So many cool things to do but in no particular order

1. Skytop bar at the Ritz Carlton

2. Night market / street food

3. Victoria peak (go there first thing, like 30-1 hour before it opens to avoid the crazy lines). Once up there the hike around the peak is pretty cool

4. Gondola ride to the Big Buddha (same thing, first thing in the am)

5. Mid leve escalator (we took it up and walked back down, stopping by all the bars and restaurants along the way)

Have a fun. My wife and I were just there last year and it’s one of our top spots we’ve been to.

I went for work and didnt get to do much touristy stuff. Take the ferry over to TST and catch the free laser show on the Hong Kong skyline. Im a sucker for a good skyline, so I grabbed some beers at the 711 and enjoyed the show.

I mostly wandered around Wan Chai and Causeway Bay areas at night and had fun. Just walked a bunch of miles. Theres nothing specifically memorable about that, but it was a cool experience to get the city vibe. Its a very east meets west feel thats different but familiar.

Id love to go back and so some of the things sbjinx mentioned.

Stanley Market for bargains, take a ferry or subway to Kowloon, across the bay, for excellent hotels and shopping; great tailor shops if you want a great suit. The Suzy Wong District (named after the William Holden movie) is slowly disappearing to modernization, would give you a glimpse of Hong Kong the way it used to be. Be careful crossing streets, as traffic runs opposite of what we’re used to.

It’s a shame Jumbo’s floating restaurant is no longer there.

If you wear a suit for work, I would not leave without getting at least one suit made.

I've been here for the past 10 months. Hong Kong has something for everyone. You are coming at a good time as it won't be too hot.

There have already been some good suggestions:

Big Buddha - worth doing, but also walk up to the monastery around the back - we go there for Sunday mindfulness talks, but it's a great location away from the maddening crowds. If you have time, there are other good places to visit on Lantau Island - Tai O is a rustic stilted fishing village (about an hour from the Big Buddha by bus). You can also get a ferry to Mui Wo and get to Tai O that way as well. Lantau also has some great hikes if you are into serious walking - I am a resident, so drop me a message if you need any other help.

For food and dining, there are some good but expensive dim sum places in ICC on the 100th floor. If you want cheaper dim sum, Maxim's City Hall is really good, but you may have to queue up at weekends - it's worth it though and I hate queuing for food!

There are some great options for all sorts of food in the mid levels, and lots of great bars, some obvious, some hidden away like Foxglove, a 1930s jazz bar hidden behind an umbrella shop. Do be careful as drink spiking is known to happen, especially in Wan Chai.

For tailoring - I recommend Empire Tailors in Tsim Tsa Tsui. Not cheap but good quality and they can usually turn around a suit in 3-4 days. They do good shirts as well.

Get ready for tons of people, very crowded and lots of bumping shoulders if you don't walk with the flow. Taxi's a fairly cheap and easier for tourists, or Uber is even better to get around.

Getting a tee time at Hong Kong Golf Club is also a good thing to do, considering this is a golfing website I'm surprised nobody has recommended this. It's not cheap but has great history. Not sure what the typhoon did to it though. Public courses are fine too but a bit strangely laid out for first timers.

Food is really great. Both western and Chinese, but also not cheap. You have to do the main tourist spots as previous posters mentioned and but try to time it so you miss the crowds. i.e. if you go to the peak, don't leave after dinner. Maybe just leave a little earlier after the sun goes down. The tram ride down has a super long line usually. Weekdays usually shorter. For a tourist it's easier to stick to the Hong Kong island. You have Lan Kwai Fong and the west side with some nice views of the Victoria Harbour at night. I would stay away from Tsim Sha Tsui as it's just too crowded with tourists. Central and West Side should keep you happy. Depending on what you like to eat, there's a lot to choose from.

@Bingo1976 - Drink spiking? Damn. Yeah I guess be suspicious to being approached by overly friendly suspicious looking women.

  • 2 weeks later...

Lan Kwai Fong is a bit like Bourbon St, mostly open-air bars and loud music. Fun with a group, probably depressing alone.

Stanley Market/Stanley Beach is fun. Be ready to haggle in the market. Take a hike through Tai Tam Country Park and end up on top of the hill at Tai Tam Reservoir Rd for a nice view.

Kowloon is where you'll find the fanciest hotels with brand names you'll recognize (Four Seasons/Ritz Carlton etc). There's a NOBU in one of them.

There's a cog railway up to the peak where you'll find a shopping mall and great views. Can't recall the name, maybe that's Victoria?

Lan Kwai Fong is pretty sh1t these days compared to what it was. I'd head to SoHo (South Hollywood Road) for a better choice of bars and eateries. Even if you go out alone in Hong Kong, it's a very sociable place and you often end up chatting to people.

The Captain's Bar in the Mandarin Oriental is a great place with beer served in chilled silver tankards. Sevva is good for a roof top drink with views over the Harbour, or there is a bar on the 116th floor of the Ritz Carlton which is a bit pricey, but has great views over the island. I work on the 91st floor of ICC where the Ritz is.

Victoria Peak is a bit of a tourist trap - the lines for the railway can be massive, so just take a taxi. You can walk up higher from the tourist station and there is a nice park at the top with panoramic views out to the outlying islands depending on how the weather and pollution are.

A buddy of mine is at Morgan Stanley there. Same tower right?

I lived and worked in HK back in the 80's when it was still part of the British Commonwealth. I'm sure it's very different today. Back then you knew which day of the week it was by which of the 5 major hotels you ate lunch at.

Take the Jet Ferry to Macau. You haven't seen gambling until you watch the Chinese. Over there "joss" is everything.

Have a cup of coffee or tea in the lobby of the Peninsula Hotel. If those walls could talk...

Maybe have a beer with the guys at the HK Jockey Club.
