Midsize or jumbo lite grips for 33" putter?

pmcuk

Recommended Posts

I'm about to cut down my Seemore FGP from 35" to 33" and I'm looking at a light grip between 50-60g that's at least midsize. Looking at around 2.5mm or 1" wide at the top, maybe up to 1.2". Contenders:

G-Rip Little Buddy

Winn Pro X 1.18" paddle

Winn Dri-Tac Jumbo Lite

Winn Excel Jumbo Lite

Winn Medallist Jumbo Lite

Winn Lite Pistol Jumbo

Black Widow Fusion Jumbo Lite

Or any others? What are some recommendations?

Grip should match balance, i.e. as Scotty Cameron said OS grips work well for "robotic SBST" but not as well for "flowing arc stroke". Toe balanced I would start with standard, face balanced better candidate for OS. OS grips on top balanced is probably just adding challenge but YMMV. Here's Scotty's word on that: https://www.scottycameron.com/articles/scotty-thoughts-picking-the-right-putter-for-your-game/

I re-ordered the Mid Slim 2.0 ones I have already which weigh 43g. Since I know exactly how they perform - I have them on 3 other putters - I'm not worried about the quality which seems perfectly fine to me. They're the right size and weight.

For the last season I changed to a 2-ball with the conventional standard pistol grip. I started missing more putts than I expected and so pulled out the Seemore. I have two FGP, a M3 and a M5. They seem to be getting me back on track. I can't remember why I changed to the 2-ball. Maybe just curiosity and ringing the changes once in a while. I've always liked centre shafted putters with straight shafts.

Sounds face balanced, those are definitely good candidates for the very large grips, i.e. they take your hands out of the stroke. But I'm very much into the pendulum stroke right now which it sounds like you are as well, so the other thing is weight, i.e. those larger grips counter-weigh the club so length becomes more of a factor too.

Just doing extensive experiments now on whether smaller or larger grips are more accurate for pendulum stroke.

The larger grips aren't all heavy - that's the whole point of using a 43g grip. I find 1.2" diameter about right for my hands, so that's a Superstroke Mid Slim 2.0 or equivalent clone. The overall weight at 34" comes out at around 485-510g with this 43g grip, and swing weight is from D0 to E1 depending on the weight of the head. My mFGP with stated head weight of 330g comes out at 486g and D4 at 34" length. My 34" Seemore M3 with a stated 345g head is 507g and E1. So this 43g grip gives the right kind of balance for my taste. I like something around D4 for putters and wedges.

Is a total weight of 485-510g optimum? Some may find it light. The M3 at 345g is pretty typical and if this comes out at E1 with a 43g grip, you could take the grip up to 50 or 60g with modern 350g heads. This should take you up to around 520-530g overall which is a decent weight.

Not sure where that came from. Obviously all grips are different weights. Some grips are designed to be as light as possible to have minimal affect on weight and balance — whereas some golf club grips are manufactured to be heavy enough to counterweigh/balance, and are for sale in a variety of weights. I don't think anyone here was in question about that but if they were should be clear now.

The reason oversized grips are not well suited to flowing arc strokes isn't their weight. It's their size. I think I posted a link where Scotty shares his thoughts there, it's not a weight thing. It's a size thing. Matching the grip to the stroke type. YMMV.

OK - misunderstood that! Thanks. I did read Scotty's link but it didn't make too much sense to me, even though he knows 100 times more about putters than I ever will. The first priorities for me are overall weight, balance and feel of the grip in my hands. I think after that would be how the grip affects the sound at impact. I've never factored in the type of stroke. Maybe I should, but the first 3 priorities would determine the grip anyway.

I've never thought about that. I have a background in audio though. The amount of direct sound from the face to the amount of resonant sound from the body would be the issue because the grip can't mute face sound, only "body", i.e. the whole club resonating as one piece sound. My guess is the effect is not on the sound itself but more of a sound-to-feel thing, i.e. crisp to soft or crisp to crisp, etc. Interesting thought though, I love stuff like that. Some guys these days mount grips without tape, just air, surely that would impact that as well, one wonders how.

Good thoughts. I love these threads. I learn a lot. :)
