mid-irons perform like the 770, and long irons get the benefit of speed foam and perform a little more like the 790s. All of this in a set that is designed to work together and I don't have to loft blend everything by hand and then worry about turf interaction of the soles. Plus, I'm a sucker for a pre-worn leading edge, so that instantly gets my attention. These seem check off a LOT of boxes, but I'm very concerned about the looks.

I won't play something that's ugly and performant because I can always find something else that looks great and performs well. Aesthetically, the P750/P770 were dead on perfect to my eye and harkened back to my days of playing the venerable 2005 rac Forged TP. I'm sad TM has gone away from that look with the P760, but I get it: if you're going to put in foam, you can't have traditional cavities.

I saw these in person Tuesday. The pic on the first page isn't a finished product. The final version is much better. It actually is one of the few TM irons I would consider playing. I'll see if I can take a pic today.

I really hope this is accurate. I've been trying to work a 750/770 combo set into the bag and the 760 would seem to be a great combo set out of the box. I want to like them...

So there is a ray of hope? The head Day is holding in the pic has a big plastic badge glued to the back of the head.

I few random thoughts come to mind here besides them being less than pleasing to the eye:

1. I thought pre built combo sets were dead.. almost every manufacturer has 3 to 4 different iron models that you can mix and match based on your needs..

2. This will probably be the least sold TM iron model

3. An incremental improvement to the current 700 line with slightly different aesthetics would have been a better move for TM than this

4. Seeing how well the JPX Tours have done in recent years, TM should have made a 740 instead, a more blade like cavity iron that is more forgiving than the 730s but still workable for the pros to give the 750s a run for their money

5. I dont understand this industries design process.. I would think it would be easier to conduct your research on sites like GolfWRX and others to gather target market information and then give people what they want with a slight twist.. rather than create something in a vacuum..

I hope that pic with JD isn't the final version. So fugly looking.... what the.

I think I'll be moving away from speed foam honestly. I think that while yes it probably does help with ballspeed and maybe forgiveness, it takes away all feel. When I hit a 7i with my 790s really well, I actually have no idea where on the face I hit it. I usually find out I hit it a little high on the face when it flies the green though.

I'm not a TM hater by any means. Yea we all know about their marketing tactics, but ultimately, they usually make good stuff. The 730's are great clubs and I liked the 750/770s a lot. Ultimately, I went with MP 18's but I certainly considered the 750/770's.

I say all of that to say that these things look terrible. And yes, looks are important. Appearance certainly isn't the only factor, but it is a big factor. If you don't have confidence in a club, you're going to have issues. It would be tough for me to have confidence in these, especially when I could grab a set of JPX919's or I210's. I just don't understand why someone didn't stop the process somewhere along the way and make the decision that they couldn't release these like that.

You almost got the feeling watching Jason Day that he wanted to say that these sucked, but as an endorser, tried to find ways to complement them.

Quite possibly the ugliest iron I've ever seen. This iron fits the size and category I prefer to play but this look so bad I won't even give it a try.

To be fair, Day's reaction had much more to do with the fact that these aren't something he'd play because the last thing he needs are irons that launch higher. He wasn't reacting to the merits of the irons in general, just how they fit him.
