How can a good looking swing be so bad?

Recommended Posts

I posted my swing to this forum once, when I was a +4 no less, and got ripped apart. The nicest comment of all was “are you sure you didn’t mean you’re a 4?”. Dan and Monte gave me good advice though.

You need to learn that once you post to the instruction forum, the masses will think good players have horrible swings that need overhauls and mid-high handicappers have good swings that need tweaks. I have no idea why that’s the pattern but it’s what I’ve observed. I can also honestly say that you shouldn’t trust 95% of the advice you read on here. It’s usually well intentioned, but bad. It’s why Monte and Dan comment and their advice is usually way different than anything else said.

In summary, pick someone you trust, like Monte or Dan, and email them your swing directly, along with money. They know how to help good players. Your problems aren’t big at all. You need tweaks and direction.

This might as well be the Dan and Monte forum, because those are the only guys anyone wants to hear from.

What I said is true -- it's not a good looking swing. It might be effective; it might not. Lot's of good players have non-classic swings. Lots of really bad players have non-classic swings, too. But, the OP's notion that his swing ought to work because it looks so good is just plain wrong. Monte's suggestion is a good -- get with someone who knows what he's talking about.

Could it possibly be that they, along with a couple of others that post here, have thousands of hours on the lesson tee actually teaching students and don't post anonymously ?

Great advice.

I will add though that the OP comment of “how can a swing look so good and be so bad”? It’s because you need to know what to look for. It’s a good looking swing but there are some flaws that can be addressed.

I was using Monte and Dan as examples. There are quite a few guys who are great on this forum and frankly are generous with their time.

The rest are just like the guys who walk up to you on the driving range and give you unsolicited advice, and it’s almost always terrible. Is it any surprise that these same guys also come onto a website to offer advice?

...and the OP does have a nice swing. The reason you think it’s bad is because he started by bragging that it looks good. That impacted your judgment before you even saw his swing. Does it have flaws? Absolutely. Does he swing the club better than most golfers? Without a doubt.

I never quite understood the idea of throwing up your move on a forum publicly ..... unless of course you want both solicited and unsolicited advise. And keyboard critiquing. Because that’s what you get here... by design. This isn’t an instructors forum never has been.

Some folks just want unequivocal praise and sugar coating.

"Great looking swing, just make a few minor changes and you could be on tour"

that’s a really good idea thank you very much, does anyone know the price for an online Monte lesson or if he does them? I haven’t looked into not sure how to. Thanks guys

Yeah, I don't like your P2 position. Would fix that first.

What's your lowest score in competition this year? What is your scoring average?

low 74, average closer in between 77-78 because of a few rounds I threw up after the lay off edit: also thought I should add we were short on tournaments this year because we lost our coach, also added to the reason for the lay-off

My swing looks like a 20 handicap, but I’m a +2.4. I know the swing and what it needs to do/look like. I just can’t get my swing to look like it should; however, it’s mine and I know to use it. I’d never post it here.

What are your expectations? You are currently averaging 77 - 78. Where would you LIKE to be? And what kind of courses are you playing? What's the rating and slope of most of them? Are they all over the map?

One thing I see young kids struggle with is that don't realize that (sometimes) the courses they played when they were in high school were MUCH easier than the courses they start to play in college and they expect to shoot around the same scores.

Well if your home course in high school is 6425, rated 71.1 and sloped 122, and you shot a 69 there one time, and then you get to college and play courses at 6800 to 7200 with higher ratings and slopes, then of course your scores are going to be higher on average -- even if you are improving! :-)

So I don't know the specifics of your situation, but I think it would be very helpful for you to define your goals. Do you keep stats when you play? If not, you should. :-)

Much more to discuss, but need a bit more info....

my home course in high school was 6600 rating 71 slope 125, our home course in college we don’t play a tee box we play the very back of the hitting area but the back tee rating is 7100, 74.5 and slope of 138. At home in a qualifier for high school I shot 65 but that wasn’t a tournament. At qualifiers at college the lowest I’ve shot is 70. Which isn’t bad but I’d like to be going lower my putting is coming around was used to playing on bent grass and then the switch to Bermuda was a struggle but I’m finally figuring it out. I feel like I was a better ball striker in high school before I started taking lessons on bad days I usually could pull out a number and find at least a little bit of a golf swing now it’s just all out of sorts and can’t seem to keep it together. I’d like to see my average closer to 73-75 but my ball striking right now is hindering that. Now that we’re in the off season I can take some real time to make the changes that need to be made in our indoor facility.

I remember that. I also remember Monte posting videos of Frank Lickliter hitting balls and asking us on here to guess his level. There were people guessing he was a 15 index! :swoon:

I don't get to play much golf these days so my handicap has mushroomed in a big way, but I still laugh at a comment I read on here not too long ago: The worst thing to happen to golfers is an 8 handicap with a video camera and internet access. LOL.

Full disclosure: this is a very cringy thread, my posts probably included (I wouldn’t post something like this anymore; I’ve learned my lesson). There are, however, some great contributions from some posters in this thread. My swing doesn’t get “ripped to shreds” like I remember, but there’s some fun cheap shots thrown!

Enjoy!

Toast - what were wrong with your responses? I was laughing my a** of reading that thread. Just a couple of guys talking nonsense and you chirped back at them. I thought it was all in good fun.

The “I reached my right pinky to the far right” comment was funny.

It totally was meant in good fun on my part. Sometimes I tend to come in a little hot with the jokes though, in case you have never noticed...

I posted my swing to this forum once, when I was a +4 no less, and got ripped apart. <snip>

Beautiful move.

Thanks. I wish I could still swing like that. I tore both my rotator cuffs up a month after this video (labrum and biceps tendon in both!). If people don’t like this swing, they might puke watching my current one. Actually it’s not bad considering injuries only allowed me to play 4 times this year... or was it + 4 times? (that’s a reference to the other thread which will make zero sense unless you read it).

Listen to your doctors, friends. Unless they’re idiots, then ignore them.
