Swing video - irons issues - seeking feedback

Coming back from a back issue (L4 L5 S1), irons have been garbage. Can't get a good strike for anything. Serious regression. Was playing solid bogey golf or better, now can't even make clean contact. Plenty shanks.

Driver is fine, putting fine, pitching fine, chipping fine.

Can't hit any full iron shots. I suspect I'm not making a full turn, but gotta be something else too.

This is my 7iron. Previously my 145 club.

Probably a hair too close to it and elbows are separating way too much in the backswing as a result of two movements that fall under the irony category.

Your aren’t extending waist/torso/spine in the backswing and massively restricting your hip turn.

The irony is you are likely doing those two things to protect your back and they are actually putting more pressure on it.

Free up hip turn, feel chest point higher and keep the elbows closer in the backswing.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Thank you. If I had to work on one thing, would you recommend the hips? That resonated with me.

Do you feel as if this is the same swing you’ve always had or are you trying to protect your back and perhaps being a bit tentative at this stage and affecting your swing?

Basically the same, but definitely less flexible. Whole thing feels tight.

I fought a sway in the beginning, corrected it, played some good golf for awhile and was getting better. The back issues contributed, but don't feel I can blame them entirely.

Hope you got some relief from the back overhaul. Things will look up with the irons eventually.

Since you said your driver / pitching is fine, you should video those and compare them to your iron swing. Maybe post them here too.

I see two things :

1) Very little "swinging" of the club, more like "moving it" with your right hand in a non-circular path.

2) Spine angle moving all over the place, which is preventing an "anchored" "circular swing" / "centrifugal force" driven motion.

Update: played today. Made a concerted effort to turn hips in backswing and turn through to finish. Better shoulder turn.

Took awhile, but by the back 9, I was shifting my weight a lot better on the downswing, and some of the pieces came together.

Monte correct in that the freer motion didn't stress the back as much.

I stretched a bit before the round too, which helped a bit.

Thanks all.

I think this describes it. I was kinda taking it back halfway and then trying to accelerate it with some weird twist.

I think it crept in when I changed my pitching and chipping- similar technique, effective inside 60 yards, but not longer.

So I'm really trying to make a fuller hip and shoulder turn, and get all the way through the ball after a weight shift. Working a bit better. Not there yet, but light at the end of the tunnel.

Sounds like (and looks like) it might be related to the "Pelz synchronized wedge" shot, which DOES work great for very short shots.

It actually works well for partial wedge shots as well. Like a "change up" throw.

It is the "opposite" of the "power swing" though (as Pelz explains)
