Cold-weather golf

In the Baltimore area some public courses stay open all year. I have played while it is snowing.

 

There are also micro-climates in the area that are tolerable. I left Frederick one day with 2 inches of snow on the ground and played 20 miles away in Rockville, where it was fine.

Move to Florida. How anyone can enjoy golf but not play 6 months out of the year is nuts to me.

Hurricanes are rarely an issue. Having a pet alligator at your home course is also fun.

Very similar at my course, a few rabbits, the odd fox and some geese, one of the latter stopped a shot of mine that was headed for the green last week, the little b@stard.

My crew will play anytime it's above 40 degrees. Layering up with wind-proof outer layer and Footjoy winter gloves until your hands get too hot.

 

I find turning the shower all the way over to C at the end of my shower helps too. It's good for your immune system as well as getting into the correct mind set. I'll stay in there a minute or two making sure everywhere gets the cold water treatment. Try not to shiver and embrace the cold. After the first 30 seconds or so it's not so cold anymore. I do this all winter and would do it all year, but during the warmer months the water isn't cold enough to count as a cold shower. Read about Wim Hof. The cold is your friend.

Played my first wet/cold round today. Didn’t use the cart cover but defintely broke out the blankets and cart heater. Low 40’s and breezy, it rained all night so it was pretty sloppy and the dampness made it chilly.

Temp usually has to be above 45 for me to head out. Today was my first semi cold round of the year. Overcast and the high was only around 52. I teed off around 1 and I think I saw the temp was about 48. I played quite a bit better than I have been because I was forced to slow down and club up instead of trying to overpower everything. Thinking about using the Q Star Tours I have for softer compression balls. Not sure if they are soft enough, but they are definitely softer than the XV.

Layer up, walk the course, and play a low compression ball. For layers, I recommend a mock turtleneck and fleece as well as long underwear and thick socks. Walking allows you to warm up as the round goes on. I can't play with two gloves on so I just keep my right hand in my pocket when I'm not swinging. However, most people wear FootJoy winter gloves. There are lots of golf ball options. The Duo, DT TruSoft and Supersoft are probably the most popular as well as the Duo U and Chrome Soft if you insist on a urethane ball. Pretty much every golf ball manufacturer makes a low compression ball now.
