Do Nice Kids Not Finish First?

TigerMom

Recommended Posts

I came across this article and thought it was interesting

https://www.newsweek.com/nice-guys-really-do-finish-last-agreeable-people-more-likely-be-broke-1162687

The article talks about finances, but I was wondering whether it also pertained to sports, and even junior golf

When you look at who the most dominant players in every sport are, none of them seem like "nice guys"

They are more like cold-blooded killers when the game or match starts

It doesn't mean they can't be good, decent people, but as it pertains to the competitive arena it seems like they have to leave that behind

Thoughts?

Jack Nicklaus sure seemed nice.

Tiger is exceedingly generous.

Life is not a competition. Golf is. Important to separate the two.

Depends how you define nice. I think it more of not letting someone walk all over you. People who complain all the time usually are usually. broke. People don’t want to be around someone who complains and try to intimidate people.

If you agree to everything your not really being nice. In golf usually that means your looking the other way when you see someone cheating. Those people also never win even though they enable others to win over their own interests.

It also not just in golf but in every sport this happens.

Nice person and a killer in competition or business is not that rare. It looks rare because the asshats stick out more and garner the attention. The ability to recognize and act instinctively to both open a door for the elderly and keep your boot on the neck of your opponent when you have them down is a gift from God. My kids have the first which I can take credit for, they lack the second and there is nothing anyone can do to change it. And to reinforce my point, I have three kids 2 years apart. They understand competition. I live on a small resort island in FL. We have Billionaires here. Most are nice, generous guys and nobody outside of their circle knows their names. We also have a few guys worth a ton who step on everyone they can, throw it around, make sure someone is looking when they donate etc. Everybody knows these guys' name.

I think to be a true champion you have to want it more than anyone else

That is not technically incompatible with being nice, but it is not common

A lot of the ppl at the top have good PR and seem nice on the outside

But if you look more closely they have an edge about them that demonstrates their drive

This type of singular focus is usually the opposite of someone who is looking to please others all the time - which many would describe as being "nice"

I don't think Tiger Woods is considered to be "nice"

I think the most interesting part of Tiger's comeback is his new demeanor. He genuinely seems like someone who hit the bottom and did some self reflection and now has a better appreciation for his family, the fans, and his peers. And as he showed, a softer Tiger can still put the ball in the hole and win. You now see a guy who might have needed that emotional distance before in order to feed his competitive side can change his off course personality and still want to win enough to succeed.

No judgement, as I'm a huge Tiger fan, but TW from 15 years ago would have shot 4 under (instead of +1) in the final round and blown the competition away, not feeling nervous on 18 and only relieved after he hit the green
