Swing Speed Radar Anomaly??

I have a SS Radar that I use occassionaly. I realize that it is not an overly accurate device, but it can show whether one's swing speed pattern is speeding up or slowing down.

 

When I make swings with no ball and try to make the clubhead move as fast as I can, I can get it to read in mid to upper 80's. This is indoors. When out on the range, hitting balls, I can get consistent mid 90's and the occassional upper 90's to 100. Realize it tends to read fast compared to TM. My TM driver swings back in mid May were low 90's with best of 97.

 

One would think that without ball, one would be able to generate equal to if not higher #s than with ball.

 

Any insight into this? Anyone else with same experience?

I have one of these. It always registers higher speeds at the range versus indoor w/o ball.

I sent my 4th one to the grave on Tuesday and my 5th one just arrived. This is specifically mentioned on the latest packaging:

 

'SWINGING IN THE AIR - The Radar is designed to measure clubhead speed as the clubface is striking the ball. Without a ball, the golfer will usually release the clubhead after passing where the ball would have been... It is not unusual for swings in the air to be 5 to 30 mph slower than normal due to the late release... Swing at a ball or ball replica such as a... Birdie Ball... which will provide the release speed in the proper location.'

 

FYI, it also advises against using the metal stand opened all the way back to the bump stops, as this cases the radar to be looking to 'upwards'.

IE my 30* 7i is in the low to mid 80s and I can carry that same club on the course 170yds. And on my driver I am pretty sure it reads high, as I can swing my driver and gets speeds around 105, but I can't carry it anymore than 230yds.

So you mean you get the same reading for 7iron with or w/o ball?

 

I am surprised by that. Not in my experience. I always get higher speed with ball.

 

Also, are you making sure the device is set about 45 deg angle? (Not facing ball, but facing backwards)

I certainly don't get the same reading with my driver on no-ball swings. Without a ball it's about 5 mph down, even though I don't feel like I'm swinging slower. As soon as I swing at a ball it goes straight back up. Now I actually understand why...

Everybody is different. Guess you just need to keep two sets of speeds. Or change the release you do without the ball.

It measures the speed of the toe.

 

It’s likely you’re wide open on the practice swing (very common) and flipping toe over at impact when you’re hitting the ball.

Monte, could this in any way explain why my SSR swing speeds have gone up since I switched to an X stiff shaft yesterday? Would torque / toe closure rate play any part? That, or just feeling like I can swing harder due to the extra control?

 

I haven’t measured ball speed yet, but I hit some (for me) long balls on the range, and my swing speed is up from a previously highest-measured 103mph to 105-108mph on the SSR, with nothing other than a shaft flex change.

 

Regardless, I don’t seem to be able to leak it right, so I’m not complaining...

Will be getting a new driver (Srixon Z785) with HZRDUS Red (65g) Stiff to maybe replace my current 917 D2 with Diamana Red (50g) Stiff. Hope to get on Trackman with both and compare ball speeds, spin and launch angle as these are the most important numbers. My son says he has picked up 15 to 20 yards with the new Z785 over his 915 D3. I will settle for half of that.

You carry a 7 iron 170 yards but can't carry your driver more than 230 yards?? Something doesn't add up. Your either not carrying a 7 iron 170.... or perhaps your driver is completely ill fitted for your swing. I would think a player who carries a 7 iron 170 should at the minimum... carry driver 250.

Could be swinging like an iron. Until recently I was in the same boat. Driver speed of 100mph but could only hit drives 230-235, sometimes only 210. Then started swinging like a driver and average 240 with occasional 260-265.

 

As far as swing speed, I have a voice caddie which I think is very accurate. I know voice caddie measures the ball and not club head speed, but just food for thought.

Ok, so let’s suppose his Driver is ill fitted. But what about me? I have measured up to 110 mph on the range with my driver. ~240 carry with range balls. Had a 105mph swing with my 4W from the deck today. My SS with a 7I is roughly 77mph and I hit it 150yds. What‘s wrong with me?

I just can't hit a driver. Doesn't matter which one, or how long it plays. I get around 100mph with a 5w on my radar, and I hit that 210-230 depending on the strike. One of the guys I play with only drives it 200-210. On a short par 4 today I layed up off the tee with a 5i and was even with him. So yes, I hit my irons really well, and my driver like dog poo. You have no idea the heckling I get from people because they think I should be hitting my driver instead of my 3 or 5w.
