Good topic, I wonder how much the heavier clothing itself affects our swing?

I actually always golf without sunglasses or hat, I was out like that on our record setting hottest day of the year (100+ degrees), everyone else had on wraparound glasses, hats, rangefinders, etc. I feel like I golf better with nothing on my head, no watch, and nothing in my pockets. Can't prove it. Might be completely wrong. Just my emotion on that. But... Surely extra layers of clothing doesn't do our swing any benefit. Where I live you only get a couple months of really hot weather so it's a necessity, I wonder if anyone has ever done a comparison of scores where people are dressed lightly vs. heavily?

Never something that I have considered. I will switch out my wedges and put an old set in rather then wearing out my gamers but that's about the only change that I make for the winter.

Switching over shafts seems like too much hassle with the irons in particular. Plus if I am practicing over the winter, I want to practice with the clubs I will be using in the summer (the wedges I will switch in for the winter have the same loft, bounce, shafts, grips, etc, etc).

I cant wear sunglasses, I cant wear anything on my wrists, and I take my wedding ring off to play. The hat will come off to at times.

I definitely tho rather play in 100 degree heat than 55 60 degree cool air.

Definitely not. A few layers are not going to slow you down unless maybe you're playing in sub-freezing temps with full coat on or something. If anything you would only be slower due to not staying warm and loose. Personally, the only change I will make in the winter is to a softer compression and "cheaper" ball.

I think there has to be at least minimal effect when you start talking about multiple layers. I don't think it's nearly as important as the effect of cold, dense air on the flight of a golf ball, or the effect of cold temperatures on the body (especially if you are OLD, as I am...) but there's no way that it doesn't matter at all.

For me, I think the additional difficulty is throughout cold weather, I'm wearing DIFFERENT layers from one day to another. There is an adjustment to that, at least compared to just putting on a golf shirt and a pair of shorts and heading out the door.

I play a considerable amount of cold weather golf and have invested in UA/Nike base layer garments (tops AND bottoms) that are thin but really work to keep you warm. Also, polypropylene UA socks that will keep my feet warm while not being bulky. I always move to a softer ball but never change the shafts. As mentioned earlier, I usually walk to help stay warm and dress overly warm when I have to ride.

When I lived in the northeast, I couldn't play with pants. Growing up in Florida, I just could never get used to it. I played in high 30s and low 40s weather in shorts, but I always walked so I would stay warm.

I found that layers on the core of your body was better than bulky long sleeve layers. I would wear a long sleeve shirt and a fleece vest and was fine. Walking does wonders for not getting cold. I never noticed a difference in club speed, but sometimes the ball felt like a rock.

You guys that donʻt wear caps/hats, sunglasses, etc. realize the sun is still hitting you in the winter time, right ?

Protect your skin, you get to play golf more years.

I don't wear sunglasses when I play regardless of the temp or weather. It's just a personal al preference.

Hats depending on my mood just seem to annoy me at times so I take them off.

I agree to definitely protect your skin tho. Sunscreen all the time regardless of how much sun is out or regardless of the temp.

I wear a lot of cold weather heat gear durring the cold times. Underarmour (in my opinion) makes some of the best cold weather gear.

For me personally the tighter and more base layers I put in it seems to shorten and slow my swing. So I was considering sticking S400 ttti in my irons, and stiff flex shafts in my woods.

I already play S400 ttti in my wedges. Trying to compensate for the slower swing speed in the cold due to body not getting as warm and loose and ball not flying as far due to the cold. Wasn't sure if others do it, have done it, or has considered it.

Only change I make is playing a cheap ball. Nothing grinds my gears more than hitting a good shot and losing it due to the leaves.

Softer higher launching shaft in my driver...fairways are usually not firm and fast so I want max carry.

Tour B XS to 330RXS...softer compression and my summer yardages remain

Davis Love once said you lose 5 yards with every layer of clothes over normal...maybe not as bad with these new fabrics.

Interesting. Cold balls lose yardage too, and it's illegal to warm them, so that's a factor too for we cold weatherites. 10 yards difference at least between a cold and a warm ball on a drive according to some tests I've read online.

EDIT: Just found this other thread, super interesting, so ball heating didn't become illegal likely until 1984, and Ben Hogan was using a portable wick based warmer, most notable during his 1953 Carnoustie run. That's very significant actually. Toasty balls go considerably further. Anyhow interesting side note: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/502866-was-ben-hogan-cheating/

This topic reminds me of this commercial

I don't change anything when the weather gets cold. To me it's just sort of like playing in wind, rain, etc. It's just another adverse weather condition and I'm not expecting to score as well as I do on a day that's Sunny, 80* and a calm breeze.

I think that you are over thinking this thing. But if you are thinking along those lines, I would challenge you and ask, Maybe the drive shaft that you are using is too stiff?

I am willing to bet that the best players, who might have had to play in cold weather from time to time (Tom Watson at the Memorial one year when he shot 68 in a cold, windy day; Jack Nicklaus in a cold, windy Open Championship) never considered changing the shaft in their drivers. They had clubs that performed in all conditions.

If you think that your driver shaft might be too stiff for cold weather, you might want to consider a softer shaft for all of your play.

By the way, are your shafts too stiff to play 3/4 shots in windy or cold conditions? If you can hit the 3/4 shot with your current clubs, you are probably good to go in cold conditions.

Titleist did my fittings, Xflex in my irons 718 AP2 release, stiff in my wedges SM7 release, and XFlex in my woods TS3 release.

I carry my driver 279 average, 5 iron 197, 7 iron 178, PW 147, 58* wedge 101 yes, all standard lofts. You can add minimum 5 - 7 yards to thos carry yards when I decide to step on it.

I understand what you are saying tho, but I definitely due not lack speed. I would say I am on the above average side for SS.

The question was not asked because I question my swing speed. It was to poll actions, thoughts, and ideas of going to softer shafts for colder temps.

When you take into consideration the effect of cold weather on you body which can decrease body temps and increase stiffness therefore decreasing ability to turn and generate speed. Also adding additional layers of clothes onto a tight under layer of heat gear adding to reduced turn and swing speed.

I understand someone with swings of + 110 is not going to worry about a 2 - 3 mph dip. However in my case generating 107 - 110, losing 2 - 3 mph does raise some questions.

I also do not base what I do on what the pros do because I do not consider myself on their level or have visions of grandeur and believe I could be. So this is not an issue of what pros do or have done.

Thats what i do too, just use warm clotes that dont prevent your movements, and consider playing a LADIES ball when it gets colder, its not the shafts that gets "stiffer" when its cold, its the ball that gets harder, so to compensate for that, use a softer ball when the weather is cold, and carry reserve balls in your pocket to keep them warm and ready for play.

What I do for Winter golf, change to a softer low compression golf ball. Winter greens are often soft and don't need spinning golf balls, in fact needs more release to get the right feel.

Dress in layers will help, Protect your head and upper torso from the low temperature since that's where it'll lose most of the heat. So baseball cap is definitely not for Winter golf.
