It seems their presence on the east coast is much larger than their presence on the west coast. Any LA residents out there that find it a good bargain?

Just adding my $.02...I have been a CC member for over three years now and it’s been great! I live in Metro Atlanta, where we really get to take advantage of it (28 courses I believe). If you live in or travel to Atlanta, Dallas, or Houston a lot then it pays for itself. I NEVER travel without checking to see what benefits I can get in the city to where I’m going.

For example, my family is from the Triad area of NC. One of my closest cousins was asking how the hell I was able to get us on one of the courses there where he paid only $75 (he was happy to pay that rate) and I paid only $25.

60 members left a cca course in north Texas 2 weeks ago. Several folks have told me another CCA club in dfw is about to see the same thing at their club.

The product is garbage and I hope they change it.

You have already said this in this thread. You really must have been unhappy. What club did you move to?

There is a fairly nice one not too far from me in The Woodlands area. I checked it out this summer not knowing it was a private club. I was looking for an alternative semi private course for practice and to play. Didn’t know it was private till I got there. As it didn’t look too fancy I thought maybe I could afford it. Then I found out through the website it was a club corp club and then the red flags came up. But I really didn’t care for the layout either. Not a lot of variety in Houston area. I guess what I’m saying is if I liked the home course I might check into the program deeper.

Currently a Member at The Woodlands Country Club and the first thing ClubCorp does when it buys a club is cut the maintenance budget in half while raising the dues, cart fees, guest fees, food & beverage. The biggest issue is its a semi-private club so don't expect to be treated as a member like most clubs.

Also expect lots of outside tournaments on the days set out for scheduled maintenance. They don't do maintenance on days of outside tournaments but do them while members are playing. When I raised the issue of outside play I was told if we could book outside tournaments everyday we would. Everything is done on the cheap so don't expect anything first class.

The ONE program is nice because you can play some clubs that have deals with ClubCorp but aren't owned by ClubCorp and are much better clubs.

If i could get my initiation fee back I would join a different club. Beware of ClubCorp.

You paid an initiation fee to join a semi-private (aka public) golf course?

ClubCorp may not be everyone's cup of tea, and you certainly have valid concerns about outside play/tournaments, but your comments about slashing maintenance budgets are simply not true.

In almost all cases, the clubs that ClubCorp has acquired in the last 5 years were financially strapped, and were running shoestring maintenance budgets and deferring other maintenance & investments due to their financial condition. When ClubCorp acquires clubs, they typically invest significant $ in not only clubhouse & facility renovations, but also purchase equipment and up the course maintenance budgets. Prior to ClubCorp's acquisition, The Woodlands courses and many of ClubCorp's Atlanta-area courses were owned by Sequoia Golf, which almost never bought new equipment and had very low maintenance budgets. Most superintendents have been thrilled when ClubCorp took over the courses because they were actually given tools (equipment) and a reasonable budget to deliver a good golf course.

Maybe the dissatisfaction with CC courses by some can be attributed to where they are (their region of the US). I don’t know of too many people that are unhappy with CC in the metro Atlanta area primarily because we have so many options (high-end, private as expected, semi-private, and some in-between all of that). The more options you have the better experience my guess.

That's like AGC in my area.

Which course are you saying is semi-private? I was not aware of any Club Corps courses that are semi.

I am a CCT member and played at Braemar, Old Ranch, Aliso Viejo and Coto de Caza. Yet to play at Porter Valley. My favorite is Old Ranch considering overall value.

Thanks....I will be there in Dec and was trying to decide which course to play.

A few come to mind off the top of my head. Currituck Club and Nags Head golf links on the outer banks are both open to the public.

Ford's Colony in Williamsburg, VA is open to the public as well.

The nice thing about ClubCorp public courses is that, in my experience, you can typically make earlier weekend tee times through the Clubline than you would be able to at a ClubCorp private club.

If you land in OC, Coto is the place to go. RTJ track. it will test your skill and patience.

I wish I never joined ClubCorp and to get out it will take me 2 years on a wait list while I continue to pay almost $1000/month in dues.

We get an annual dues increase and chicken s*** email from the GM who doesn't have the cojones to even put the amount of the increase in the email. It was 5% across the board this year.

No more credit card option to pay your dues so there goes the free airline ticket or points.

Memberships are way oversold with tee sheets that look like a public course. Outside tournament play is constant during the good weather months.

Food is on par with the local convenient store.

ClubCorp has two objectives and neither are to your benefit. 1) Sell as many memberships as possible (and say whatever necessary to make that happen) 2) Squeeze as much money as possible out of the existing members.

dfwgolf123,

ClubCorp is a for-profit business enterprise. Of course they are going to try to maximize revenue and profits; whatever the market will bear. ClubCorp's risk is that members can vote with their feet and leave. So it's a balance, which is why they have also done so many reinventions to renovate and/or add amenities to attract & retain members (without assessments).

ClubCorp's member advantages are typically convenience (member lives close by), nationwide network access if you travel, low entry costs, and no risk of assessments. The alternatives are member-owned private clubs or private clubs owned by other entities (individuals or corporations). Both of those options might offer a more restrictive environment (i.e. - fewer outside tournaments), but often have higher entry costs, risk of assessments, might not be as convenient, and don't have a nationwide network.

Why will it take you two years to get out of your membership?

Not so easy to leave. Initiation is $10-15k non-refundable and about $25-35k refundable depending on what type of deal you got. The current wait list is around 2 years on a refundable membership as they do a 4:1. For every 4 new memberships they sell, 1 of the refundable ones gets to come off the list. You have to keep paying dues while you are on the wait list.

Makes one think long and hard before putting up an initiation fee to join a club today. Long gone are the days of waiting lists that support refundable initiations. Worse when a club goes bust or gets sold. A neighbor lost a $50K initiation when a club went bankrupt. I play in a league that books times on multiple local courses (both pubic and private) two or three times per week.. No initiation, discounted greens fees, ability to play with the same bunch of regular friends. No assessments, mandatory dining charges, etc. I used to enjoy belonging to a club, but those days are gone.
