i think it looks fabulous ... you don't need a golf course that "looks good" ... you need a course that is interesting ...

but the rough is almost unplayable, so i just don't see how anyone can play golf there ... :read:

There's no way the US could EVER win a a Ryder Cup match there.

I'm fully aware that the greatest Ryder Cup team of all time won there in 1981. In fact it was the first time I had ever heard of the Ryder Cup.

Was there today - course looked immaculate! It was really very windy yet the players have such amazing trajectory control, that you really wouldn't have known just how hard it was blowing all day. Even on the first few holes straight into the wind, they were driving it a mile - great to watch.

I don't think the course looked boring at all - would certainly love to play there, especially seeing as it's only 30 minutes away for me.

p.s £3.50 for a bottle of coke is absolutely ludicrous.

Interesting leadboard heading into the weekend! Managed to catch a reasonable amount of the coverage today in the office. Course looks fantastic and the conditions tough forcing the players to play golf rather than just hit it hard, go find it and hit it hard again, really made me want to get out and play.

Looking forward to the weekend, although my confession is that I can't stand Pepperell and I hope that one of the guys sitting behind him, hopefully Matt Wallace, can do something over the weekend to make up the difference.

Wow!! Sounds like the European Tour are trying to outdo even the R&A at The Open.

I think to be “Royal” it needs to be on royal lands. Like the 3 Ws of Surrey it is on prime heathland but it is not royal estate.

I think that to be a "Royal", the course needs to have been sponsored by a royal who wanted to be a member there.

I find Walton Heath to be a bit of an underwhelming course. I expect Rose & Fleetwood to be battling it out for the win on Sunday.

Using a bit of a composite course this weekend.

I like it and on bucket list, but wouldn't pay what they ask on green fee as I'm at a heathland course already :)

Thats heather not rough ;)

They have actually haven't got major amounts of heather on the bunkers...

This is my course...heather is bushy as on top of bunkers and around them, and behind, toughens up our shorter course.

Getting there.

There is a difference between being granted the Royal title and having a Royal as a member. A Club may have a Royal member and most have had a royal member or patron but that doesn't automatically allow it the right to call itself a Royal club so to speak. For a club to become Royal, they require to apply for the right.

Anyone know if Andy Sullivan is OK? Thought he did very well to shoot 73, initially it looked like he was done.

Yes, and a member of the royal family was ohe of the first members of WH, but still it has no royal name. There was an article about it in the okd WH website but they removed it...

WH has a funny membership structure, getting in to be a full member is pretty difficult (nigh on impossible in fact) but they have an Artisan section who pay peanuts (figuratively) for their membership but they are required to do on course maintenance like filling divots, repairing pitch marks etc a certain number of times a month. They then get to play the opposite course to the members on that particular day. Clubhouse wise, they can’t use the main grand building but have their own semi permanent structure (shed). Definitely a case of them and us!
